Rehearsal rehearsal rehearsal, touring touring touring and recording straight to the tour bus and on the road. Probably the hardest working band ever. From the times at the hell house all the way to the plane crash. They were working. There is a great documentary about them I watched. They memorized every solo and Ronnie never wrote down any lyrics because if it wasn’t worth remembering then it wasn’t worth playing. I loved that band.

Yep, and they had worked so hard for so long, that they probably could have taken a break after their latest tour! They all, except maybe Steve Gaines (since he had just joined the band) would have had a decent nest egg saved up by then. They could have gone fishing for a year or two before they had to go back to work! Just another example of how "lifes not fair!" Dudes worked their asses off, ..then died (or got seriously busted up) just before they could really enjoy the fruits of their labor!

Everyone here in the Jacksonville area has a “claim to fame” story about their connection to Lynyrd Skynyrd. I’ve got several, the best of which is my father was Billy Powell’s financial advisor in the early 2000s (just before my dad retired). My pops didn’t know Skynyrd from Elvis, yet Billy invited him over to his home on the west side here and played piano for my dad, saw all his platinum records and got me some autographed pics!😂
Prior to his visit, I remember educating my father as to who they were, that they were a major act-not some little bar band!

Me too. I was stationed in Mayport in the late 80's then lived on in OP and Greencove after I got out. I met Artimus several times. At the Spin Drifter and at Shades one time. Met Judy Grodin at a Christmas party in GCS thrown by 38 specials road manager. Lol.

Roger that! I grew up in Fleming Island. Oh, the “success rate” (if ya know what I mean) I had at Shades back in the day would make Gene Simmons blush.😂😂😂😂😂😂

Saw them on July 4, 1976 at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. Great concert. It was The Outlaws. Blue Oyster Cult, Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top. Poor ZZ, nobody follows Skynyrd. Saw them 2 more times after the crash, but of course, it wasn't the same. Skynyrd live was an experience.

It's about time someone reacted to this incredible song !!! This was written by Steve Gaines who had joined the band about 1& 1/2 years before the band died in the crash . It is much different than Ronnie Van Zant's style of writing . It's great to hear Ronnie sing someone else's song that he truley respected . This would be a song he absolutely loved . He would never have sold out . Ever . Thanks !!!

Any song from their first five studio albums is a goodie. Just close your eyes and pick one and you'll be satisfied. The singer, RVS, was a perfectionist, and he rehearsed over and over and over BEFORE they were even playing out in clubs. Ever song they did in rehearsal was followed by him saying, "One more time". I believe it may have driven some players away in the early days. Those who stuck around found out what greatness means.

There was some truly special talent in Skynyrd during its original run but for my money none were as all around talented and with more potential than Steve Gaines. This song is a great example of that, a song he wrote well before he joined Skynyrd, I truly believe even with all the amazing songs they recorded the best music was still to come because Steve and Ronnie only got a little over a year together. Ronnie was Steve's biggest fan too, he gave the famous quote about how they would all be in Steve's shadow one day because he was just that talented a musician, songwriter and singer. Damn shame the world lost Ronnie, Steve and Cassie in that crash but I bet they have been writing together and jamming in the afterlife for a long time now....

  • @mrnobody3161

Lynyrd Skynyrd with 13 of the Band members now decreased, they were always a 3 guitar powerhouse as they reunited, reformed, and reconstituted the band for decades. Sometimes a Band is more than the individual members, it becomes its own entity continuing on the legacy for future generations to enjoy. I don't see anything wrong with that as long as the effort is genuine and respectful of the magic of a Band.

There's always comparisons between Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Bros, both being from the deep South. Skynyrd's music was more polished and structured. Ronnie was arranging the music to be very radio friendly. The Allman Bros stayed in the Blues groove, with more improvisational Blues/Jazz jam arrangements.
