i remember seeing the first swift back in 1992 when i was taking hang gliding lessons and always dreamed of having one. i remember at the time how much progress was being made on the glide ratio of hang gliders, and the swift totally blew everything away at the time with a 50:1 glide ratio, where the top gliders were something like 14:1 iirc. by now the SWIFT is ancient, has there been anything like it that now blows it away and has made the original swift seem like a quaint old toy?
This glider is the only new "threat" to the Swift and it has similar performance: www.ruppert-composite.ch/en/ In the last few world championship events the Swift still finished first over the Archaeopteryx. There are some prototype gliders being built but non that I know of have flown and demonstrated performance exceeding the Swift.
Soaring requires either vertically moving air or wind gradients. In these videos there is either thermal lift caused by uneven heating of the earth and then rising bubbles of air, or ridge lift which is wind deflected upward by an obstruction.
They sure look like fun. Only I would spend a lot of time on the training hill and take it step by step and get familiar with all the do's and do not's first. But all the same they are an impressive feat of engineering.
my dads been getting me to train in light aircraft but this looks much more like my kind of flying! no ATC much more freedom. Ive been wimping out because i always think flying these kinds of craft is high risk but with a built in parachute im very interested in these and i weigh 150lbs so im guessing i could go quite far!
I like the aircraft but i have concerns about the pilot position, suppose a a heavy landing impacting your spinal column with the injures it may cause.
+elio jarma Agree, the wing is really nice but it needs a standard pilot pod and a small motor or tow setup to rely on wheels as foot landing and takeoff only works when everything is just right and I didn't catch what the weight was but it's more than a hang glider I'm sure and that can be hard on the back as too many people have found out the hard way without mentioning any names.
@@nagualdesign I'm YTEngineer's dad. He bought the Swift, took off, and we haven't seen or heard from him since. Please anyone let me know if you hear where my boy is. I wish he'd never seen this advertisement
+MrMilanoLau That's a lot to ask from a 23 year old experimental design. But just look what you get! OMG, that looks like it would be great by today's standards.

this was the ultimate progression of the original concept by Taras Kiceniuk and his Icarus V, his Icarus II hangs in Smithsonian

Wow Steve, you are a prolific engineer. :)
They're "vortilons", google for the full story. The gist is they allow it to fly slower without stalling.

6:12 OVER 9,000!
as far as we know there has been no crack ups .. skeatesy
without tail, what prevents this plain from going in to forward/backward spin ?
You are saying it can't tumble because it has too much wing sweep?
I'm making it my goal to have one of these within 5 years
It's been 9 years since you posted this comment. Did you achieve your goal?

И зачем нам эти братья Райт, когда человечество может так прекрасно летать.
Good people, give me the simplest, ultralight drawings on Swift!
Люди добрые, дайте кто чертежей на Swift простейший, сверх легкий!
Can it do acrobat?
