- Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is the next Sony cinematic slop release. Another overhyped, overrated movie game full of leftist virtue-signaling and propaganda. One of my favorite childhood developers, Insomniac, is now dead.

One of the problems with these games that cause them to become movie games with horrible pacing is that you have "writers", and the "writers" are in constant conflict with the designers who are actually trying to make a game. The "writers" have a story to tell and they have to fit it inbetween the gameplay sections, and the more concessions the design has to make to this story the more disjointed the game becomes.
This is why old games had so much better writing. Games with legitimately good stories like the original Ratchet & Clank, it actually was just written by some guys from the dev team. This meant that they could respect the structure of the gameplay and actually fit the story in where it made sense for the game to have it, and have the story actually enhance the gameplay instead of replace it.
And if you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Games have very different needs from movies and TV, so when you bring in a "writer" with absolutely no games experience they try to tell a traditional story that doesn't fit the game where the focus is on the characters and not on the gameplay experience. Having an external writer on a game who is not in good communication with the design, is like having someone try to direct a movie entirely over the phone, it just becomes a mess.

You've summed up the conflict perfectly. The PS2 Ratchet and Clank games never interrupted the game with the story/writing (even though it was genuinely funny and compelling) because the people writing it were game devs themselves. They knew how to balance the two because they had an intrinsic understanding of how to do so and retain the player's interest. It was from the PS3 games onwards when the story became far more intrusive (and more poorly written funnily enough) that it was clear they were trying to be taken more seriously as storytellers and hired writers with little to no video game experience.

Fun fact : Miles new suit near the end was only created because Adidas wanted to promote their brand so you guys can thanks them for giving us the worst Spiderman costume.

The Mary Jane Peter dynamic was awful. MJ literally throws Peter under the bus to further her journalistic career despite knowing he was asleep and possessed by an alien. She never apologises for it. Symbiote Peter at least had the backbone to stand up to her.

Games stopped being gameplay driven and more focused on politics around 2019-2020. I enjoy playing Ghost of Tsushima, Spider-Man PS4, Ghost Recon Wildlands, Cyberpunk 2077, Witcher 3, Assassin's Creed Ezio trilogy, and MGS5 more than any of the games that dropped after 2020/2021.
Spider-man 2 is only good for web swinging and some combat, and even then the latter isn't that great. Insomniac, and every other modern studio, is gonna have a difficult time convincing me to buy any of their future games - especially if they partner with Sweet Baby Inc.

@SenseiJeager boring side content, underwhelming side quests aside Howard's and Fido missions, combat is basically same as first game with slight differences and both game's combat feels janky and doesn't feel impactful, story is mid af, literally no cops during open world activities in 1st game it was fun helping out cops chasing a speeding car and interacting with them and no dynamic weather changes in open world unless it's story based and that's all the complaints aside from woke non sense
The game has so many plot holes it's obvious SB writers don't really know spiderman. They recently added new game plus but the story is just not worth suffering through a 2nd time after you realize how pathetic they made Peter to be. It's like trying to watch a movie you didnt like that much a 2nd time only to find yourself criticizing it even more and end up hating it.

During the game you can skip cutscenes, and if it's not a cutscene you can run around and just go about your business. But there's an obligatory gay wedding scene you MUST participate in. Yeah, I couldn't believe what I saw when she broke free from a headlock of a Hunter using her physical strength. Also, she's been able to clear a symbiote hive with a pistol shooting an electro-sonic bullets to kill them, while Spider-Man has pretty much the same gadget, but for him, it only stuns the symbiote.
@@JCDMentos For me, it was her taking on that gigantic Symbiote in a boss fight despite those things being literal minibosses for Spider-Man. You'd expect this from Black Widow or Silver Sable, not Mary fucking Jane, and even then you'd expect them to really struggle.

The complaint wasn't about ugliness specifically, but about lead writers self insert. Appearance wise, it is kinda ok, i don't give a fuck about it since most of the times i am more interested in what character says and how he/she says it. But that MJ rant in the end of the game is completely out of place. Like cmon, she knew that it was this alien thingy that made Peter act like that. All he ever did before it was busting his ass for the city. Like, he even got a job so he can pay mortgage and shit but he still decided to fucking save people, what a true hero does. In a relatively same situation MJ decided to shit on Spider man, write lies in the article. And while there are consequences for Peter trying to do his best, MJ, acting like a complete asshole, gets no consequences at all, those lies aren't coming to bite her. And that rant. The whole rant felt dissociated because Peter hasn't been an asshole like she says. It feels more like a deliberate rant for a certain person. They took my favorite superhero from the age of 5 till now, and made me hate the character. I could legitimate go on for hour about how I hate the game. And I'm pissed they set up so much for a DLC, instead of just PUTTING IT IN THE FUCKIN GAME. The campaign is 16 too 18 hours long roughly, about 6-8 of that is cutscenes, dumb mini puzzles and MJ Missons. I gotta stop or I'll write a 700 page essay on my hatred lol

What makes the 90’s Symbiote good is that Peter has always had those outbursts of anger, just usually at his breaking point, rather than normally. So when the symbiote makes Peter more aggressive, it feels a lot more natural to the audience as it’s not the first time pissed Peter appears.
Yeah but the Symbiote never did that to him in the comics though. It’s not entirely accurate.

I grew up with Venom basically being an antihero, and he was the symbiote that's bad trying to be good, and Carnage was meant to be the irredeemable must remove now villain. So when og Peter removes Venom because he was fighting crimes at night and feeding on his energy, it didn't really feel as compelling, especially when they wrote in that venom saw Peter as a friend and only did things it thought Peter would do.
Meaning while 90's symbiote made Peter more aggressive, confident and stop his frustrations, which is refreshing for the audience as we always see him get beaten down but rarely fight back socially. But when the symbiote starts pushing away his friends and hurts people, we're like oh shit the symbiotes cool, but it definitely has to go.

Even Web Of Shadows plays on it when he talked to MJ about it. In fact I was more impressed by one of the comic ideas. That both his Spider and Symbiote powers were a curse to him. And they both Symbolically tear Peter apart. Which fits his character and how he sees his powers.

I've gotten into the habit of just watching the "game movie" edits on youtube for most modern games so I can fast track knowing what the games story is without having to invest time and money into getting angry that the game is woke propaganda. I was super excited for spider-man 2. They did an awesome job of building up for something truly exciting for the sequel, and all of it was squandered.

1. Combat is badly designed as attacks come too quickly after the warning and unlockable attacks get mixed up with the dangerous attacks you can parry but the game doesn't properly show you the ones you can parry and the ones you can't. Similarly, attacks often come too quickly preventing you from dodging or blocking because your stuck in a dodge animation.
2. Game is too short with the story feeling like it is missing an entire story arc and Venom barely getting to do much on screen.
3. Miles is the least interesting part of the game besides his parts with Mr negative, Black Cat only appears in 1 mission and doesn't interact with Peter, Mile's deaf GF is a bit Mary sueish and somehow pepper sprayed a symbiote monster after somehow knowing it was behind her. Clestus is also wasted and relegated to side missions even though he could easily have been integrated into the main plot and better connect Miles to Venoms story.
4. Only 1 playable Venom section.
5. Too many MJ missions which people mostly didn't like and insomniac doubled down on it.
6. Peter is somehow weak and needs saving constantly and Insomniac is trying to replace Peter with Miles. Miles having to help Peter remove Venom was awful and kinda beats the whole point of Peter needing to be the one to reject venom instead of having someone help him do it.

All and all the writing is terrible and I personally didn't like the combat design and MJ was tolerable at first but all those missions with her got old fast and it's ridiculous that she somehow can take on Kraven's hunters.
I'll take a wild guess and say the people who made Ratchet & Clank great are no longer in the company. All the greats of the industry quit in 2016 or earlier.
It's true. Many of the R&C devs are gone. Some of them started youtube channels that go into detail on how they developed the first three games. Even back when they were putting gameplay first and winging it with the story, their writing and dialogue was so much more charming than it is now.
The recent Ratchet & Clank games have some pretty cringe worthy dialogue as well.
I’ve been playing Mafia II: Definitive Edition recently and I’ve had this same thought.
While the game itself is buggy and gameplay isn’t the best, it has a solid story, great setting and good oldies soundtrack. The characters have good character development. There are no Mary Sues or brash female characters. The game is a depiction of mid 20th Century America when mobsters had power.
The man who wrote the story also did Kingdom Come Deliverence, which the woke mob attacked because it didn’t have enough representation.

Even the romance subplot felt believable. I just played The Darkness 2 two days ago and had a strikingly similar experience. Good, nuanced characters with real pathos. It's a shame we can't get good solid normal stories in games anymore. I didn't realize how good we had it until it was ripped away from us.

MJ PS4-5 is by far one of the worst love interests in video game history. She keeps complaining about how Peter treats her like she's fragile and has to pay the bills. Meanwhile, she's sneaking into advanced militia and symbiote camps like it's nothing and has to be saved whenever she messes up, and Peter is literally off saving thousands of lives because he's the only one that can and has had to make numerous personal sacrifices to make that happen.
The story should have ended with MJ and Peter breaking up because Peter has a duty to the city as Spider-Man, and MJ clearly can't handle the superhero life. She isn't entitled to belittling Peter Parker just because she can't be his equal and can't handle not being the centre of attention.
You know what, this is a breath of fresh air. As much as I disagree with a lot of your points here, I still liked your review. You also made me understand why I disliked a lot of the parts of the game as well, so I'm kinda like 50/50 on your opinions.

Couldn’t stand the way Peter was sidelined in his own story. Miles is peripheral for almost the entire campaign but always shows up to resolve Peter’s plot lines for him. Miles beats Peter to show him black suit bad, beats Venom and even has a better, more developed skill tree.

Id be able to look past the games other sins like Miles being shoehorned into the plot or horrible pacing, if Mary Jane wasnt a complete travesty of a character and the writers didnt bend and break the entire story to try and make her more capable and relevant than Peter.
They legitimately destroyed Peters character, made him look like a weak ass pansy who constantly needed saving. I found myself groaning every time i saw these characters on screen and how much Peter was expected to grovel in self pity and guilt at his own existence.
In his fight with Wraith the Narritive blames him and acts like hes not capable of taking care of the city because he doesnt kill his enemies.
In the side story with Black Cat, she blames Peter for not being there to help her with her fucking moronic girlfriend trouble. Idk maybe hes too busy SAVING THE CITY EVERY 5 MINUTES to help you and care about your issues.
The game constantly draws comparisons to Miles and acts as though hes the better Spiderman when this is simply not the case, the comments surrounding the two characters makes no sense. Peter mentioning that Miles was capable of changing Negative, saying "ive never been able to successfully rehabilitate any of my villains" even though we literally see many of Spidermans villains, Sandman, Tombstone and Mysterio, all changed due to Peters actions. On top of that that utterly ridiculous comment about the city not needing Peter because it has Miles is fucking braindead. If it werent for Peter the entire world would be Venomized.
Finally the fucking nonsensical blame the narritive puts on Peter after forcefully being fed Symbiote against his will. They act as though Peter committed grave sin even though while donning the symbiote, all he legitimately did was miss phone calls and say mean things. Meanwhile Harry is treated like a victim of the symbiote and somehow Peter is still expected to apologize to him while Venom is destroying the city.
"Manly Jane" never has to apologize or feel remorse for anything she does. The Narritive acts like Peters entire existence is a threat to her well being, and that he should apologize for every problem in her life, INCLUDING her working for J Jonah Jameson, even though Peter was completely supportive of her the entire time.
Then she dons the Symbiote, the same thing Peter did which was a "grave sin", destroying the city and attacking Peter without any remorse or need to apologize.
When Peter was clearly under the influence of the symbiote, she takes everything he says personally. Even though she knows Peter isnt usually like that and he should get the benefit of the doubt. But rather than putting his needs first and worrying about him (because again hes being eaten alive by an alien) she gets mad at him and goes on to write a news article slandering Spidermans name just so she can get a "promotion". None of which shes ever held accountable or responsible for. In fact the narritive acts as though Peter needs to apologize for her horrible actions.
Black Cat doesn’t get to complain. Her DLC was tricking him into thinking he knocked her up so she could steal artifacts or whatever (it’s been a while). Why SHOULD he trust her after that? She’s lucky if he gives her the time of day.
I will say “placating to the symbiote” makes sense. They’re being controlled by homicidal space aliens. You want the person underneath to feel as good about themselves as possible in order to help them get out. Then have a reasonable chat. Because once you slip in they might be wrong, the symbiote is going to crank up their fear to 11 and they’ll pull back. The fact that it continues after though is unacceptable.
I hate how there’s no real closure or good end scene with Peter. He does/says nothing while visiting Harry, and the other one is him pathetically fumbling to say he’s retiring/taking a break. MJ starts a podcast (surprised Synthetic Man didn’t mention “new normal”) that sounds like TH-cam garbage (But what do YOU think? Tell me in the com-). And Miles has a happy moment with his girlfriend.
Also MJ ripping off the symbiote herself is baffling. Sound was not enough on its own in other scenarios so that’s not even an excuse. And with the symbiote takedowns, Peter had to _rip_ them out. The whole story is about how difficult it is to remove it (and as a metaphor for letting go of pain/insecurity). If she can rip it off so easily, on her first attempt, how much of a threat can this really be? Sure she has to snap out of the mentality, but once she does she’s able to rip it off. Even though it’s also physically difficult as it binds to you. I mean, once that first MJ mission started with her running _towards_ a guy with a crossbow, and then later _ripping out_ an arrow in her shoulder (the one’s with the frayed out tips that makes it easy to enter but hard/impossible to pull out) that was a red flag.
I'm pretty sure we weren't supposed to see Wraith as in the right.

Miles' private life is never compromised because of Spider-Man. He never has problems at home or with girls or with money. His life is just perfect. I can't sympathize with him at all.
What's even worse is he's dealing with all of Spider-Man's bad guys, if miles had his own bad guys specifically made for him to challenge his character beliefs he'd immediately have more merit.

I mean, everybody seems to love Miguel O’Hara albeit he’s brown, and everybody also loves Spider-Verse Miles because Spider-Verse Miles is his own thing and his story started AFTER Peter Parker was already dead. He had his own struggles (and that struggles were mainly about the well-being of his dad, the great Jefferson Davis😂) without ruining Peter Parker’s character. Miles in Spider-Verse made Peter Parker feel better about himself and wants to be a hero again.
Meanwhile, Miles in these games. They got rid of the tension that’s crucial to Miles’ struggle and character development in the first game by killing off Jefferson Davis. Jeff works better for the story by being alive than dead because Miles’ best relationship is with his parents and his uncle. Killing him off is just repeating the same plot beat as Uncle Ben. Peter Parker in the game also didn’t feel inspired or reinvigorated by Miles. Instead, Miles just made him feel shit about himself and want to retire, which is against the concept of Spider-Man which is to inspire people.
Yeah, not a single hardship. He never lost a loved one or had to fight a close friend. Not once. It's so unfair.

The bell tower is literally the most iconic moment in the black suit arc and perhaps even the entire Spider-Man story if not the top 5. Far and above where the suit comes from or what it does. It's a thematic representation of confession. The act of removing sin and ultimately forgiveness for the things you've done.
If the writers could not understand this, then they are fundamentally bad storytellers. That's presuming they even know what confession is.
One more thing: In the comics the Fantastic Four tried and failed to remove it. Furthering the idea that it wasn't up to anyone else but Peter himself to remove it.

This game was boring. I tried to like it. I really did. But the side quests suck. Playing as non-Superheroes sucks. Going back and forth between Peter and Miles sucks (there are so many moves in this game it’s hard to remember which move belongs to which character).

Spider-Man is probably the only superhero that would help someone find their lost grandfather. In the comic's he's helped the homeless, he's visited terminally ill children in the hospital, he saved a dog that fell out of a window, he is quite literally a man of the people. Granted i can see how these missions may not make for the most exciting gameplay as a gamer but these moments are things the character is known for and I would argue that they are a very important representation of the Spider-Man character.

People have gotten way too used to Spider-Man being represented as this character who fights big, world destroying threats. Yeah, these side missions may not be the most entertaining gameplay-wise, but they're true to his character and bring him back to his roots. Spider-Man always stood for his community first.

No, in some comics and story and universe, Miles had always been a fresh spiderman when Peter became too old. Hed retire and the next group of spider people like Silk were still young and ready. He was again, aged and ready to take a break.

I enjoyed them, as it showed that her character was more involved in the team, and Peter and Miles were happy for her to help. After all, it does get a bit repetitive with the spiderman combat after a while, so I welcome a slow change, especially since they are much improved in this title over the last :) I find it funny how people disregard them because she "has no powers or anything special", since the whole point of these missions is to show that you don't need super powers to help the ones you care about. She felt useless for so long, and has been given an opportunity to prove herself. I have a feeling that if MJ had missions where she was spider girl or something, people would still complain about them. It's a trend with women in games I've noticed. Miles Morales has been around now for about as long as the original Ditko-Lee run of Spiderman (over 10 years). In that timespan, Peter got most of his major rogues, like: the Chameleon, the Vulture, Doctor Octopus, the Sandman, the Lizard, Electro, Mysterio, the Green Goblin, Kraven the Hunter, the Scorpion, and the Spider Slayers. Peter got his major supporting characters like MJ, Gwen, J. Jonah Jameson, Flash, and Harry Osborne. Peter got his iconic storylines like "If This Be My Destiny" and "The Night Gwen Stacy Died". Peter graduated high school and entered college.
After ten years, Miles has no rogues gallery (The Prowler is the only one that you'll think of), no great runs, and no characterization. Every successful outing Miles has had is when Peter's also there. Marvel's been pushing Miles for a decade with nothing to show for it.

The idea pushed is that Peter never asked to be spiderman however miles did. Peter wanted to settle down and actually live his life. We see this by how he’s promising dates to MJ and trying to reconnect and go to rollercoasters with his best friend, you also see this with how he’s trying to abandon the role of spiderman so that he can work with Harry. Peter’s life is filled with so much loss, the contrast between Miles and Peter in this game is their directed anger. Miles blames others for his issues whereas Peter blames himself, we see this when we go into each others subconscious. Miles is greeted with hostile memories whereas Peter, despite having the thoughts that it would be better that the villains were killed, at the core of it all blamed himself for all the tragedy in his life. He blamed himself for his aunts death.
Miles throughout the game is shown to be looking up to Peter, but being too scared to take that step. Miles started dropping his future for spiderman whereas Peter began dropping spiderman for his future. In essence it’s essentially, Peter is weighed down by all of his guilt whereas Miles was propelled by his anger.
Miles already is a stronger spiderman based on his skill kit. When the two fought, venom/peter was fighting against his own will as well as the bell assisting in his defeat, not too mention this is straight after fighting Kraven. Miles had assistance. When they both fight Venom, peter absolutely put way more hands on a venom which was trying to infect him. Miles was trying to strictly survive in their fight.
Isn’t the whole idea behind spiderman that ANYONE CAN WEAR THE MASK, quite literally said by the creator of marvel and spiderman himself, his very own words lol. Peter isn’t replaceable as he will always be Peter however there’s more to Peter than spiderman, which the whole “I NEED this suit” fight is about…
