Woodturning - Domed Lattice Lidded Box

  • Woodturning - Domed Lattice Lidded Box.
    This is a project inspired by the book Woodturning Wizardry by Professional turner David Springett. The projects in the book vary from Lattice work to captive items within spheres and the projects also vary greatly in degree of difficulty. Mr Springett encourages turners to have a go at these projects even though some require a fair deal of preparation work by making various chucks and tools. This is my attempt at perhaps one of the simpler projects even though it needs several chucks and one homemade tool.
    The book is available from several places including Amazon, for anyone who fancies a challenge.

    Sometime while viewing your video my wife came into the room and asked me if I was alright. She said my mouth was wide open and I had a dumbfounded look on my face. I said .. "Hon, I only have a vague idea of what this guy is turning but I'm fascinated by all his re-chucking and multiple turning axis's"! Unfortunately we live in a highly technological and mechanized, (CNC ) world, where only another "Turner" will appreciate the difficulty and skill required to make this box. Turners usually turn items for sale or gifts. So, from this turner's standpoint I would attempt this for personal satisfaction only. This is because the return for such work can't be realized in dollars or appreciation for the skill required.
    Thank you for sharing your very difficult work.

      Thanks a lot for your comments and I hope you have a go yourself. As I say in the description, this is not my idea or design and the book this is taken from is available online. I would have found this much more difficult (if not impossible) without the templates and the instructions provided in the book.

      Stuart Scott,
      All the work is all part of the challenge and yes it is worth it. (Most of the time). I didn't show them as the video would be too long, but there were a couple of other fails before I got it right. One was too thin and another did not follow the template accurately enough but I got there eventually. Thank you for your kind comments.

    • @PeterWoodbineWoodturning
      @PeterWoodbineWoodturning  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Woodturning By ME,
      Glad you liked the project. The angles are defined by the templates shown in the book which you need to produce first and then match these to the chucks and the lid. The degree of cut to the angled chuck is also defined by a specific size and radius of the lid. I too have no idea how the author came up with these angles so I gave up trying. You may have noticed that on the final lid, I had to apply layers of tape to the angled chuck to correct the angle of cut on the outer rings, which shows how accurate all this needs to be. Thanks for the comment.

    Nicely done Peter, beautiful piece of woodturning. Considering your video is just under 20 minutes, you editing is exempliary for the work you carried out in finishing this project. What an adventure, excellent, good luck with the rest of the book. I'm still collecting wood and equipment to have a go on a few of the projects. What a marvelous insight to artistic turning 'Woodturning Wizardry' is too.
    If any woodturner has an inkling to step out of their comfort zone and test their drive - get the book and 'go for it'. Hat's off to David Springett too.
    Regards and best wishes Peter, until your next adventure, take care.

    I too have David’s book (which he signed for me when doing a club demonstration) and I have just completed the flatter, offset lattice projects and am now considering tackling this so it was fascinating to see your attempt in video - much easier than the book, brilliant though it is. I’ve also made many examples of the ‘Singapore Balls’ which are fun items that sell well at craft fairs but are a little too repetitive! If you haven’t already done one I would encourage you to have a go. 👍

    Wow, so refreshing to find a wood turner with confidence in his ability and his equipment, I'm a retired engineering centre lathe turner and I'm tired of watching woodturners whose first thought is to "put a tenon on it and get it into the chuck for safety" how are they going to develop as a craftsman with that mentality... sorry to go on, excellent job Sir, I've subbed you...Allen.

    • @PeterWoodbineWoodturning
      @PeterWoodbineWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I never was any good at geometry so I had to rely on the book. I think it's also reliant on you getting the shape of the dome perfectly formed, otherwise that can also change the angle. Thanks for the comment.

    Peter, your video perfectly compliments David book and has been VERY helpful in my attempt at this box. The box I must say is a bit of a challange and measureing to a half millimeter a must. Just had to redo my templates since they were off just a tad. Having some of the same issues you did and the one where you mentioned you needed to go in deeper on the inside of the lid with the gooves. The thickness of the lid is about 4 mm. Could you tell me in your corrected lid how deep you actually went. Going in 2 mm from each side is not a lot of wiggle room. Was thinking maybe 2.5 - 3 mm on the underside, but was not sure and that's why I ask. Thanks

    • @PeterWoodbineWoodturning
      @PeterWoodbineWoodturning  ปีที่แล้ว

      While its all a bit difficult to measure now, I think my lid is about 4.5mm thick and the underside grooves 2.5mm. I would say the underside definitely needs to be deeper than the top. Thanks for your interest and your comment. Glad the video helped. Always good to hear.

      @@PeterWoodbineWoodturning Peter, have to thank you once more for your help. After 3 blown lids your suggestion of going deeper on the underlid lattice worked great. Is the 35 degree for the last chuck based on the diameter of the domed part, or that angle works for different sizes? Is this all explained in the book, too, or they have put general guidelines in there? Great project, and interesting result. I have seen some nice modification on this topic, especially from Claude Lethiecq, and that guy took this to another dimension. Unfortunately, he is not with us anymore.

    • @PeterWoodbineWoodturning
      @PeterWoodbineWoodturning  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that the 35 degree is probably based on the diameter. The book includes 3 templates for the lid that you have to cut out and use to form the lid and to size the straight chuck. If you don't make these exact, the angle is off and the rings are not cut evenly. If you check out my video at the end of making the last lid, you will see that I added some blue tape to the chuck to correct the angle. Therefore to make any different diameter, I think it would be trial and error to achieve the correct angle. Whilst the book states that certain variations are possible, it gives no further guidance on how to achieve this. Thanks for your interest.
