During my electrical engineering degree I studied in detail induction motors, I can mathematically demonstrate the current flows, the magnetic fields and the induced current. This is the best simple demonstration of the principles I have seen. A fantastic video, which I am going to share with colleagues.

Aw, thank you so much, that's very kind of you to say. Glad it was of use. 👍

He has an electrical engineering degree: it wasn't of use as he has already studied the theory of AC electrical machines in his degree..

As we shall see, the rotor in a 3-phase induction motor runs in the same direction as the rotating magnetic field. Therefore, the direction of rotation of a 3-phase induction motor can be reversed by interchanging any two of the three motor supply lines.

      Nailed it!

I think you could have usefully have referred to the electromagnetic force that is generated by a winding pulling it in a given direction and then 120° later the next winding does the same and so on, the sequence then determines direction of rotation.

Yur, that's part of the story, but the filed has to move to generate current and a magnetic field in the squirrel cage.

    Very good explanation.

But can you determine before connecting which way the motor will rotate, critical in some circumstances?

    • @deang5622
      @deang5622 ปีที่แล้ว

      Of course, yes.
Each phase is named, and the timing relative to the other is known .

Sounds like there will be a follow on from this, could you also do one on why a capacitor is needed for a single phase motor?
(PS) I know why, but I think it would be a good training tool

what would happen if you swap three of the phases? like from UVW to VWU

Wow very technical I just got told if the motor is running the wrong way just swap two phases at the mem isolator "son" end of lesson 🤯 defo nothing like you described it 👍 👏

Shouldn't electricians know this shit? You seem to cover a lot of shit where electricians say oh, i didn't know that.

Sadly many electricians really aren't that knowledgeable and they need these kinds of vids.
Now you can draw your own conclusions about the quality of electrician's training and the calibre of students entering those training courses.

I thought electricians know more about homes and don’t deal with motors plc etc

    Nicely explained Joe ,
But I can’t help thinking this is meanles . As if you want to/need to charge the direction of rotation the way use your exspiereance and skills you learned at college and just swap the pins over , theses fancy bits of kit are taking the skill out of the job . Sorry just my opinion.
Great video though as always 👍if you can’t swap the the connections over without a fancy plug . The it time to jack in .for god’s sake use the skills and knowledge you learned at college . Stop making these companies rich .

Really should have known from your electrical training, rather than experience.
Surely you covered 3 phase supply and 3 phase motors in that training?
