I wonder how anything could be so gorgeous. I want to more of Rachmaninov. This music that slides into the very fabric of the beautific, wandering, soaring, bringing us home to the inner folds of The One. Here in the United States I have not known this side of his music.
LOVE those orthodox Russian choral compositions of Rachmaninov...those vices thrill me so much...and I have sung harmony for many years in choirs and barbershop styles...
Some people are not fans of Rachmaninoff because his most well-known works (e.g., his third piano concerto) are "too assertive." I dare them to listen to this; they will long for more of this magnificent composer.
i think most people don’t appreciate rach because it goes over their heads. once you fall in love with his music it consumes you, and effects how you play any other piece. in my opinion
I think S.R. was one of the last composers of the romantic era, marked by pre-war modernist sensibilities, narrative progression in long scores, and a deep choral impulse that was rooted in the Orthodox theological tradition--none of these elements are acceptable today in radical deconstructive art communities.
AndreasJohanns Deconstructive indeed. The problem lies in the modernistic approach of (so-called) innovation over sensibility. Unless you are considered “innovative” in the worst, darkest and most perverse sense of the word you are labelled as retrograde and not accepted, especially in so-called “artistic/creative circles” in the west.
to bizintin: The church is where all Russian composers started. Singing in the choir, or just going to church. At concervatories in Russia, sacred music was a required study. When we think of Russia we think of Atheist/communist Russia. Before the revolution, Orthodox Christianity was life to most people.
This is a kontakion of the Feast of Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God. I don't know what Your religious background is, but You can easily google what the kontakion is. Translation can be found below the video. If You meant something else, please tell me.
I was wondering is it possible (meaning, correct) to perform these parts separately? Do you think that these parts are independent that much? What does kontakion mean in musical sense? Does it affect the concert form of this piece? Thanks in advance for your opinion.
No, I meant up until minute 5th...two bars at the end, then there is different key/another part? Do you think it is possible to perform it partially like that?
@korlock3000 In all available lists of Rachmaninov's works this piece goes without an opus number along with some other choirs. such as 'Pantelei the Healer'
да... сопрано умницы... там где тесситура высоченная до си бемоль второй октавы смогли взять да ещё и полноценным звуком на форте.. круто... никакой халтуры...
Neither the tomb, nor death could hold the Theotokos, Who is constant in prayer and our firm hope in her intercessions. For being the Mother of Life, She was translated to life by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb.
Fun fact: Rachmaninoff created this piece when he was 19 years old as one of his home assignments while studying at a conservatory
I loved the subtle, but notable presence of the G1 on the final chord. Very rich without making it feel like its overpowering.

Really interesting to see choir sheet music and then listen to it sung (I don't read music nor speak Russian). However, I'm in love!

you mean musical parts? voices? SATB?
No, I meant up until minute 5th...two bars at the end, then there is different key/another part? Do you think it is possible to perform it partially like that?
Супер!!!!!!!! Аж до мурашков!!!!
@korlock3000
It's neither part of the liturgy nor of anything else, just a standalone choir concerto

great orthodox
4:20 that bass note is soo powerful, apparently Russia is a state of mind :)
Can someone point me in the direction of a translation for this??
Neither the tomb, nor death could hold the Theotokos,
Who is constant in prayer and our firm hope in her intercessions.
For being the Mother of Life,
She was translated to life by the One who dwelt in her virginal womb.
Is it a setting of the kontakion for the Dormition?
Да, это кондак Успению Богородицы
@VitaliyGR Do you know the opus number?
Is this from the liturgy? or is it part of something else.
It is the Kontakion for the Dormition - which is a type of hymn. This one is for the Dormition of the Theotokos (the Virgin Mary)
where can we find the score ?
Try on IMSLP(.org, not .com)
As The king of cadences, as i reckon Rachmaninov, cadence at the end of the piece is so not him
Support to Russia at this difficult time against Western aggression. God Bless Russia forever.
I hear prague being invaded by the germans, and the russians saying - nah, ya don't!
President Putin should listen to this alone, in the dark, and reflect upon what he has done
What he has "done" is more than enough to be canonized as a Russian Saint after his death. He did well deserve that!
Супер!!!!!!!! Аж до мурашков!!!!
