In the US it's referred to as "power raking" or "dethatching". It works a treat, but unfortunately with the big maple tree in my front lawn, I'm stuck having to rake it by hand because of the surface level roots that could damage any power equipment. And brother you're not wrong, it's absolutely backbreaking work.
Great explanation. Loved the mustache lmao!
good video clear and concise
Thank you so much for explaining this in such a succinct, clarifying way. Pwrfect for a novice like me!!
No problem thanks for your comments
beautifully explained 👏👏👏
Thank you
clear anc concise, thanks
Nice one
My lawn is 40 years old and I have Dew worms in my lawn that cause bumps of soil the size of golf balls. Should I scarify to level lawn? I understand that sacrificing will not get rid of the Dew worms, but I feel i should scarify and over seed the lawn.
The quick and simple answer is yes. Use the scarifier to break the surface soil and then reseed afterwards. Be sure to this when the grass is actively growing to ensure good and quick recovery.
What is the difference between Scarifier and detatcher ?
Translation. Both the same thing but different words used. Similar to rubbish and garbage.
why scarify over dethatching? Won't both achieve close to the same results? I thought scarifying was only for when you need to cut into the actual dirt, such as when overseeding. Seems like using a dethatcher would be more productive.
I agree from my understanding dethatching machine is used to get rid of thatch and to scarification is to cut into the soil
Thatch is the build up of organic material on the lawn surface. Depending on how old the lawn is and how much thatch has been built up, that thatch could be sub surface. A thatchy lawn will rise over the years. Dethatching, a commonly used American word and scarification, a more commonly used English word are the same thing. Removal of unwanted organic matter at the soil surface. It is dependant on what you are trying to achieve with your scarify/dethatching and how thick the thatch is, as to how deep you set your blades. These blades are adjustable for that very reason.
curious how this relates to straight up tilling
Did you top dress and overseed after?
Hi Adam, some lawns have a thick enough sward that it isn't always necessary to do so. On this domestic lawn we just aerated and scarified. If the lawn was thinning or we wanted to change the dominant grass species we would have over seeded. We may also top dress lawns in spring but rarely in autumn unless we are trying to achieve a different objective, for eg soil exchange, better soil structure, hollows filling etc.
@@LawnsOne thanks for the reply. Just wasnt sure as it had some damage for the heat last summer. Im scarifying my lawn this week(weather permitting) and not sure to seed or not
@@adamkelly3924 how did the damage present itself? Has the grass died entirely or did it just suffer?
@@LawnsOne annoyingly in some areas with no shade its died completely. Other half is ok, was a period of 3 weeks without being watered in August when we moved out temporarily to care for someone. Ill get working on it this week
Just one thing do I need to mow the lawn before scarifying? I have 2 attachments on my electric scarifier 1. Raker 2. Aerator which looks similar to what you had on your machine , the Raker is tines, do I used both and which one first? Sorry for all the questions I'm new to this
Yes to cutting prior to renovation. It will reduce the amount of material you get out of the lawn and will make the scarifying more effective. Best to scarify first then aerate.
Thx
Very good 👍
Nice to see “what about ya” on here 👍🏿
@@mikekilby9785 You too !
If I’m going to dethatch and then scarify, is it best to give the lawn a good deep watering a few days in advance so the lawn/soil is damp when I do it or is it best for it to be dryer? I’ve heard some people say you don’t want the lawn/soil to be damp when you dethatch but you do want it to be damp when you scarify. Your opinion on that? Thanks in advance
They are the same thing. You are removing thatch (de-thatching) when you used a Scarifier.
Dry for scarifying then plenty of water post work to help recovery.
Hi, thanks for the great vid, Would you recommend Aerating the lawn before doing this. I was looking at doing aerating and the scarifying in the next couple of weeks.
I would ask what size your lawn is as that will determine if it can be watered afterwards. If it can't wait until autumn to scarify. Scarification is an invasive operation and the lawn will need to recover for about 4 weeks afterwards and it will need the water to do this properly. Scarifying now will do more harm than good now, without water.
Scarify ... Dethatch What is difference?
Apologies for the delay responding. There is no real difference. To scarify is to remove thatch.
You need a sun joe
Great explanation, Thank you. : )))
How dry should the lawn be?
Scarifying can be done when dry or wet. Often easier when dry/lighter. But always water well post scarify to help repair
I think he had some thatch in his beard
Me or the dog
God I hope the neighbours were warned about the noise. A rake is healthy and quiet
Don't use the Lords name in vain like that
