In '21 I had to return two Gibson Sothern Jumbos for major cosmetic and playability issues. I was amazed at some of the flaws. How they made it through QC is beyond me. I have a Les Paul but now I'm a PRS guy. No QC issues whatsoever.
I thought the headstock thing was a funny observation, but the scuffs on the sides, that would bother me. I don't think the case should be that tight. I love the sg in brown though
As always, appreciate your real world, boots-on-the-ground look at this kinda stuff. I've recently been considering adding a used SG Standard to the stable, and I would expect to find a used example looking something like this: some cosmetic finish flaws, some bumps and scuffs, but in otherwise excellent condition for significantly less than MSRP. And that's great. Brand new from the factory for $2k? Not in my house either. Back she goes! It's a reminder that the US has higher-paid labor, not necessarily better labor. There is a distinction, and the two are not mutually exclusive.
Were you planning on not playing it and just look at it with a bottle of lotion in your lap? Dude..did it is going to get dings and scratches. That is nothing.
the neck was glued on at the wrong angle on the 61 standard sg i bought weeks ago..i returned it..bought a les paul...they are trying to sell it still at gc..the paul is fantastic..the sg was unable to be set up..is gc going down again too.
I returned a Fender Professional 2 Precision Bass for far worse flaws. Every screw was wonky in the pickguard. One screw was so bad it broke the wood wall into the electronics cavity. The truss rod hole was offside. The pickguard was lifting and warped. An 61 SG I looked recently had a truss rod cover that was clearly wonky. These things would annoy me for life.
I got a SG Modern 2021 in November 2021, I opened the case and all four clear knobs were shattered and the guitar wasn't well placed into the case. I emailed Gibson about it explaining in great detail the state of the guitar when I opened the case and sent them pictures at every angle. I got a response asking "what exactly is wrong?" and "send the serial number of the broken piece", emphasis on piece not the serial number of the guitar. 1. Identified the problem and sent them pictures. 2. How in the world would I know a serial number of clear knobs that aren't sold separately anywhere. The pickup noise was driving me insane until I moved the ground wire into a proper position. The Action was also way too low and Neck needed to be readjusted, so much for their setup job. Honestly it's ridiculous. The guitar was literally a few days out of the factory and in that condition. $2400 wasn't worth it and I will never buy anything from Gibson again.
Not disagreeing with you. You raised some definitely bad finish issues. But personally I love how tight my SG fits in that case. It hasn't caused any finish marks on my guitar. And I know it's not moving around in there when transporting it.
yeah, your right that some people might find that nit picking but i absolutely agree, for 2k i wouldnt accept it either and Gibson should know better!!! I have 1k charvels and Ibbys that have better craftsmanship at half the cost. Dont blame you a bit for sending it back!!
I can overlook some cosmetic issues on the body, headstock, knobs, etc but any QC issues with the neck, frets or fretboard are completely unacceptable.
If the back of the headstock has a natural finish, it's a good way to tell if the open-book profile is spot on. You can see the wings they glue on through a clearcoat because their grain is different, and both should be the same width. I was able to negotiate a free $550 Blackstar HT5R-MKII combo and a 10 pack of D'addario strings out of Sweetwater because whoever sanded the headstock on my Std 50s LP goldtop went a bit heavy on one side. I'm talking a very minimal amount. Like, not even 2/64's... and the ground wire from the pickup selector was loose, so I just soldered it back tight. It was already a replacement for the same model that had major finish flaking issues. So it was either go through another swap or negotiate. I negotiated because this LP is under 9 lbs, has no finish issues, has a really dark fretboard, and plays like butter. Unfortunately, there's always gonna be flaws with Gibson production guitars. Of course there's exceptions but they're uncommon. I feel like I made the right move. If it was my only guitar, then I'd nitpick until I got a perfect one, or maybe even look at the Custom Shop, but I already have a sick stable of really good guitars so I can accept this small, nearly undetectable flaw... especially with the bargain I got for it.
Quite hilarious after watching this video earlier I stopped by GC which is not usual for me. They had one of these so I played it for a while and ended up buying it. That’s about the only way I’ll buy a Gibson these days. Hope you were able to get a great one. Mine was flawless and was just put on the wall a few days ago so no paw prints yet.
that is why i only buy from smaller shops of which i know they inspect the guitar. the scuffmarks on the side could have very well come from shipping, my sg isn't completely tight in its case with the lid closed, around the sides its tight, front to back not so much. so it might be able to slide a bit causing scuff marks. Nitro finishes are very prone to scuffs scratches and dings. whiping it down after playing will most likely create some swirls and tiny scratches.out of all colors black is the one that shows them most clearly. I must admit on the horn and near the neck is just bad sanding from factory. the tooling marks on the binding are on just about every gibson as it stands proud of the fretboard before getting filed down to make the fretnibs. as you said that could easily be fixed with some sandpaper and about 15 minutes of work. im glad all of my gibsons came in just about perfect. and the scratches and dings on mine got there from playing
I feel you bro, that headstock thing would ruin the vibe everytime I would play it. I got the way cheaper Epiphone SG standard inspired by Gibson for £400 and had some minor scratches on the pickguard. So for 2000$ for a Gibson you expect perfection and quality. No brainer you returned it.
Go buy used / pre-owned. It stops all the nitpicking. I never buy new, I look for a demo, b stock, open-box or used in near mint. You save good money and the few defects won’t matter. This is a tool not an art piece. If you play it, it’s gonna wear. If you’re buying it to look at, that’s crazy town. I care more about tone and feel.
If it was just the headstock I would take it as the guitars has its own personality and how I could pick mine out of all the rest. The scuffs on the sides from the case would definitely have me send it back as well. Used… fine .. but brand new.. no.
I bought a Fender Telecaster too that I had to send back because of stuff that should have been caught in QC. Like the tone knob didn't work.... It seems QC is an afterthought with some manufactures. When you pay this much money it should be better.
This is pure speculation on my part; however, I do believe I am partially if not completely right. Each guitar made has to pass a quality inspection. In many instances, they do not pass. Often times for the same reasons you have pointed out here. The guitars are then sold to dealers at discounted rates. The dealers are not extending the discounts on to the consumer.
The quality control failure on this guitar is not acceptable. Thanks for making this video and making others aware of what can happen. It’s actually pathetic that they tried to con you with that quality failure , but thanks for passing on your experience and making others aware . 👍🏻🌌🕊
It's probably the lighting, but in the video the headstock looks "cloudy." Those scuff marks on the finish are pretty bad, that should've been sold as b-stock imo.
You have every right to feel this way. So many people say, well if you buy a Gibson you can expect for there to be defects, this simply should not be!! It’s sad that Gibson can put out a sub par product and people overlook this. Would anyone overlook this for a vehicle or an Appliance…..heck no!!
I called Gibson about paint peeling on a Studio I got 8 months ago. I felt like I was talking to a pot head . "Just play it". He says we don't warranty paint. Very disappointed it is peeling for what it cost.
I just had to sell one myself it was a choice of getting Rid of my 2021 Epiphone Custom Koa Les Paul or my 2019 Gibson Standard Les paul..it was a easy choice I said good bye to the Gibson..
i did not know anyone still bought gibsons? i ordered a new double neck and it was like the binding on both necks was sunken lower than the finish, plus all sorts of finish issues. waited a year for it and tried to get over the defects.....sold it! $300 what ever branded guitars are better fit and finish. once you've had a few gibsons it's like you get over the brand name and you actually demand your money's worth.
How does it play?.... if you are an actual player these small imperfections are not a big deal, in fact, you will eventually add character spots and blemishes to the instrument with normal playing. Is it an art piece or an instrument meant to be played? Just remind yourself why you selected the guitar in the first place and you will likely keep it. BTW It looks amazing!
It is a pity because aside from all these issues the guitar looks very nice especially the fretboard and the body grain. I agree though, personally I can live with a ding or two but in this case it is too much. Also asymmetrical stuff once you see them you can't unsee, it may sound bs but they can ruin a guitar for me too.
This is really the only answer. The only real way to get a flawless one is to pick it out at the store. Unfortunately sometimes the store does not have what you are after.
I have been a gigging and studio guitarist for over 50 years. During that time I have owned many Gibson, Fender, Gretsch, Rickenbacker and other guitars. Today’s Fenders, Gibsons and Gretsches are just not being made to the same standards they were 50 or more years ago. For one third the price one can purchase a PRS SE model guitar that will be as good, if not better, better quality than any Gibson made today for under $4,000. For $4,000 one can purchase a PRS Core model the is superb in every way.
I think Gibson will eventually put there selves out of business. I am on my 3rd Tony Iommi and have not checked it out yet. But my Les Paul special is not perfect. And I have been through 2 SG Juniors and the second is not perfect. I hope Gibson is watching this Video. Epiphone has better quality.
They screwed up with the grain filler that’s why ya got those sinking spots. They sprayed the finish on and it sunk into the grain. No bueno that should have been a B stock guitar and discounted.
The case will settle to the shape of the guitar with time. The finish issues are unacceptable. How did that slip thru quality control? I wouldn't accept that if it was a Chinese clone and never seen an Epiphone that bad.
I’m like you I would be pissed. I was considering buying a 64 SG standard but after seeing this I may pass. I have owned snd play still regularly a 77 Les Paul custom I bought new. It’s always been my main guitar. But the weight as I get older wears me down lately. But I don’t even know if I can adjust to another tone after all these years. I am a Gibson guy but QC doesn’t seem to be a priory with the brand. I was a lifelong Ford guy but won’t buy another Ford with there QC issues. So thanks guy or pointing out these issues.
Gibson's prices these days require absolute perfection. Until everyone starts demanding that, they'll just keep raising the prices for "luck of the draw" instruments. It took me going through a dozen of the LP Special P90 TV Yellow models before I got one that still only met two out of five criteria that I wanted. I bought two of the Epiphone versions that did better. That's ridiculous!
The guitar is going to either be played or it’s wall candy or worse. I’d ask for some money off and definitely keep it. Most of those lacquer blems can probably be made practically invisible. Do you play much or is it for show? If you get one thats ‘perfect’ it will eventually get marked somehow. My $4,000 Gibson LP had a really tiny defect and the store chopped a substantial amount off. Yeah, it WAS perfect, but I’ll ding it one day anyway. Play the freakin’ thing man. It’s beautiful the way it is.
I love my Gibsons. But honestly I will not buy another one. 1. LP Studio had wood filler in between the neck and the neck binding (I got a replacement and it’s great) 2. J-45 Came to me with the electronics hanging by a wire and loose & banging around inside the guitar 3. LP Special has a fucking ridge in between the neck & the fretboard (who let this one leave?) 4. There will not be a 4… 5. Fender Ultra/Pro II & 2 MIM’s are all flawless 6. PRS CE 24 extra flawless.
This is what the guitar community has turned into. People knit picking every insignificant detail about a hand made instrument. If you want a machine built instrument stick cheap guitars made in Southeast Asia.
You are absolutely correct sir. Anyone that has ever watched the videos on how these guitars are made (by hand) would wonder how they come out looking as perfect as they are. Each one is a piece of art.
I bought the same 61 standard tobacco burst from guitar center for a about 18 and a half...had to be ordered because that color is not offered in 2024 now...I'm happy with mine....to each his own ...the beauty of capittalism
The reason people pay Gibson two or three times more for their guitars than they pay to other good brands is the quality. Really, this is it, the quality. If quality of craftsmanship is worse than it's in $400 guitars, that is unacceptable. When you buy a new Gibson you pay 30% for the guitar and 70% for the logo and workmanship on the best level. I wouldn't keep that Gibson either.
I agree when you pay $2K for the guitar the owner has the right to complain about anything that makes them not 100% happy with the guitar! I am in the process of of buying another Les paul. My R7 is awesome but i want a burst and have been considering a 50's standard but to be honest i am seeing too many others pointing out issues with gibson guitars. The 50's standards are almost $3K and from what i am hearing it will be next to impossible to get a flawless one? My alternatives are real limited. I have considered seeing if a can get one hand picked if i pay extra.
The Epiphone SG Modern in trans black fade I had was excellent QC wise for $549.The 24 fret ebony board and asymetrical neck on them are the best part. The maple cap gives it some great chime. The tonal options are unlimited with the split coil and phase push pulls. Can't get more features for the price in any other Gibson/Epiphone guitar I know of?
Doesn’t matter if you pay $2k; if you want perfection, spend twice as much and get a custom shop or get a custom handmade guitar. It’s still a mass produced item and you will never find a perfect guitar outta Gibson USA. Either accept your buying a mass produced guitar from a conglomeration and $2k does not change that.
I played one of these at guitar center. The neck left something to be desired, just no life in it. Maybe I am spoiled by LP's. The SG standard has a better, more lively neck and they seem just in general better quality. I believe the year matters, I think the more recent 2022 - 2023 are better. Still for 2,000 they are overrated. I think I'm going to go back to Tokai. So far haven't been dissapointed.
I’d send it back too. The drunks at Gibson may sober up and take finishing seriously, if more people send them back. The Japanese are laughing their asses off!
I have a gison les paul and an Epiphone les paul..... the Epiphone out does the gibson by a large margin..... attention to detail is what I look for and the Epiphone is near perfect only issue is with the tuners.... not the best... but the rest of the guitar is perfect.... the gibson has finish issues and the neck has sharp frets... truss rod wasn't adjusted properly....and the pots are way to tight....if you just wanting a player guitar...buy and Epiphone
If I were making those guitars I would have never let one leave looking like that. I don't blame you for sending it back. I have a Gibson sg and it doesn't look like that. They're definitely over priced and I'd rather buy a Kiesel any day. I promise I have 3 or 4 hundred dollar guitars with better finishes than that Gibson has.
The open book headstock is correct for a real vintage. Not sure exactly when it became a uniform cut . Back in 50s that's exactly how headstock looked. Vintage collectors look for this to tell if it's not a fake. Personally I'd rather have a modern one for the modern times.. you can look up on utube.. nice guitar..I'd keep it & play it to death .. gonna get broken in anyway..✌️

They screwed up with the grain filler that’s why ya got those sinking spots. They sprayed the finish on and it sunk into the grain. No bueno that should have been a B stock guitar and discounted.
Definitely not nit picking Gibson should be ashamed to let that leave the factory
You're not whining. Your complaints are valid I wouldn't accept that guitar either! Send it back !
Yeah, man that finish should be perfect
Gibson seems to be unaware of the concept of "fit and finish" or they just don't give a shit.
After this long I think it’s safe to say it’s the second one.
You need to try vintage greco sg , its much better than gibson sg
Don't blame you for returning the SG. Unacceptable for a new $2k guitar. I'd send it back too.
I love my Gibsons. But honestly I will not buy another one.
1. LP Studio had wood filler in between the neck and the neck binding (I got a replacement and it’s great)
2. J-45 Came to me with the electronics hanging by a wire and loose & banging around inside the guitar
3. LP Special has a fucking ridge in between the neck & the fretboard (who let this one leave?)
4. There will not be a 4…
5. Fender Ultra/Pro II & 2 MIM’s are all flawless
6. PRS CE 24 extra flawless.
Yeah, but you got authentic Gibson QC issues. Agnesi would be proud.
If it sounds and plays great what's the problem ? Get a PRS custom , perfect finish but without the charisma .
I agree when you pay $2K for the guitar the owner has the right to complain about anything that makes them
not 100% happy with the guitar! I am in the process of of buying another Les paul. My R7 is awesome but i want a burst
and have been considering a 50's standard but to be honest i am seeing too many others pointing out issues
with gibson guitars. The 50's standards are almost $3K and from what i am hearing it will be next to impossible to
get a flawless one? My alternatives are real limited. I have considered seeing if a can get one hand picked
if i pay extra.
Hope you are doing ok 😇😘 😘
Doesn’t matter if you pay $2k; if you want perfection, spend twice as much and get a custom shop or get a custom handmade guitar.
It’s still a mass produced item and you will never find a perfect guitar outta Gibson USA.
Either accept your buying a mass produced guitar from a conglomeration and $2k does not change that.
The headstock is designed that way. I mean the guitar has an asymmetrical bat wing body... really?
I played one of these at guitar center. The neck left something to be desired, just no life in it. Maybe I am spoiled by LP's. The SG standard has a better, more lively neck and they seem just in general better quality. I believe the year matters, I think the more recent 2022 - 2023 are better. Still for 2,000 they are overrated. I think I'm going to go back to Tokai. So far haven't been dissapointed.
Important thing is : Are you creative to make songs with lyrics ?
Guitar could be from gypsy basement .
It took me a lifetime to get a gibson ! I was 50yearsold !they should do a better job of quality control.
I’d send it back too. The drunks at Gibson may sober up and take finishing seriously, if more people send them back. The Japanese are laughing their asses off!
I'd return an Epiphone with those flaws. If my Gibson had shown up like that, I'd be pissed.
In a way those murphy lab thing is a genius move.
Might as well beat the crap out of a brand new guitar and sell them heaps more. ~ r e l i c ~
Thank you for not playing it 😂
Definitely agree.
I have a gison les paul and an Epiphone les paul..... the Epiphone out does the gibson by a large margin..... attention to detail is what I look for and the Epiphone is near perfect only issue is with the tuners.... not the best... but the rest of the guitar is perfect.... the gibson has finish issues and the neck has sharp frets... truss rod wasn't adjusted properly....and the pots are way to tight....if you just wanting a player guitar...buy and Epiphone
yeah - I'd send that back too
Ahhhhh
Complete Beauty
It’s beautiful otherwise, too bad for the blems.
If it’s brand new, then it needs to be in brand new condition.
I bought a Epiphone explorer with the fishman pickups for 800 and laugh all the way to the bank
I totally agree!
I don't blame you. Thats a lot of money.
That's not nitpicking that's shitty QC . I returned a high end bass that was 3k , no shame . Gotta do better than that
The only thing that would be a deal breaker for me is the headstock. What the hell? Looks like a bad Chibson copy.
Why? It looks classic SG Gibson maybe you prefer Cs or some modern SG headstock?
that is the way that Gibson USA does there headstocks
If I were making those guitars I would have never let one leave looking like that. I don't blame you for sending it back. I have a Gibson sg and it doesn't look like that. They're definitely over priced and I'd rather buy a Kiesel any day. I promise I have 3 or 4 hundred dollar guitars with better finishes than that Gibson has.
Sell it as Murphy-Aged on Reverb! lol
2021 epiphone modern figured sg over Gibson standard and all day long
