    my dad was in hospital in a coma for about a week after a cardiac arrest. specifically in king's college hospital, of which denmark hill is the closest station that we could use to get to it to visit. whilst those journeys to the hospital were always rather sad and upsetting, especially the first one, the station building and the walk to the hospital are quite pretty and almost somewhat peaceful despite it being a busy area. it was nice to have that one little positive thing amongst a darker time.
    and yes, my dad is absolutely fine now.

    I used Denmark Hill Station when I worked at Kings College Hospital. When the Pheonix & Firkin as it was then, opened, I was one of the first customers. You could buy a T shirt that said , “If Pheonix my pint I’ll firkin hit him”. The Firkin were a SE London chain of pubs which had their own brewery in each pub.

    As someone from Denmark, it’s cool to know a bit of London is named after my country.

    • @hb1338
      @hb1338 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      The name is said to originate from Queen Anne's husband, Prince George of Denmark (Duke of Cumberland), who hunted in the area. The most notable thing about Prince George is how little impact he made on anything, though the Prince of Denmark's March (aka Trumpet Voluntary) was written in his honour.

    • @markrl75
      @markrl75 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@shawnli4746 - DAN-Air actually has nothing to do with Denmark but stands for Davies and Newman Air Services. They were a city ship broker and insurance company who ended up in the airline business pretty much by accident after acquiring an aircraft from a firm they were insuring who went bankrupt. They somehow ended up as one of Europe's largest charter airlines. Initially known as Dan Air they added the 'London' suffix due to the understandable confusion caused by the name, many people wrongly assuming they were a Danish company. All the the Dan Air London aircraft had a compass symbol on the tail which reflected the companies shipping heritage.

    I go through Denmark Hill every few months, and I've always marvelled at its ornate brickwork etc, lovingly and respectfully refurbished - the Victorians certainly knew how to make an impression with their architecture.
    Denmark Hill wasn't the only Soth London station to house a religious establishment - albeit a bogus one in this case. A room at Crystal Palace was taken for while in the 1960s by an outfit calling itself The Holy Roman Catholic Church or some such - it had no connection with the Vatican, or indeed godliness of any flavour, but was, as far as I know, a sordid criminal enterprise connected to a predatory Bogus bishop.
    None of which detracts from the magnificence of Victorian railway architecture - thanks for another fascinating excursion by rail!

The pub was originally one of the David Bruce "Firkin" (A size of beer cask) chain of brewpubs called the "Phoenix and Firkin" and has a rather large railway station (not platform clock inside. You could see the brewery, which was in the basement, though a small window in part of the floor and there was a garden gauge model train that ran on top of part of the bar-back. Unfortunately it later became on "O'Neil's" mock Irish pub before returning to be the Phoenix again.

    I'd never have thought of going to Denmark Hill but your film gave me a lighbulb moment. When I was a teenager we went to live in London for a couple of years (1967 - 1970) - the worst years of my life. The station was a derelict ruin. I once cycled there from our home near Clapham Junction. I had no idea it was such a wonderfully photogenic place now.
    I'm writing this from my winter retreat near Perpignan in France, there's a village near here called Palau del Vidre and my Catalan friends laugh when I say "Ah - Crystal Palace!" (You can check that with Google translate). It has a dis-used station on the Perpignan-Port Bou line, still there.

    That overhead electrification was fairly unusual for the UK - it was 6600VAC at low frequency (25Hz) instead of the usual mains 50Hz. A similar system was also used on the Lancaster, Morecambe and Heysham line, later converted to 50Hz as part of trials that led to the 25KVAC system used today. The reason for the low frequency AC is a bit technical, I could be here all week...

      @lordmuntague 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Well if you all insist. I make no claims to be another Fran Blanche, Big Clive, Tim Hunkin etc., but here goes.
      Trains of that era had series wound traction motors, which are generally DC only. 3rd (and indeed 4th) rail provides pretty much exactly the relatively low voltage and very high current that those motors need. However, the kit is expensive, needing lineside feeder stations every 4 Km or so.
      AC power is much cheaper and easier to transmit over longer distances (e.g. the 25KVAC system has a range of perhaps 40 Km). Putting AC in a DC motor does actually work, except that it will quickly burn out. Changing AC into DC on board a train was iffy, using things like mercury arc rectifiers (see the tale of the Glasgow Blue Trains), which were fine at the lineside but not so much on a moving train.
      The alternative was to modify the motors to stop them overheating (caused by induction, the same principal by which an induction hob works). The result was the Universal Motor, capable of working on DC or AC. However, the usual 50 Hz mains wasn’t so suitable, so they used half that frequency instead which was much better. In fact, most of Europe still uses 16.7 Hz AC for railway traction as a legacy of the system developed in Germany. This was popular with countries which had limited black coal, but had lots of lignite (brown coal) or hydro power, making it very popular in Scandiwegian countries and the like.
      There were AC Induction Motors, but these are controlled not by changing the voltage but by changing the frequency of the AC, and the electronics needed for that didn’t become widespread until the 1980s. If you’ve listened to any hit recorded with an FM Synthesis keyboard (Yamaha DX series etc) then you’ve heard the system that controls modern traction - its no coincidence that Class 350s etc make strange warbling noises.
      I’ve probably got some of that wrong, but I won’t be the least bit offended if more knowledgeable persons set me straight - I consider that helpful education.
      Sorry Jago, I’ll shut up now. You’ve enough problems (like recovering from seeing Geoff Marshall in the shower - or is that what the protective goggles were for?) without me clogging the channel up with techie stuff.

    I'm always fascinated by the number of not-quite-connections there are in this area. You can't get from Clapham or Wandsworth to Brixton because the line passes over and there are no platforms on the LCDR lines. You can't get from Brixton to Denmark Hill because the platforms are closed. You can't get from Loughborough Junction there for similar reasons. Therefore any Southeastern suburban service to Victoria travels a long way without any useful connection

    A station I've gone *through* a lot over the years but not often have gone *to*. Honestly, it is a remarkably pretty and ornate building for what it ostensibly 'just a commuter station', but then again it is rather a busy station serving a busy area (its proximity to two hospitals and one of Kings' campuses definitely means it should be up to the task), and acting as an interchange between 3 services.
    Interesting to dive into its history and see that this lovely building faced being destroyed, that this pretty busy station went into decline. It's great to see it thriving and better than ever nowadays.
    And 'The Phoenix'. Excellent, lol.
    Great video!

    Denmark Hill is a smaller version of St. Pancras, I remember in the 1990s when only the old London Bridge to Victoria South London line and the Blackfriars to Sevenoaks line were the only trains to serve it.
    Now it has the Thameslink which absorbed the old Sevenoaks service, the Overground which absorbed the SLL, and now has a service to Dartford and Gravesend via Lewisham, Blackheath and Bexleyheath, and a couple of longer distanced services to Maidstone, Medway, Faversham, Canterbury and Dover.
    It’s become a rather nifty and unexpected hub similar to other major South East London stations like Lewisham, Woolwich Arsenal & Bromley South

    On of the reason's why Denmark Hill has been so popular throughout it's life is in part due to the Salvation Army's International Officer Training College that you can see in a few of the shots across the road. It's going to become even more popular soon when they finish construction on the new Territorial Headquarters of The Salvation Army that is being built on the side of the existing Training College and Heritage Museum.

    I think I only used Denmark Hill once, when the line to Herne Hill was being maintained, and BR's solution was to provide a bus service from Denmark Hill. Which would have been fine, except that some bright spark decided that the bus service should link with the twice hourly rail service by leaving a few minutes BEFORE the latter arrived. Which it duly did. Otherwise I'd probably have forgotten that occasion by now.

    Had always assumed that Denmark Hill was an LBSC station because of the style. However, it seems that due to the alliance, the impecunious LCDR ended up building a fine station much nicer than their usual spartan offerings. Heartening to see its renaissance thanks to the craft pub and then the Overground, neatly reusing the old South London line which has undergone 3 cycles of success and decline due to trams and changing traffic needs. Incidentally "ulterior motives" (0:55) seems in another light to be imaginative business enterprise, which resulted in the retention of a fascinating building (at least until it burnt down in 1936), pleasure for millions of visitors, employment, and profits for the railway companies and associated businesses. Nice point on carbon-positive or negative (6:48), since we mainly talk about carbon-neutral; I'm not sure now :) Thanks for another enlightening and entertaining year of videos Jago, and Merry Christmas!

    It is a great pleasure to see how plenty of formerly shabby stations have been restored to a standard one would never have thought possible, in fact to an appearance they probably only ever had on paper before, because in the steam age nothing survived urban air pollution for so long that it could even be completed while still looking good.
    Seeing how fine some old buildings have become, I think that by now some restraint would be in order in choosing routes for even occasional steam heritage trips, lest all those admirable and expensive efforts should go to waste.

    Hello Jago:
    So glad you've highlighted Denmark Hill station here today. Peckham Rye, next along the line, which is currently being renovated - very, very slowly! - shares a similar history presumably. Certainly, it has similar architecture with another grand entrance hall and function rooms - except compared with Denmark Hill, Peckham Rye is inverted (UP to the platforms, not down). The only things you might have mentioned, and shown, when talking about the ''contemporary'' station, would have been the new footbridge and the lifts now installed and much welcomed, in contrast to the very ornate high-Victorian stairways further down the platform. Thank you, it's history was fascinating: and presumably it's close proximity to one of the capital's great (teaching) Hospitals (King's College) would have been another region for its location. Don't tell the Salvation Army, you left them out!! Than k you as ever. Noël Tredinnick

Back in the 1970s when I commuted to school on those South London railways and explored well beyond the prescribed route, I was amazed by the intricate architecture of Denmark Hill station building - it seemed far too extensive for the task required (like the Crystal Palace stations). It's great that it survived fire and demolition threats to serve as a very different type of pub.

    I haven’t been there for several years, but the canopy on the centre platform was supported by a steel structure at the bottom of the stairs which seemed to have been cut down from something taller. Could it possibly have been one of the LBSC electrification structures?

    • @gslug1
      @gslug1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I've always assumed the same - that it is the bottom part of a stanchion for the overhead. Presumably the original canopy stanchions flanking it were removed and the canopy supported by this structure. There are several other bits of the LBSC overhead still in evidence: The lighting gantries in Streatham Hill depot are the most obvious, but there is a stanchion set into the viaduct parapet at Battersea Park, and a lot of stubs cut off at their bases or poking out of retaining walls.
