Your series of videos quickly encapsulates what it took me 70 years to learn piece meal. Educational institutions were too busy teaching socialism to be of any real use. Keep up the good work.
Your channel is friggin' awesome! Other people besides the tech minded can learn from this. Your audio is normalized and level throughout the entire video. Your usage of graphics and selection of screen text is spot on. The cutout models you use are modified very clean and nice. Your delivery of information covers the fine details of what is truly relevant and omits that level of TMI that can make a persons eyes glaze over and their mind to temporarily shut down. The length of the vids are just right. The choice of topics may not always sound exciting, but there are many things I learn from each video. I'd love to see this channel in a years time with a shitload of videos and buttload of interactive subscribers. Keep surprising me with the topics - you quickly became one of my favorite tech channels!
Another great video! I'm a mechanic servicing the fishing fleet in my home town in Alaska and just got home from a job repacking the stuffing box on a 52" seiner. 5 1/2" shaft with 3/4" packing. I saw the video and had to watch. This channel has been frequently serendipitous with my activities like that. Thanks Machine Tech Video Blog! I also loved the Case Hardening video.
Yeah, I wondered about that. They do an excellent job. I think having the facilities of a Technical College shows in the quality of the videos. They seem to do a good job at this school. Perhaps Google's "algorithm" takes that into account, that this channel is associated with an institution, and Google may choose to give precedence to a person working out of their shop. Consider this: Which is more entertaining? Watching Adam do a very professional, and very good job explaining things as a Teacher, at a Technical College, or watching a guy like +AvE break stuff?
Hi Adam! My name is Fernando. I'm from Brazil. I'm a Mechanical Technician and I like your videos because they are very nice explained. Congratulations!
Nice presentation on compression packing for rotating equipment, with actual equipment in the field, that makes presentation more effective and knowledge enhancing. Thanks for sharing information.
Thank you so much for putting the effort in to make this video. Super well done, high quality and informative. You really seem to know your stuff and are an excellent speaker. Thanks again!
Thanks for such an imformitive video. I work for a company that makes spiral wound gaskets and distributes compression packing. Now I have at least an inkling on its use and application.
Awesome video! Fixed Fire pumps for sprinkler systems are not allowed to have mechanical seals on split case pumps. Compression packing is the only acceptable seal.
The videos are highly informative. From basic history to its modern application. Please make videos on air compressor air valves maintenance, PD and RD pumps maintenance such as mechanical seal renewal, sleeve renewal etc.
Just replaced the packing to one of our electric fire pumps, lots of great information from this video!! Would love to see your video on mechanical seals!
Most amaaaaaazing channel and amazing explainations.. feel sorry that it is so limited and small... We really need you to learn engineering.. plz upload regularly and kindly respond to the requests.. thanx God bless
Adam, you really make the topic interesting excellent work, but one request kindly uploads more, as a frequency of 4-5 topic weekly. Need your guidance in the field.
Hi, Nik, Thanks for the support. We're using Adobe Premiere Pro for our video editing, Adobe Illustrator for our graphics and the animations are done in Solidworks.
He uses the book "Pumps and Pumping" by Skeet Arasmith in his Industrial Pumps class. Hope that helps. Im not 100% certain, but you may also be able to find some help in the Machinery's Handbook
My friends old trawler boat has this compression packing on his about 50mm drive shaft between the in board motor and the propeller... i spun out when i saw it and found out about this seal for the first time, his has a grease nipple for lubrication thought.
Again great video with excellent visual aids, should be noted new packing shouldn't be tighten significantly initially and once the pump is in operation that packing adjustments have to be made in small increments over a period of time. If the pump is operating at any speed (hundreds of RPM) it is very easy to over tighten the packing. The stuffing box will over heat and in extreme cases if driven by an electric motor the pump can cause the motor to draw excessive amperage.
Great video. I always wondered how submerged shafts were kept from leaking all over the place. So, will you now be doing a video about the other kind of leak stopper used on pump shafts? I hope so.
I know it's an old video, but I hope I can still ask a question. What would be a general rule on the amount of compression upon new installation? 30%? 50%? Thanks in advance and good job on this great video
The rudder shaft can simply be extended above the water line and require no sealing at all. A better example is the propeller shaft, which must be installed near horizontally and it is impractical to extend it above the water line.
Probably the best engineering channel to date...

where the sets?
Interesting. Would be cool if you could provide some reading materials for speeds, pressures and dimensions.
He uses the book "Pumps and Pumping" by Skeet Arasmith in his Industrial Pumps class. Hope that helps. Im not 100% certain, but you may also be able to find some help in the Machinery's Handbook
This is cool. I now understand a bit better what happens when stern glands on boats are packed

Very true. I hope to demonstrate packing replacement procedures in a later video. (Who knows when I'll have time...)
Great Video Adam you rock man! Please make more Take care buddy
I admire this mans ability to say shaft without cracking a smile.
Hi i hope you can make videos explain about compressor seal such as labyrinth seal. Should be awesome!
Very informative... Things they dont tell in books. Thank you!
Great video. I always wondered how submerged shafts were kept from leaking all over the place. So, will you now be doing a video about the other kind of leak stopper used on pump shafts? I hope so.
I like your videos. They are very informative
Keep up the good work
Interesting video. Thank you so much. Good job.
Your videos are great, please keep them coming!
I absolutely can’t tell. Did you actually cut a fourth of a pump housing off or are you just a god at video editing?
That’s a lantern ring between the packing. Mechanical seals can be retro fitted to that type of pump with very little modification.
Awesome channel, how do you not have more subscribers?
Video was very helpful.
Wow this is a amazing video!
Can you add the point of adjusting the packing gland in small increments to prevent "smoking the packing"?
Your Quality is really good for your channel size
I know it's an old video, but I hope I can still ask a question. What would be a general rule on the amount of compression upon new installation? 30%? 50%? Thanks in advance and good job on this great video
Interesting video, thankyou
please do a video on couple stress on squeez film charecteristics of lubrication
Excellent video
Outstanding video

These are great videos. If their is opportunity to talk more about mechanical seals as well as bearing isolators that would be awesome :)
can you make a video about lathe machines and stuff
The rudder shaft can simply be extended above the water line and require no sealing at all. A better example is the propeller shaft, which must be installed near horizontally and it is impractical to extend it above the water line.
Thanks for making interested video
Great videos. Love your channel.
Please make video on mechanical seal
CAN YOU MAKE MORE VIDEOS PLEASE!
