This is my girl. She becomes a statute with gentle lead. Hides when she sees the slip lead. Treats do nothing. She will choke herself with any collar or leash. Lol. Smart, stubborn dobie. Every day I look forward to these videos for these nuggets of training. Thank you!

'Butt flip', getting dog sideways, reversing 'flop-down', all helpful. Mine, 13month Lab mix, flops onto her back like that to avoid getting back into the car. No way I can lift, or even budge, what feels like a 50-lb bag of jello.

Orca question: Did you know a guy named Chuck Thompkins in Orlando?
Noticed you have been working with some problem Aussies. They become quite complainant if you lean a good sized stick along a wall of the place you are working. You don't need to touch the stick but Aussies always get the message, 'we ain't playing'. That is a trick working Aussie trainers always use.

I just want to say that I so appreciated you going over the "pop" being "down and to the side"!!! Those distinctions in the application of this technique and the reasoning are so important in my opinion. Your technique has been such a game changer. It's a great technique that I have observed being unfortunately misinterpreted. Thanks again for pointing out how to correctly do it. I also appreciate how that same technique, tailored to each individual dog (size, personality, etc), just works beautifully. Thank you!!!
It is absolutely not about cutting off air flow, hurting a dog, or injuring its neck or trachea.

He is not neutered and extremely reactive, fearful stage, dominant...all that crazy chaotic stuff...this video is very helpful to my dog and i. Its had to control on both sides this video helps us and the method saves me from pain and loosing balance while he is looking his mind

I am beyond grateful for these videos. Seriously. I can't believe they're free. My pitmix is 2 according to the vet (he wandered into my yard earlier in the year) and he is really bad about pulling/jumping (among other things). I've been trying to get a handle on it. Apparently, the other videos I've been following make him think I'm rough playing with him because he doubles his efforts to 'win' when I try to correct him for jumping and scratching me (like shoving him off, making him sit/lay, holding him away from me by his collar/harness). He's now started nipping at me very lightly, which is concerning because I know how quickly that can escelate and how bad it already is. So... I'm getting here in hopes of finding a method of correction that he can understand. I think I've been miscommunicating with him all this time. Watched the video on this channel about how to get young adult dogs to stop jumping and nipping, and now I'm here to see how you hold the collar. Hoping this works. Going to be very careful to follow this video and the other ones to the best of my ability. Thank you for helping us unexperienced dog owners! You're a gift to every dog whose ownder finds your channel!
Note: I feel it necessary to mention he's usually at his worst when he misses out on exercise. I'm working out a more consistent routine where he's out and about more and running around . He currently gets daily walks for around an hour or so (sometimes more), and fetch 3-5 times a week, and we also have regular tug wars, but that routine gets old I'm sure. I know dog parks (or just contact with other dogs) is one of the best ways to tire him out, but he has some reservations about other dogs that I need to sort (either myself or with a trainer), and the nearest dog park is 45 minutes away and fuel isn't cheap, so I'm trying to figure out something there. I think he can get to a place where he's more manageable. It's mostly just about me learning how to communicate with him and making sure his needs are met. I wish I had found this channel back in August. So informative and helpful. It's given me a lot of hope.

This dog seems pretty friendly, and waiting it out sounds great. I had a rescue Boston Terrier that did the submissive roll and I thought I'm done (even though I knew better to touch them in that position), grabbed the collar to get them up, and the dog snapped up and down both sides of my arm. So be careful. Waiting it out would have been better. Having a house line on with no loop on the handle would have been better. Love the one comment someone had on here about just walking away and the dog never did that submissive roll again. Awesome!

A tip I found out learning this method: don't release the dog before they're calm. You may correct them, and they can (start to) understand what they did wrong, but play can have them riled up too much, and releasing them too soon sets them up for failure. It's not a disaster, but it's not exactly ideal either.

My dog did that once, I dropped the leech and just went on my way. She never did it again and followed me 100% ever since, that moment I just never called my dog again to make her watch me.
I'm helping my neighbor with her dog that pretends she doesn't exist sometimes.
I know how to correct realy bad behavior but I'm not experienced with an untrained dog (9 months).
The dog listens to me without questioning but pretends to not hear her, for me it's hard to explain how I do it, it comes natural for me to be the dominant one.
I'm just doing my best by following your methods and so far the results are good, just did one session when the dog doesn't come, walk backwards and call again and it works great.
I let her order a 20 meter leech and a better gentle leader so we can also practice in the wild. 😉

Ok. That's it, I'm trying the Butt-touch on my fixated, dog-obsessed, dog! Hadn't really seen it before, but he's a puller, too, like this one. I'm doing the down-and-to-the-side, but it's slow going with him, he's an out-front Mini Schnauzer. He's young, only 14 months, but he just got fixed, and we think it's helping. 🙂 Enjoy the Superbowl!

This is a little off topic, but I have a great pyrenees. We go hiking and walking all the time.(on trails that are on leash trails) Hes always leashed and heels perfectly. We run into a lot of off leash dogs with poor recall and more often than not they act like they have little man syndrome. Even though they might be a normal size dog (black lab size) , it seems that because my dog is bigger they run up wanting to fight like this terrier. He has never growled or bared his teeth at them but I guess my question is, if a fight actually ensues, and the other dog is off leash, how do you stop it? I always tell myself, if something happens with an off leash dog, I need to just let my dog do his thing and put them in their place. I worry that he could do damage if the other doesnt relent. Do we just assume the other will? If theres a video you've done about this then suggest that but if not maybe you could make a new video about this sort of thing?

(There have been several times where he was 100% good/calm and even met another dog very nicely🐾❤️) Anyway, I tried the butt-flip and YOWCH! It really hurt my fingers. Cuz it's 4 straight fingers? Next time try using my thumb, too? What about using the heel of the hand instead? Or maybe I didn't pop the leash hard enough in conjunction with the butt flip? We rescued a 2 year old male neutered (neutered November of 2021) pitbull mix on January 3rd of this year. He’s honestly a good boy. And he wants to be a good boy. We have a few issues on which I’d love your professional opinion. When we rescued him, we were told he was animal friendly and through experience, we’ve come to not trust that. The description also said he’s human friendly. We haven’t had any bites or anything, but whenever someone new comes around, the hair on the back of his neck goes straight up and he barks. His bark is scares people, and understandably so. It makes me nervous though - I still don’t know his personality thoroughly. Our other situation is that he gets excited to play and he nips. But, because he’s bigger, it’s a bigger nip.
My question is: where should we start our focused training? Do we walk him with a muzzle and work on leash training? Will he be too distracted by everything? How and when do we focus on the play situation? This dog (named Lincoln) has stolen my heart, but I get nervous pretty quickly if I don’t have him in my sight all the time.
We have a kennel and put him in there with quality chew toys and rewards while people are over.
Anyway, lots to ask but would love your thoughts, if you have time.
I absolutely love your channel. You are truly gifted and it’s a blessing to learn from you. Thank you for all you do - and for making it available to us, no matter where we are.
    Take good care!

That sounds like a whole bunch of things going on that might be better with either finding a trainer in your area, or doing a phone session with Beckman's (go to the website for that info). Can you get back in touch with the rescue you got Lincoln from and see if they can help with a trainer? He may need more time to get more comfortable in the new situation and is still building trust with you. I definitely think working on regular training with him, structured fun activities with him to build the relationship with you is a good place to start, but you might need more than what you might get here in the comments section! Good luck, thanks for rescuing and I hope it's mostly because he is still adjusting to his new life!

    • @robinrutherfordcost4748
      @robinrutherfordcost4748 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Suzanne Clothier's Automatic Check In should help so he's focused on you. Joel does the shaking of the stranger's hand or fist bump with people in the circle of trust so the dog sees that person is ok. Sounds like you have to step up and take charge so the dog doesn't feel like they have to react. Can try getting the dog to stay in their bed when people come over. Have to build the value into staying in the bed. If you do use a muzzle, take a while (like a week practicing every day, getting him to stick his nose in it to lick the cream cheese or liverwurst while you hold it. You're not buckling it on him for like 3 days of practicing just that in different locations, then not removing it when he fights it - get it off before he starts trying to get it off) to condition it so they like it. My Dobes love their muzzles. The one Dobe actually feels safer with it on and then you can relax too and the dog can go say Hi to their friend with the muzzle on. Definitely talk to the rescue and get a trainer or zoom session with Joel. It's not a great thing if you're getting nervous. Sometimes rescues go based on what the owners told them, but rescuing dogs for years, people sometimes lie unfortunately.

I have an eight turning nine months Irish cream retriever, and he did exactly that. He loves grabbing stick and chew to his heart content while I stand there like an idiot waiting for him. If I pull it away from him, he'll jump and snatch back obviously, but also including my hand or arm or whatever his shark teeth has a hold on, and sometimes he'll turn it into a game of tug with my hand or arm in it. And just like in the video, mine wanna sniff almost every dog and eagerly wanting to play in the middle of our walk. If the other shows no interest, he'll get frustrated and turn to bite the leash, tug it, or nip my hand (possibly redirect his frustration on me). But he's getting better, now he jt makes a small grunt and turn to sniff every single stone, tree, and everything else. My problem is he likes to pull towards his desired direction, and if he's not getting to his way, he'll butt down then turn to lie on his side even if we were in the middle of the road. Does anybody has a quick solution to this? Greatly appreciated f9r any tips.
Side note, I walk my pup close to 2hr in the morning. Then we'll play fetch in the afternoon, then a 1 hr walk in the evening. He's good with everyone and loves to watch kids playing at the playground. He'll come and lie against me on my feet while I'm cooking or just simply standing by the window. He'll hold on to me and looks up at me when he's in an unfamilar environment. My problem is when he's on leash, I want him to know that I'm in charge, I decide the direction, when and where he can play, when and where he can't, and it's for his own safety. ( in my country, all dogs must be leashed in public at all times). Also he's very very and very mouthy and it hurts. Anyone experienced this, kindly give advice.

      @majadembinska5321 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Sounds like you need to work on adding a barrier to entry in front of everything your dog finds valuable. If he loves the sticks so much I would not just let him approach them when he feels like it while you are "standing there like an idiot". He should behave first, sit, wait for your permission to get the stick and only you can decide when the stick-party is finished. I would also make sure his "leave it" is rock solid. He is in his teenage phase, questioning your rules and boundaries that you tried to establish with him until now and from what you have written I think he might not see you as a leader or maybe you are using corrections that are not effective or more likely both. He should not be nipping you and you should be able to correct him before he lounges towards your arm to get to the stick. You have him on the leash afterall so use that to your advantage. Maybe practice with a stick at home, so there is less distractions. Talk to some friends that own dogs and arrange " passing a dog situation", low distraction environment that you can control first so nobody else would disturb you and make that friend's dog pass by you and your dog hundred times, 2 hours, even all day. Desensitize him, create a history of him being calm/bored when the other dogs are passing by. And correct him everytime he goes crazy, think what you would prefer him to do instead, maybe sit? Look at you? Touch your hand? Whatever. And then both dogs in motion when he has nailed the sit calmly thing. He will stop that crazyness just a question of when. I would use approaching and meeting that other dog as his reward IF he is calm. Well... that's how I would handle it If I were you.

And if you want to take away something that he is already chewing on try not to pull on it - as you have already noticed, that encourages him to play tug. Instead, grab the thing and hold it assertively, without moving it, make it boring, you can grab his collar with another hand so there is less chance of him starting the tug war by moving backwards and... wait. Have in your mind a thought "this is mine" and communicate that with your energy.
Not sure about a quick fix regarding that lying down move of his. I would outwait him I guess to show him that this gets him nowhere anyway.

@@majadembinska5321 Thank you so much for the tips! Maybe I'm not consistent enough as his leader. I'll try to do as you suggest and see how it goes. The amazing part abt my pup is that, he's never jumped on our bed cos we didn't allow him to. He's never ripped off our furniture or destroyed anything in the house, like ever. And he's ok with being alone while we're out, never pee poop in the house as he'll hold it until we get back. I think it's my mentality that I think he's such a good boy so I've been given him too much freedom outside.
Anyway, I'll follow your suggestion and see if I'm getting better in communicating with him🤞

My female dog does this when I go to put the collar on her... I don't know why as she loves the walk and I only put the collar on for a walk and her favourite thing in the world is a walk so I don't knowvwhy she doesn't put the 2 things together and love it going on. She has done it in every collar and harness for no apparent reason. It's now a habit. I just put the collar on her and ignore it. I go to the door for the walk and if she is silly enough to miss the walk then tough... so she cones out and stops hiding.

My dog is now 11 months old, 22kg and he sprints and lunges at every dog he sees, even when the other dog is showing aggression, it seems like he doesnt understand the other dog is being aggresive or something.
He's not aggressive and never was (purely innocent and wants to play), he just seems so overdrive when seeing other dogs, i've tried the leash correction and the collar correction with and without butt and none of it is working, he keeps sprinting like a maniac, rubbing his paws on the floor as if he was on a sprinting competition, without being able to move an inch while im holding him by the collar.
Nothing is working, not with yelling, leash or collar corrections. I'd like to point out this only happens with dogs, and im 100% certain its not aggression because hes been great once he reaches the dogs he wants to play with, i just dont want him losing all impulse control and being a psycho until he reaches the other dog. He's calm with people and reasonably trained, even though that all goes to trash once he sees dogs. Any ideas are appreciated

Joel's Rottweiler video on the leash method is like the cornerstone video. His recent one with the English Cream is awesome too. Basically if the dog isn't on your page, you're not going anywhere. Before you go for a walk, try running him in the back yard for 5 minutes, just to take the edge off. Joel also recommends calming ovals sometimes too. No off leash yet, especially around other dogs - he's not ready yet. 180 degree turns until he's on your page to meet the other dog. If he's already pulling, it's too late. I know Schnauzers can be a bit stubborn and sound worse than they are so in order to get what he wants, as soon as he starts, or just before, turn away from the other dog, once he's calm, try going towards the dog he wants to meet - provided you think he's a safe dog to meet and their owner is ok with it, good with other dogs, etc. Joel has some great older reactive dog videos where the dogs actually meet each other on the walk. Suzanne Clothier's Automatic Check In should help as well. I've also used No bark or the walk is over - your choice. You have to follow through that very first time though. Then they know you're serious and not crying wolf. Next walk when you say no bark or the walk is over, you can actually see them thinking about it. Do I want to continue on the walk or do I want to go home? For dogs barking in their own yard, will say no bark (to my dog), they're doing their job, that's their yard, you'd do the same thing if it was your yard. They whine once and we continue on the walk. Hope that helps.

Shock collars can create fear, anxiety and aggression in your dog toward you or other animals. While they may suppress unwanted behavior, they do not teach a dog what you would like them to do instead and therefore should not be used

Joel you made a video on guard dogs and you placed Rottweiler on no1 but you yourself have Doberman.
    1) Are Doberman better than Rottweiler?
    2) which guard dog breed would you suggest that have low exercise requirements, i am thinking to get a puppy but i am not super active person.
    Please reply.

I think it’s a breed thing. My English cream is OBSESSED with other dogs/cats. He NEEDS to interact with them. And he’s 9months and already a very good service dog in training. Still have to work on seeing dogs in public

No breed is perfect but omg the English cream is such a beautiful animal and the ones I've seen have such amazing personalities. Good luck with your training, I'm sure he'll grow into a fine service dog!

Watched the butt flip stuff closely. I try it on my dog to break her eye-lock on other dogs but she doesn't care. I'm probably doing it wrong.

I believe it is supposed to be a quick, kind of sharp, uncomfortable steering poke with a hold while your pokey fingers give a quick turning move at least a quarter turn, poking his butt away and out front of you. Does that make sense? The quick poke and moving his butt out front and around are the same simultaneously. I know what I mean, but am I making any sense?
