The Eminem situation is different but you’re spot on with why Drake filed the petition. He hasn’t officially sued. He’s requesting the information needed to then sue, abit of a chess move but let’s see if it works.
The lawsuit is not actually a direct suit between him and the label. It's a complaint which is basically to collect evidence. That can lead to a class action, meaning many parties can get involved. Essentially the big thing that he's claiming is that UMG and Spotify for Not Like Us reduced the licensing fee by 30% and did not disclose this. This is to promote the song, get it on more playlists, run up the numbers and make cheaper for Spotify at volume. This is illegal, and every artist under UMG can join a class action suit if proven (even Kendrick can sue for the rest of his collection) for essentially 30% of their catalogs license earnings to Spotify. They've basically re-established what a dollar is in streaming, for one song, by one artist, without legally disclosing it. If the suit goes through and Drake wins or UMG has to settle, even Kendrick gets paid lol. UMG's side is they're trying to devalue Drake during contract negotiations, its pretty simple.
