- Cycling the world - Europe: 155 episode
In the fifth episode of my round-the-world bike tour in Algeria, I wake up at my wild camping spot with a wet tent due to overnight rain and colder-than-expected temperatures. As I hit the road, I’m invited by locals for lunch, experiencing incredible hospitality. After one more climb, I reach the start of the desert and am in awe of the stunning landscape. Finding a camping spot takes a bit longer, but the full moon and dry, warmish night make it worthwhile. The next day, after another lunch invitation, I’m stopped by the police and questioned for over an hour, resulting in an unexpected police escort. Instead of camping in the mountains of Bou Saada, I end up staying in a high-end hotel due to fully booked cheaper options on a busy Thursday night.

Ciao Davide, I wonder if the police was only there to ensure your safety?
In some regions, I have heard about that.
Such a great video again!
Hey Frank! They told me it was for my own safety. That's what they always tell you in these situations. Who knows what's the real reason is, most likely they dont want any problem in their territories which is understandable from one side but surely you're not really free if the police tails you around and prevent anyone to approach you as well as restricts your itinerary etc. There is a definition for that kind of safety: police state.
@@DavideTravelli that is absolutely correct!
@@DavideTravelli if you got lost or killed it would lead to diplomatic issues, of course they will want to keep you safe as many reckless tourists dive into trouble headfirst
@alboud it’s a diplomatic issue ONLY when the police, army, or intelligence agencies are responsible for harm, as seen in the tragic case of Giulio Regeni in Egypt. Thousands of tourists die every year worldwide, yet this hasn’t led to widespread implementation of police states. For example, many people drown at beaches, die climbing mountains, skiing, hiking, or engaging in other adventurous activities. However, most countries have not resorted to constant surveillance or heavy-handed policing as a solution. The approach of a police state, where tourists are followed and their movements restricted, undermines the essence of freedom and exploration that travel should embody.
Ultimately there is no safety if personal freedoms are compromised.
@@DavideTravelliwe apologise for what those motherfuckers did to you
As long as you are in Algeria you are under the responsibility of Algerian security so it is to protect you.
bullshit. they are there to monitor him.
bullshit.
because we rarely have random tourists deep inside algeria we try to protect the journey from border to border . welcome anytime
what kind of non sense is that?
@@ouail5387
Hahahaha, I'm Algerian and I totally agree with you, and for answering your question, it's called issaba logic, which means "(the gang of criminal generals leading Algeria)'s logic, and their dumb supporters that we call "Kavees" in Algeria, they're so stupid and criminal that you could never understand their actions or thinking.
i think they were afraid for your safety because the police asked you if you know the road. i mean the desert is dangerous even for us algerians and we had some cases of people di*d there because they were lost and dihydrated
What videos are you guys watching?!? Stop taking a few moments of Arabic dialogue out of context
19:46 i was talking about this moment. he asked you if you knew the road😅. and i am taking nothing out of context, i told wht i think because it happens to us too
You are in a large desert, my friend. There is an exciting situation due to the movement of sand, and on top of this, it is one of the richest deserts in nature, and it is protected by the army.
You walk to school your son when he is 4 or yearls old. When he 20 he can walk there on his own.
Algeria is surrounded by troubled countries and sometimes some of that can spill in. The police worries about safety of those who do not know enough about the area and are more vulnerable.
The police protected him from Algerian thieves who are everywhere not only in Algeria but also in France, Spain, Portugal...
It was a lie to tell you that the police were there to protect you from being lost in the desert, there were other tourists who were monitored by the Algerian police even inside the big cities like Oran and the capital and the proof you can find it on the latest video of a French man and another French woman on TH-cam.
That’s not the fucking way to protect a tourist who came to the country legally , those motherfuckers are afraid of everything
Thanks for your video. Wish you all the best in your life. And welcome back in great Algeria.
Thank you! You too!
The officer said: are you lost? Follow me i show you the exit (surely to a paved road or next town)
Algeria don't open widely tourism, that's why the cops protect tourists in isolation places, especially Sahara desert, in summer very hot, dangerous if lost in desert
If you have followed other adventurers trips around Algeria, you would know that starting from Ghardaïa or around the beginning of the Sahara and down south, police escort is mandatory due to security issues in all the neighboring countries.
Also, some foreigners managed to not be followed by being smart, avoiding usual roads, keeping a low profile and a bit of luck.
I didnt really look into others adventures, I tried to find some other bike travellers accounts but nobody ventured south. I was aware that the south is a special area because you need to require basically a different visa but none of the official information specify (Algerian government web sites) where the south starts. I thought Bou Saada was not that south.
@@DavideTravelli Indeed, Bou Saada isn't that south, we call it the gates of the Sahara and yes you were a bit unlucky, usually things start to get complicated around Ghardaïa.
I find horizons unlimited forum very informative, it is meant for Motorcycle Traveller but same would apply for you.
@cocothefly Yes I thought it was just a bit of bad luck or someone at the village called the gendarmerie. I would have liked to go a bit more south than Bou Saada but having the police tailing me was not really appealing and my visa was very short, realistically I could have gone south only one more day or two.
Thank you for the tip on the horizons unlimited forum, I'll bookmark it for the future.
hi men in Algeria be good and happy in Algeria. don't worry or squire police they see you and ask you if you good or have problems. Just they ask for your security ok
The police deal with all adventurers in this way, whether Algerian or foreign... Do not be bothered by them... They are just doing their job and this is in your interest... We wish you to spend the best time and welcome to Algeria. We are following you and enjoying watching
It was a lie to tell you that the police were there to protect you from being lost in the desert, there were other tourists who were monitored by the Algerian police even inside the big cities like Oran and the capital and the proof you can find it on the latest video of a French man and another French woman on TH-cam.
I visited it last year in Bou Saada. Go to a nearby area called Ain Al-Rish. Ask about the waterfall. It has a beautiful waterfall and few mountains that look like beautiful mountains
😊🙏
The Algerian gendarmerie dedicates substantial resources to keep foreigners safe. Any incident, like getting lost or attacked, could lead to a diplomatic issue with your country and negatively impact tourism and foreign investments. You’re not alone in this; many others, including employees of multinational companies, also receive escorts in the desert. We understand it’s annoying for someone who wants to wander in the sahara, but it’s the price you pay for your safety.
I get it, as you said it's annoying because you cannot experience the country.
I am from Oran, and last year I was working as a truck driver from Oran to Bou Saada, Djelfa, and M’Sila, and I know that you are people of goodness and hospitality to everyone who sees this person. You must help him, guide him, and welcome him with the best welcome.
waaaawww tooooop algéria🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿
Basically it's just to keep you safe and I hear that the Algerian police did save lots of tourist that were lost in the desert. I do enjoy your videos, All the best to you.

That's the official explanation, however given that there are hundreds of comments in my Algerian videos claiming I'm a spy perhaps they wanted to keep an eye on me. Second they didnt allow anyone to stop and talk to me, when anyone tried they sent them away. Third I wasnt free do go where I wanted to but they took me to the hotel and asked the hotel personnel to inform then whenever I was leaving the hotel. If I'm not able to travel freely in a country for me there is no point going there.
You seem to be a spy, and your face looks Jewish
No, no, my friend, the police are not so stupid that they know your intentions by reading the comments of viewers. Rather, the police accompany you in order to protect you from some negative young people.@@DavideTravelli

You think that the police are following you, but all they want is your safety as a tourist. Enjoy it, David, and do not think about bad things. You are not the first or the last that the police deal with like this, especially in the desert areas. They will leave you as soon as you are safe. Greetings, have a pleasant trip. I am one of your followers from Algeria.
Thank you for your greetings. I understand that but there is no need for the police to follow me, imposing the itinerary and where I spend the night and keeping away people from me. Imagine you go in vacation and you have police following you around? It is not normal, the fact that people in Algeria have normalised this kind of policing doesnt make it right.
@@DavideTravelli they gonna let you go solo don't worry i know you want to be solo and feel your experience with people that no problem i hope they gonna let you free just patience
Well done David you made it to Bousada, you need to come back with a longer visa to see the real desert , the gendarmerie are there for tourist safety I know it's not ideal but it is what it is all the best

Yeah, it's done. I would have liked to get a bit more south but the idea of having a police tail made me head to Oran from Bousaada. Cheers!

It is important that the police monitor you to protect you from theft or loss. In every country of knowledge there are bandits. That's why they're watching you. For your safety . Have a nice trip ✌
Finally, you have friends everywhere, and you manage do all what you want to do. But, let me tell you one thing, Bousaada is not the sahara, if you go further south and you camp outside, scorpions and snakes will make sure you will not go back to Italy alive, and police will be completely helpless hhhhhhh. @@DavideTravelli And why would you think that you wouldn't get some followers on the Algerian side aswell? You made a video in Algeria, of course you'd get lots of Algerian views
My country isn't used to have tourists, and the 1990s have instored alot of fear and doubt in people, so we're still trying to get used to handling tourism and tourists in general.
It happens to every tourist roaming the desert without an agency. Check out other TH-cam travelers who have been here
What type of camera?

What I've seen from others going thru Egypt was far worse than this. Had the Algerian police not have kept people from talking to you it would have been a minor annoyance, but their interference makes your journey far less interesting and personal, and that is just these paranoid governments worried about their image. In Egypt they often force you to ride in a truck or take a train to your next destination, far worse there anyway. Love your exploring these rugged locations. always fascinating, thanks as always Davide.
Yeah the gendarmerie in Algeria was very professional the only issue I have with them is that they didnt allow me to wander off and camp but also that they prevented people approaching me. If had the police tailing me al my entire journey I would never been able to talk to people, accept invitation for meals, riding on dirt roads and trails and most importantly camping. I understand it's done to reduce the risk of anything happening to me but it's not a nice way to travel, I am a careful traveller I minimize risks much more than most bike travellers I know.
I knew before entering the country that police tailing was a possibility in that case I would have left the country immediately the first week.
Yes the police in Egypt is bunch of very unprofessional babies, most of them are real idiots: they gave me back the passport in four pieces once. If you stand your grounds you can cycle the whole way. I got even cycle on the Aswan Dam which is usually forbidden.
24€ for a room like this one, and the Guy still Said that it is expensive 😏
It’s a shame that you watch a video and you don’t understand anything you watched. I’m sorry for you.
@@DavideTravelli I Can understand all that you Said, but it's a shame you don't accept criticism
You have not made a critic, you made a stupid statement: you said the room was not expencive. Which is a really stupid statement because it might be cheap if you hare rich but if you have only a few euros is very expencive. It''s all relative. I have been on the road since 2015 so if I had to pay 24€ for each and every night I would have spent over 65,000 Euro. Now do you still think it's cheap?!?
If you don't speak the language of the country you're visiting, you should at least have a translating app to facilitate the communications with the locals.

I agree police presence is very annoying, but actually it's their orders regarding any foreigner traveling in the south ... Basically, the Algerian officials doesn't want to call Georgia Meloni and tell her that an Italian national (called Davide) is caught by a terrorist group... Precautions, that's all...
You will agree that nobody would want to be travelling with the police following them and forbidding people speaking to them or forbidding where they can go.
Oh yeah, i agree… but Life is not always about What we like….

Just tell everyone Salam alikoum and wave 👋 to them you will be safe
The police offered to accompany you to show you the way. Otherwise it's normal to be stopped, the police do their job like all police officers around the world. Police officers monitor the roads to prevent Moroccan and sub-Saharan African drug traffickers from passing through Algeria. The Algerian authorities are doing an exceptional job to prevent their country from being invaded by drug traffickers, smugglers and migrants from neighboring countries. Without the Algerian police, Europe would be no longer under attack by migrants from sub-Saharan Africa. They do their job, and everything is fine if you follow the laws. It's the same as our police officers in Europe. In Italy or France, we have to comply with police identity checks, so in Algeria it's the same thing.
As I mentioned I have no problem going through police check points, showing my documents with police and answering their questions. I simply dont like to be followed around because it restricts my freedom and they dont allow people to approach and talk to me. If a country impose such policing on tourist I try to leave as soon as possible like when I was in Egypt for example.
You re welcome,,,

I have tried, I've shown them I am cycling around the world and crossed many deserts
The police man was asking you do u know the way and he thought your lost
The police man literally wanted to insure your security even Algerians can't go in the sahara alone 🇩🇿
I think it's just keeping you safe. But as James Bond I can imagine it's harder now to shoot pics of the secret Algerian cactus, with cops on your tail. As a superspy you just got to lay low for the while now! We spies salute you! 🫡 Hehe at some point they'll be done watching you I guess. Thanks for the upload! Amazing country 😊

My brother, always follow the road and do not walk in the desert. It is big, wide and dangerous if you see a light at night. It looks like a lamp or a car headlight, so do not follow it at night.
