There was a case in Montreal. There was a power station with tall fence all around it signs about the voltage level. His friends dared him to pass over the fence and walk on the equipment. He did it. I don't know what he touched but he was electrocuted. There was another case, also in Montreal. It was at the Jacques Cartier bridge. This bridge is about 50 m off the river’s surface. For some reason, he passed over a fence and there is this area between the sidewalk of the bridge and the asphalt for the cars. He fell through the area. I don’t know the rest. Teen boys tend to take more risks.

gytux0258 just putting it in your mouth causes it to release the liquid. That's why you handle it with dry hands and people actually do eat these, so calling others "idiots" is unnecessary.
Notice how at the end, it was said that JR made *a* recovery, not a *full* recovery. He'll have some permanent damage and continue to suffer some issues for the rest of his life from what he did.
If his Mother had not been around and getting him help, he might not have made it. Sometimes you present these cases, I swear, they sound like a goner and then they survive. Amazing.
Water would have diluted the solution and would have bonded with its molecules, preventing what’s left of it from doing so with the cell membranes that haven’t been damaged yet. As the guy said, the molecular makeup of the detergent varies heavily per brand, and the mother had no clue which brand it was. Inducing vomiting would have further spread the detergent in his system rather than expel it since it’s water soluble. That being said, the water is simply to help keep you alive long enough for the paramedics to arrive. Regarding milk, in this situation, yes, it would have helped more in neutralizing the solution considering it has both water and fat molecules.
@Angel Legendary No and this is two fold adding more h20 to a solution makes a basic solution less basic laundry detergent being around 13-14 on the Ph scale and water being around 7 respectively depending on how pure it is. part 2: by adding water youre giving the solution free floating water to react with for the basic solutions hydrophilic ends to attach to the drinking water being added rather than the thin, moist, protective, mucous layer of the esophagus which if thats stripped away then its vulnerable like he said in the video to the rest of the basic solution to do severe damage. so to put it simply adding water both dilutes the solution making the effects less extreme and prevents at least some of the solution from stripping the mucous layer of the esophagus and then proceeding to damage the healthy cells underneath. Granted all of this happens VERY quickly and adding water 10 seconds later might not even be able to help much because most of the damage has already been done its just to flush out the remaining solution that could be trickling down or backed up because his pipes are swelling and closing
Makes me think of that guy who tried to commit suicide by drinking Draino-basically a much much more aggressive version of what this kid went through, and I cannot even begin to imagine how painful-and it dissolved his entire esophagus, but he somehow survived and had his esophagus reconstructed on the _outside_ of his body. It looks insane, he has to use his hands to push food down it when he "swallows" because it's just a tube, no muscles, so he needs to force it down manually.
I'd expect this out of a toddler who doesn't know better or an elderly person with dementia, but its baffling that a 17 year old kid was dumb enough to do this.
I know this is six years old, but I won't hold back credit where due. Dr. Bernard, you are everything good about TH-cam. Super happy that I stumbled across your channel finally, absolutely love your dedication to not only telling interesting stories, but being 100% accurate and teaching us along the way. Absolutely awesome.
Just playing devil’s advocate here, but you do have to admit that whoever thought making laundry detergent pods look so appetizing needs a job change. I have always had the same issue with “fruit scented” soap or detergent, and they make it in bright colors with pictures of fruit on it. It’s more of a danger to small children, who can’t read the labels, and might think that it is a fruit juice. I could describe a child’s drink in the exact same way as I can a liquid detergent, as a large plastic container with a brightly colored liquid and fruit on the bottle. Yes, it is dumb to eat a detergent pod, however some of the blame should lie on whoever designed it to look like a piece of candy. Teenagers eating these things is largely a rare and nonexistent problem, however the dangers are there for small children who can’t read warning labels. Like who thought it was a smart idea to put images of a yummy food, fruit, on a bottle of highly toxic chemicals? And the bright colors don’t really help either, there is a reason pharmaceutical pills use certain colors such as purples, blues, and whites, because instinct makes us cautious of these, as in the wild many poisonous plants are shades of blues, purples, and whites. However, selling them in these symmetrical, fun looking, brightly colored orange and bright blue packages are a bad idea. Yes, parents should babyproof their houses, but they might miss something, or maybe their friend’s house has something left out. Would children still poison themselves? Probably, but much less frequently, because many of these packaging decorations not only fail to convey danger other than using words, but they actually put pictures of food on the package. You should not need to read to be able to tell the difference between a yummy, sweet drink(fruit juice) and a extremely toxic substance.
I hope this video trends. Not only do you deserve the recognition for making such fascinating videos but also a lot of idiots could really benefit from seeing what happens when you eat tide pods.
You're right, most are not as dumb as this person to do so. On the other hand, this has become a trend and overall the number of people being hospitalized due to eating tide pods in the US is almost as high this year after only one month as it was all of last year. It's not like it's not happening.
Lulu Shar that's the point of the joke. Everybody JOKES about eating Tide Pods, but no one actually does it. Sadly, some people don't get that it's a joke and genuinely try it.
We need to have a talk with our children and tell them "You're going to die if you eat stuff you shouldn't, or survive and be an internet laughing stock for almost dying". Everyday. Until this kind of stuff stops happening.
All his videos do this to me. They bring out the worst of my anxiety and I always pull me in with the titles and I struggle to watch more than a few minutes
I love how the presenter breaks down the medical terminology into understandable portions. He or the script writer would make a fun and valuable teacher.
Wow - 107k likes! These videos are so good, they reach so many people and I’ve learned such a lot from them. Not that I need a lesson in why I shouldn’t eat laundry pods, but I can really see teenage boys doing what the video describes. If watching this video stops just one person from taking part in such an idiotic contest, it’s been worth it. Hearing about the devastating consequences makes the danger so much more real than any warning on the packet.
These medical breakdowns are awesome. Very factual, very neutral and (especially in this case) free of judgement. I could listen to you speak on trauma cases all night. Also, I'm starting to be able to decipher some of the medical terminology thanks to your word etymology breakdowns. Love it!
JOSE OCAMPO Because hearing, i.e, "kid eating tide pod" just makes me think instant darwinism, but hearing the physical outcome of such an activity in-depth reminds you that this is someone who's suffered from it. This is a human being, no matter how stupid they may be for doing this, you can't help but feel sorry/sympathetic after hearing what this person suffered.
I started doing it in real life and people look at me really weird but it has helped me learn the roots of words and figure them out without actually knowing the official definition
I like this guy, he explains everything easily and concretely so that everyone who doesn't have any knowledge whatsoever would understand every word that he says.
It was ment as a meme that you act like you wanna eat them. But ofcourse people these days take it to another level ( or just dont know what a joke is)
It's because talking about death has become taboo. Imagine a world where people don't grow their food or hunt for their food? Imagine a world where people can be in complete denial about evolution, death and tragedy because it is more conformtable. Imagine a world where people call a newly spreading virus a hoax because the truth about nature and life makes them unhappy.

If his Mother had not been around and getting him help, he might not have made it. Sometimes you present these cases, I swear, they sound like a goner and then they survive. Amazing.
why did the poison control center say all he needed was water lmfao
