    When the angels two-parter from this series first aired, lots of people thought that the doctor's missing jacket in the scene where he tells Amy to remember, was a continuity error. Needless to say, it all made perfect sense after this beautiful finale!

      Yes, that's Moffat for ya. He had everything already figured when he took over. Temporal paradoxes are one of those things in sci-fi that are very, very tricky to do properly, which is probably why "Who" did not delve deeply into it before now. It could be a reason why some fans did not take a liking to Moffat's tenure as showrunner, but when seeing the whole picture it can really blow one's mind.

      @@anthonycaracausa9895 *"but when seeing the whole picture it can really blow one's mind."*
      That was the same thing with Moffat's Sherlock. The same way Season 5 here was essentially one great big single story, Sherlock as well - from The Abominable Bride to the finale - was (even more so) one big single story. And even today, many of the fans don't like them because they haven't made the connection fully that it is one big, self-mirroring story (about Existentialism essentially).
      To me, one of Moffat's greatest feats on Sherlock (or any of his shows for that matter) was taking the already intricately woven 'double story' of 'The Abominable Bride' and pulling a 'Sixth Sense' on it, transforming it into an entire different story you didn't even realize was there until after you watched the finale 'The Final Problem'. (Again I'm trying to be as vague as possible here so as not to spoil anything for those who've not watched the series - which, btw, WHY haven't you watched it?!?!?!? Go! Waste not a second! Watch it NOW! 😀 ).
      Moffat is truly an amazing - and underrated - writer.

    It's remarkable that the youngest actor to play the role can say, "a daft old man who stole a magic box and ran away," and it's totally believable. The museum video, and the moment when he rewinds into the Weeping Angels episode, are two of the best things in all 14 new series of Doctor Who.

    I'm not entirely sure why but "I can buy a fez" remains one of my favourite Dr Who quotes. It seems to epitomise the Doctor's ability to pick himself up and start again after experiencing any kind of loss. If ever I lose - or break - anything now I just think "...I can buy a new fez".

    I really think had anyone else but Matt Smith followed David Tennant as the Doctor, the show wouldn't've been anywhere near as successful as Doctor Who was in this era. Ten was, and is, so beloved, and it was such huge shoes to fill, and Matt hit it out of the park! The chemistry between Matt, Karen and Arthur is so good! Alex Kingston as River is perfection! My favourite episode in the entire history of the show is Vincent and the Doctor. This two-part finale cemented Eleven as My Doctor! Series 5 is a true gem! I LOVE this finale. It’s so clever, is one of the rare times they make really good use of time travel, him hopping back and forth to set everything up is brilliant, and them actually sneaking the future Doctor into an earlier episode is SO well done (his coat sleeves having been a clue all along, not an error as everyone assumed) and the TARDIS being ALL the things from the old wedding saying is genius.
    River is such a tease and one of the best characters in Doctor Who. Her making the Dalek beg is just superb.

    The Boy Who Waited marries the Girl Who Waited! What more can you ask! And the Doctor proposed(?) to River? LOL! This was such a good episode. And great ways to sneak in a lot of the Doctor's previous adventure without being a "clip" show. And I wonder if we ever will learn about River's origins. At this point, the Doctor was getting so popular, that their budget was getting large enough to shoot even more episodes outside of the UK! (Keep in mind that the show started with styrofoam and cardboard sets that would sometimes fall over or malfunction during the live shoots, or actors who were "dead" would be seen getting up as they were leaving frame!) The show has come a long way since, for sure! I am so glad you have been "assimilated" (a Star Trek TNG reference) and am hoping your growing affection for sci fi continues to grow! For me, there are very few things more exciting than seeing a story inspire someone in some way!!

  • @hallieraymond
    @hallieraymond 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

    Okay, so this really was an extremely well crafted series arc, imo. I enjoyed it, and Series 5 is my favorite of the Smith series.
    About Rory the Auton and what it does to his character, though: Rory the Auton was alive for almost 2000 years protecting the Pandorica. That means by the end of this episode, he was older than the Doctor self-reported at this time in the series. He had many Doctor-esque adventures over time, and some of them have even been made into canonical audio adventures and so on. But he was also a foil for the Doctor the whole time because the Doctor's whole thing is he never stops running, never stops moving. Rory stayed. All that time. He never gave up on Amy, and he never lost his respect for life. His first act when he thinks the Doctor has died is to honor the body.
    Then Big Bang Two. Rory gets brought back human through the Doctor's intervention. BUT because the memory Auton Rory was at the epicenter of the cracks in the universe through Amy and retained his soul, human Rory that Amy marries actually retains all his Auton memories. Human Rory is early twenties physically with almost two thousand years of memories and experience after Amy brings his own memories back. Like River Song, suddenly here is another character very similar to the Doctor's level of competence (Rory can't see possibilities in time/fixed points like a Time Lord or regenerate), but the difference to me is that Rory earned it in the story. He became that on his own through the exercise of his loyalty and determination. And unlike Rose or Donna, Rory doesn't have to sacrifice (all of) his awesomeness to retain his sanity or stay alive. He has to sacrifice the hand gun and near invulnerability. Any other skills he learned and knowledge he accumulated are his to keep. I think it's incredibly interesting and good for the Doctor to have a character as competent as Rory on the team-and one who is neither a love interest nor a sycophant. Rory knows the score with the Doctor. And he's his friend anyway.
    The flirting from Amy after Big Bang Two I find in bad taste, but I do think she is joking at this point and certainly, Rory is no longer threatened in the least by the Doctor. I think the Ponds' whole dynamic with the Doctor is lovely for the rest of their run. Rory ran after the Doctor just like Amy did when he left the wedding. Just like Amy, he wanted the Doctor to stay with them. When the Doctor got the call for adventure, Rory and Amy communicated without words to one another that they were changing their whole honeymoon plan, and Amy was the only one who even bothered to say goodbye. Rory was already flipping levers to help the Doctor fly the TARDIS to their next destination. (Side observation: after flying the Earth back home, the Doctor has continued to teach his companions to help fly the TARDIS, and Rory knows despite all the time he spent dead in this series. The Doctor taught him very quickly!)
    I really do love the Ponds. Especially, especially Rory.

    Funny story about the fez. When Steven wrote this episode he went to his executive producer and presented his idea of putting Matt in a fez, and the EP said "Steven If you put Matt in a fez he'll never take it off!!" Steven said don't worry, I have a plan for that, and that's why River shoots it almost immediately. It was just so Matt Smith wouldn't wear the fez in every scene for the rest of his time as the Doctor.

    Want to say, oh Jules, that you are such a lovely person with such a lovely personality and so much empathy and understanding for characters, you are easily one of the relative few movie\show reactors that I actually like and regularly watch. Keep being you and I'll keep watching!😁
    One sad thing about being caught up on your DW reactions... Now I have to wait a week between each.🙁
    One final note\bit of advice, regarding time travel(taken from a book series I think you would like called The Thursday Next Adventures written by Jasper Fforde): Don't be so linear, darling.😁

    I do love this series quite a lot. It has a really satisfying ending, even if it is a bit crazy (that's when Doctor Who is at its best honestly). I love how it ties up the weird reappearance of the Doctor in the Angels episode as well. Thank you as always for these reactions.

    Yeah, it's bonkers - and has more bootstrap paradoxes than a hat full of weeping angels, but it's still glorious - one of my favourite season closeouts. Great stuff

    I love Amy and Rory, but i won't deny I had to grit my teeth a bit when even after everything rory did, Doctor shows up and amy is like "You may definitely kiss the bride."
    Right in front of him, in front of everyone! Dude waited 2000 years for her!!

    • @nightshade7240
      @nightshade7240 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I mean the Doctor said it, Rory said, Amy said it, they are her boys. Also I don't think she meant it that way. More a weird way to say "holy shit I just brought you back from nothing and I'm so glad to see you!" Also notice the fact that they didn't actually kiss. I also don't think Rory is particularly phased by it because he got the girl and he got what he had wanted.

    • @ChristopherCraven
      @ChristopherCraven 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @nightshade7240 okay, come on, this is stretching.
      Her face when she struts up to him for the kiss, the fact that the doctor has to say no, also, no one out there on their wedding day is going to be like "She's mine now, she can kiss whoever she wants."
      People don't kiss people because they are really happy to see them, cheek kiss, forehead kiss sure.
      But that is not what she was going for, you and I both know that.
      I still love Amy, don't get me wrong, but she was a tad cruel to Rory the whole season, and even after realising what a great guy she got and how much she cares about him, she was still ready to throw herself at the doctor.

    Moffat stated at some point that for this finale he decided to narratively write himself into the most impossible corner, just to see if he could actually write himself out of it. Safe to say, he managed it. And that beside story Eleven gives to young Amelia is great in isolation but genius once you realise he wove the "Old, New, Borrowed, Blue" into it. One of Moffat's high points in clever writing, for sure.

    Hey Jules... "Gotcha!"
    This is my favorite series of NuWho. It's nearly perfect. Okay the silurian episode is a little "eh" and The Lodger episode is kind of "meh" but damnit Matt Smith is so electrifying on screen, and this TARDIS team just have such wonderful chemistry. Also, Steven Moffat just did a fabulous job of crafting this wonderful fairytale. That moment when we find out that the "more serious" doctor that came back to comfort Amy was actually from the future... I remember at the time the Angels episodes were airing that people were speculating online that it was a separate Doctor, because you can just make out his jacket. That is immensely hard work to craft all of those threads os that they carry through and pay off.
    As much as David Tennant's exit from the series broke our hearts, I think he left at the right time. His iteration of The Doctor, as I said some months back, was just so weighed down with grief and pain from all of the losses he incurred over his three years... Matt Smith just explodes into the role in the Eleventh Hour, and he never stops.
    This was truly a blast to relive with you, Jules. Thank you for that. It's been 14 years, now.

    I do love how this episode went out of its way to have as much fun as possible during an otherwise dire situation. Amy in the Pandorica and the "ridiculous miracle" Doctor with a mop and fez are standouts there. On that note, it was jokingly suggested in behind the scenes talk that blowing up the fez was as much to stop Matt Smith wearing it as it was the Doctor

    so you have some great theories about River, and as she said, it's about to be revealed. as the Doctor said," are you married? did you think I was asking?" "yes" Welllllllllll.......... also I love your discription of the Doctor as you started your outro, it plays right into the secret of the past three Doctors I've been hinting to you about, so here are my last hints, but you may have it figured out without knowing you do.... the ninth Doctor was avoiding his responcibilties, the Tenth Doctor started out barganing with the universe and transitioned to being angry with it, this Doctor is calm and accepting, so what does this sound like? love your reaction, can't wait to see you views on next season, and yes, Fez are cool.

    Top Moffat. It's wibbly wobbly timey wimey. He somehow managed to solve all the problems set up in The Pandorica Opens. Sure, the Doctor basically getting himself out of the Pandorica is a bootstrap paradox, but it is all such fun and so clever that you can just enjoy the ride!
