People misunderstand Stockhausen; they too readily assume his music will be dissonant. In many ways much of it is more accessible than the music of Schoenberg, for example.
I love Stockhausen's electronic music. There's something ethereal about all of it, very hard to put one's finger on. I first recall being mesmerized by not by Stockhausen's music so much as the titles of his works, long before I ever heard them. I used to sit around the library back in the '70s when I was in high school, and my favorite "reading" was the Schwann record and tape catalogs our library would subscribe to. So, if you looked up Stockhausen in the classical titles, you'd see stuff like "Kontakte", "Mikrophonie", and "Hymnen." Wow. All of these were on Deutsche Grammophon at the time of course, and they seemed so remote and cool and other-worldly somehow. It was enough to fuel a high school kid's imagination for days, believe me. And when I finally got the chance to buy some of those records and listen to them, they were no disappointment. And they still aren't!
I still have all the Stockhausen Lps on Deutsche Grammophone. I love TRANS and all the other orchestral works as well as his electronics. Having said that, I think his electronic sound track for IN ABSENTIA, a film made by the Quay Brothers, is his greatest electronic work. (But I also love Oktophonie).
This reminds me of Billie Eilish, but you wouldn't understand because she's got real problems and I have depression because I listen to Billie Eilish everyday and I'm 15 already and you know NOTHING about Billie Eilish
I'm just listening to this for the first time and loving it! I've not explored 'Licht' much, but I saw 'Oktophonie' at Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival this year and was inspired! Stockhausen is my first love!
The description is a description of how you listen, and what you listen for in 'music'. There are cultures, and ages, where the semantic line between audio performance art, and music, may be much lower. When I was a child, I eagerly listened to all sounds as miraculous. As a returning child, I work to listen to all sounds as miraculous.
I think it refers to the way sound travels through space..I could be wrong , though. but I think that it represents the way the sound flies through air using the 8 speaker setting... maybe the youtuber can clarify more. this one seems to use only 4 speakers.
I remember a story regarding the Berio Sinfonia, where some members of the audience were not sure if Berio was 'pulling their leg'. After some discussion, especially regarding the texts and Berio's relationships to Joyce and Beckett, the skepticism left, and they were able to enjoy the work as art. I can only read you elliptical comment as a reflection of your not being sure where, in your mind, music separates from . . . choose your term. My experience with KS, when I did not 'get it', was to put the piece away until my hearing had progressed to that level. The last time that happened for me with KS was in about 1968,
No industrial music without Stockhausen, I swear ! :)
... and No Art without me !
End of the story.
Alicea Web Splash :-)

Honestly I'd rather have dissonance than NOTHING! This piece is like watching paint dry.
Masterpiece. Stockhouzen's "New World".... Wish his music travel together with Voyagers

da decenni tento di ascoltare Stockhausen ed ogni anno ne ascolto qualche ora in più...
on dirait qu'il combine les harmoniques pures des instruments accoustiques et électroniques
