  • This very pretty coat pocket set was made by Phillips in Holland for sale in the USA under their Norelco brand. This radio also came in brown, but I think it looks best in black (which is the more common color).

That's a nice looking set. Philips had a knack for making even their more modest priced products look more expensive than they were.

I agree, this is an awesome looking radio, both inside and out! The big tuning dial is a plus!

+JacksJunkDotCom Thanks! The large dial is nice to have on this set because it is very sensitive and selective.

Shockingly good build quality and general order inside, head and shoulders above most others I have seen. And to my eyes, a really classy case design. Easily my favorite radio from your posts, It's a jewel! Thank's for sharing!

Thanks! I agree, this set is one of the best European sets in terms of looks, and it's well built to boot.

What a cool looking radio and in such a good condition. Amazing to think that set is practically sixty years old! Still going pretty well after all those years, that's surely a testament to its build quality, excellent design and of course the fact it's been well looked after. A great radio and, once again, another brilliant find by you Matt. Thanks for the post I always enjoy watching them. Have a great day bye for now.

+Peter Lorimer Thanks Peter! A lot of early transistor radios still work somewhat with all their original parts, but few work well. Oddly enough, I was able to get this set cheaply, which was nice.

Indeed... I wonder how many electric/electronic devices people in sixty years time will be able to say the same about! Lol I know from personal experience I've had to chuck out loads of modern built electric gadgets because they've given up working for one reason or another and they're just not, or can't, be mended. My iPhone 3gs springs to mind. There's no way that would be cheerfully firing up in fifty or sixty years time lol In fact it's not five years old and it's completely kaput lol... What do they call it? Built in obsolescence lol... Bye for now.

Yeah, unfortunately the build quality is not what it used to be, but thankfully the costs are not what they used to be either, radios like this cost $500 - $700 (adjusted for inflation from 1958). Unlike these relatively simple devices, most modern electronics will be pretty much un-reparable in the future if they fail beyond some bad capacitors, due to all the custom integrated circuits in use these days.

Very nice! I love that big tuning knob and the black and chrome combo. I like that it uses AA batteries too.

I have a red one made in Vuutoren De witte kat , Holland with German cities on the dial. Any one know any thing about this one? One of the cities is Stuttgart where my husband served in the military late 1950"s. I would like to know the size battery and placement of them in the radio.

Buy a new radio and it would look scratched up after 2 months
