I hear them a lot , but rarely see them!

I hear these at least once per day around my place in North Carolina. From what I've seen on other videos, it's hard to get a photo/video of them. Congrats and thanks.

    Almost sounds like a dove

The lower part of the call does sound like a Mourning Dove from far away. Then the lift in the notes and cadence assure the ear. Thanks for your comment.

Then there's the clacking/gulping call that I hear a lot more often than the coo. There was a little of it in there too.

@@rhodawatkins4516 Sorry to be so late in getting back to your comment. The Cuckoo are again calling here (July 29, 2023). The clacking is more obvious when two or more birds are in the same location.

I didnt manage to take a picture but I'm pretty sure its a yellow billed cuckoo I saw in the riparian creek area in Mountain House, CA (rufous flash on wings and long tail). I saw one during late April and saw one again yesterday. Maybe this is it's migratory path.

It is possible that you saw a Yellow-billed. Look to Cornell Univ. maps of breeding and migration. You are off the beaten path, but a straggler may have shown up.
