And just think he did this every night on stage when he starred in the production. Ted Neeley who is in the movie from 1973 is still singing this song today at 78 yrs old. check him out. the whole musical of JC Superstar is phenomenal. Love you guys for doing this.
Ted was so very good and I believe his version of this song from the movie was the best and could not be exceeded, better than Ian Gilliam on Broadway and the original recording. He continues to sing it at nearly 80, but cannot hit the highs he once could.
I am not religious but i saw this live in london it was amazing with steve in it. my friend brought me tickets for my birthday. It was the last night that the whole group would be singing together ❤
I was lucky enough to see this man perform the whole stage show to this song…Jesus Christ Superstar in London for my 21st Birthday many, many years ago. Once I told the lady at the booking office that the tickets were for my 21st Birthday she said “she had some special seats for me” and gave me her best wishes for my birthday, it turns out the ‘special seats’ were actually part of the set on stage so I got to witness his whole performance close up and even give the cast high fives as they came off stage…..it was magical, emotional, spine tingling and totally awesome! That was 27 years ago and it is still hands down the most memorable birthday to date ❤💯🔥🔥🎶🎵
I was 12 or 13 when the movie and soundtrack hit the theaters and never saw the movie for about 20 years, but I've owned the soundtrack uninterrupted since. One of the best recordings, stage productions and plays I've heard. And seeing Ted Neely perform AND JOHN LEGEND'S production for television are exquisite interpretations. The title is Jesus Christ Superstar, but Judas'character has the BEST role of the show and THE BEST musical performances, imo...
I'm so glad you reacted to this beautiful version of an incredible song. I've seen Ted Neeley several times on tour and didn't think anyone could surpass him until I watched this video of Steve. I still love to hear Ted sing this, but this touches somewhere deep. Hope you get a chance to check out the music he has done since then. It's all wonderful. Thank you again.
I had the same reaction when I saw this performance some time ago. He totally nailed this song. Wish they had recorded the musical when Balsamo had the lead role.
Very lucky to have seen Steve Balsamo in the 1996 production, London. Rhe whole cast was incredible but I will never forget his performances of Gethsemane. Absolutely breathtaking to witness. He dropped to his knees for the big "die"
The original stage version had Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) playing Jesus, I am not sure there is any video of this, but I bought the original sound track after I went to the local show here in Sydney. not a patch on Ian but still good.
Ian Gillan sang the part of Jesus on the Musical album that preceded any stage productions. He turned down the part in the movie and on stage because it would have interfered with his work with Deep Purple. The magnificent Ted Neeley was cast as Jesus in the first stage production and movie.
I watched the movie 5 times in 10 days when it was released. Watched on TV a number of times. Listen to the soundtrack. Watched Ted Neeley (the original) in Montreal around 12 years ago, when he was close to retirement. This Steve Balsamo gets really close to the original version.
I’ve seen Neeley live in JCS 4 x in the last 50 years. I saw Carl Anderson as Judas 3 x before he passed. Ted’s not retired. He’s still performing in the musical in Europe. He just got back from Rome a few months ago.
If you ever get the chance to see the Play, take it. The Movie is terrific it will have you sitting on the edge of your seat & your heart will feel like it's jumping out of you chest.
Steve was in college with me studying perf arts in wales Uk and he played this part in the college production .. Rhian lloyd was the vocal coach at the time and parts of what steve did in his audition has been included in this song ever since ..AL Webber was so impressed with him ... THE best Jesus in JCS in my opinion ... steve has sang with many people including john lord of deep purple fame and collaborated with the late eric woolfson on his alum Poe (about edgar allen poe) check out the song immortal from the show which steve also sang at this event
Probably the best of the current crop of performers plying this part. I still prefer Ted Neeley...his version has a bit more edge to his sound. But no shade on Steve...he's incredible!
This is such a deep interpretation for Jesus's prayer in the Garden of Gethseme,,,its literally according to Christian Scripture and teachings, when Jesus makes the choice to see things through to the Cross. Powerful and moving.
that top note is crazy!! Great singer, but really all it does is make me want to hear John Farnham's version (1992) in Australia's Jesus Christ Superstar. In fact I'm going to do it right now!
If it isnt the 1973 Ted Neely version you are missing out. His voice, combined woth his very moving portrayal of Christ is what really nailed this song to history. The man acted an entire movie with his eyes. You should do over with his movie version.
Always find the comments section on this very frustrating. Yes Neeley and Gillan are also fantastic, but its not a competition. Steve is an incredible performer and my personal favourite and his live version of Child in time with the late great Jon Lord is also incredible!
In my opinion, many singers did this so well, but I have a reference of Ian Gillan, the first record from JCS. He was the first, chosen by Andrew Lloyd Weber, and still sounds to me as the best voice and interpretation.
Lovely voice but have never found any singer who brings the raw emotion to this song that Ted Neely does. I’m an agnostic and Neely can make me believe the man Jesus existed and would have gone through this exact thought and emotional journey
Hello from Tarragona, Spain. I usually see your reactions and I you recomended listen and reaction to Camilo Sesto's Gethsemane '77. Andrew Lloyd Weber Said that he thinks was the best version of his own song. It's an incredible performance. Bye!!
I am a 64 old Dutchman and a big NW and Floor Jansen fan They have also brought out a version of this number and sorry I can't listen to it For me there are only two persons who can sing this Ted Neely But i love this one the most Great reaction and thank you for this version and not the NW choice Greetings
Very good, but I’ve seen Ted Neeley do this live 4 times from the 1970s-the 2000s. This guy does surpass Ted. Go to TH-cam and watch Ted film performance of this in the film version filmed in Israel! It’ll take your breath away and bring you to tears. Even better, watch the film.
I do t know ow what y’all have against Dan Vasc after Amazing Grace y’all quit yall are missing out on so much he also does this song much better he does a theater version please react to more Dan Vasc he has a huge following I know yall see everybody reacting to him there is a reason for it still love yall
Rush ~ Earthshine ~ R30 Tour ~ [HD 1080p] ~ 9/24/2004 at the Festhalle Frankfurt, Germany Hey WOLF HUNTERZ Time for another RUSH Reaction. Check out this cut from the R30 tour in Germany. Earthshine is one of the best performances from this show in my humble opinion. This song is from the Vapor Trails album which is the first record the band made after Neal returned from his emotional journey after the deaths of his daughter and wife. Hope you enjoy. Thanks.
Ian gillan sang the original cast recording. Ian the singer of deep purple gives a master class. Steve's good Ian's better. Lyrics like try not to worry from everything alright is a song I've, listened to for fifty years
Now go and listen to John Farnham do the same number from the Australian production - soooo much emotion in John's rendition, it will take your breath away!
I love Neely's performance of "Gethsemane" too. Both versions are each artists' own interpretation of the number and I love that singers like to bring their own flavour to the same song
Best version ever in my opinion, Steve is amazing
Getsemani by Dan Vasc........try it.
Ian gillan clears ez
Try spanish Camilo Sesto.
Completely agree.
And just think he did this every night on stage when he starred in the production. Ted Neeley who is in the movie from 1973 is still singing this song today at 78 yrs old. check him out. the whole musical of JC Superstar is phenomenal. Love you guys for doing this.
Ted from Ranger, TX.
This version is incredible has me in tears and I'm not christian
Ted was so very good and I believe his version of this song from the movie was the best and could not be exceeded, better than Ian Gilliam on Broadway and the original recording. He continues to sing it at nearly 80, but cannot hit the highs he once could.

So impressive! I saw Jesus Christ Superstar live in London 1977. It still leaves my emotional.
I watched that video maybe 100 times! One in a lifetime performance! Just amazing!!!
when Jesus is begging God to show him a reason why he should die , only to be forgotten, and then God shows him ........gets me every time.
I cry every time I hear that song

Totally and utterly agree re: Judas
Gotta check out heaven on their minds from tim minchins version of judas!

Saw him in London do this in 96 and I was an unbelievable performance.
If you can, find the 1973 movie version with Ted Neely - even more raw and powerful. Also, the John Legend PBS production is pretty cool.
He actually cries every performance. Genius!
I had the same reaction when I saw this performance some time ago.
He totally nailed this song.
Wish they had recorded the musical when Balsamo had the lead role.
They did do a CD soundtrack with Steve Balsamo as JC.
I have a copy of it on cassette tape 😂
Awesome steve makes me cry everytime the fear anger and vunerability he has as jesus hes superb gave it his all amazing
Very lucky to have seen Steve Balsamo in the 1996 production, London. Rhe whole cast was incredible but I will never forget his performances of Gethsemane. Absolutely breathtaking to witness. He dropped to his knees for the big "die"

Steve ❤ best of the best 🎉
He uses that 3 1/2 octave voice singing Americana and prog rock as well. Go down the TH-cam Steve Balsamo rabbit hole and enjoy.
Every time I watch this, my hair stands on end

For a long time now I’ve felt it a tragedy that they never convinced Chris Cornell to cover this song.
DAN VASC is The best version.
Loved this reaction - thanks

Got to love Ted Neeley Better have grown up with him He is still doing this to this day and has done it the longest.
Always find the comments section on this very frustrating. Yes Neeley and Gillan are also fantastic, but its not a competition. Steve is an incredible performer and my personal favourite and his live version of Child in time with the late great Jon Lord is also incredible!

This is the best version of this amazing song, no doubt
You should really watch the movie. It is right down your alley.
If you like that you check out Camilo Sesto version too.
You should really watch the original version of Gethsemane by Ted Neeley from the 1973 movie Jesus Christ Superstar. Talk about vocals!
thats my mate steve balsamo!
Lovely voice but have never found any singer who brings the raw emotion to this song that Ted Neely does. I’m an agnostic and Neely can make me believe the man Jesus existed and would have gone through this exact thought and emotional journey
Check out 1970 version with Ian Gillian. The original.
Gethsemane of Canilo sesto is the best version
Hello from Tarragona, Spain. I usually see your reactions and I you recomended listen and reaction to Camilo Sesto's Gethsemane '77. Andrew Lloyd Weber Said that he thinks was the best version of his own song. It's an incredible performance. Bye!!
Watch Dan Vasc’s version. His is the best. Dan is a heavy metal singer from Brasil.
I still love Ted Neely in the 73 movie doing this song
You really need to watch Dan Vasc version it is truly epic
Spanish version is the BEST
he is great but the emotion I feel when Ian Gillan sing this song is something I don't get with anyone else!
Very good, but I am still amazed with the original by Ted Neely who can still bring it to this day 50 years later.
Please guys, try the John Farnham version of this song
It’s magic isn’t it
I am a 64 old Dutchman and a big NW and Floor Jansen fan They have also brought out a version of this number and sorry I can't listen to it For me there are only two persons who can sing this Ted Neely But i love this one the most Great reaction and thank you for this version and not the NW choice Greetings
8 shows a week must take it out of you
Try spanish version from Camilo Sesto (live). Its the "most metal" verson ever.
You should check out Dan Vasc's Gethsemane. It's phenomenal.
The holy G haha
Very good, but I’ve seen Ted Neeley do this live 4 times from the 1970s-the 2000s. This guy does surpass Ted. Go to TH-cam and watch Ted film performance of this in the film version filmed in Israel! It’ll take your breath away and bring you to tears. Even better, watch the film.
The movie set in Israel acting while climbing a mountain. Moving. Ted Neely the best.
I'd love you to watch the Aussie version with John Farnham, and Jon Stevens (Noiseworks), Angry Anderson (Rose Tattoo) from 1992. 👏👏💞
See the 1973 movie with Ted neeley as jesus christ.
I do t know ow what y’all have against Dan Vasc after Amazing Grace y’all quit yall are missing out on so much he also does this song much better he does a theater version please react to more Dan Vasc he has a huge following I know yall see everybody reacting to him there is a reason for it still love yall
Svp regardez la version de Ian Gillan 🎉 1ère version toutes celles d'après sont conforme à celle de Gillan.
Now compare it to John Farnhams performance of the same song! A master class.
Need to listen to the movie with Ted neely in isreal.
Hey you two, check out the band Ruby the Hatchet.
You should check our John Farnham version
REACT DAN VASC TOO IN Gethsemane HE IS AMAZING, U CRY

Ted. Original score. Nothing else has touched his performance on the original soundtrack. Sorry. Not sorry.
No, you’re absolutely correct. That’s the only version that hits me. It’s to “precious” from others. Too, careful. I don’t feel it.
Now go and listen to John Farnham do the same number from the Australian production - soooo much emotion in John's rendition, it will take your breath away!
Need to see Ted neeky. In my opinion the best. Set in Isreal. Not biblical but very moving.
Tremendous. I used to play this while making out with my girlfriend in high school.
NO NO NO HELL NO!!!!!! There is only ONE person who can do this the justice it deserves & that is Ted Neeley. P E R I O D!! !! !! !! !!
Checkout a band call Slave and then so g call Slide
A number of great singers have given wonderful performances, and Steve is certainly one! However...for me Ted Neeley is "it"
Ted Neeley.
Nothing like Ted's rendition. His is best.
here is only one SUPERstar jesus christ : Ted Neely
You failed to mention the possibility that the teacher was a total dick. Quite a few of them are. I'd say this is the most likely reason.
The original version by Ted Neely is so much better imho
I love Neely's performance of "Gethsemane" too. Both versions are each artists' own interpretation of the number and I love that singers like to bring their own flavour to the same song
Ian Gillan’s performance on the original concept album is my personal favorite.
Ted kills it! My fav by far.
Neely's version is NOT the original and didn't compare to Ian Gillan (original album)
@@stephenp.6395 Sorry,my bad...didn't know about the ian gillan's version. Just listened and i confirm my initial thoughts though
Not as good as Glenn Carter, but good
John Farnham is way better!
WAY better!!🥲
Sorry, it’s Ted Neeley or no one. Sorry. I’m spoiled on it.
Ted Neeley did it better….over and over and over again.
Nope. Ted Neeley is king.
steve is AMAZING in jcs i reacted very similarly the first time i saw this lol
