@@majinvipergaming I like the Midea U-Shape, but not their mounting setup. It does seem like it's going to rust out, tho. I don't know if they just used thin, cheap paint or what on the outside. For the price it seemed like the best if you can catch a good sale.

The design changes are what really interest me the most. Not "losing" a window with the saddle design is amazing, and being able to essentially close the window with the U design sounds like it does wonders for reducing noise and air leakage. THAT'S the kind of innovation I can get behind

I always bought the name brands. I've had LG, AMANA, FRIGIDAIRE AND MORE. They all lasts a couple of years. 5 years ago I bought a brand called OCEAN BREEZE at my local supermarket. It's an 8000 btu unit, and outperforms all the others I've ever had. Made in China, but made well.

It will have to wait. My over 21 year old DANBY window mount air conditioner, is still working as good as new. I did have to add oil to the motors brass bearing felt pads at one point, since the oil had dried up completely and thus the motor was squealing big time. Plus I repainted the unit once, and so it just looks maybe 4 or so years old. The apartment windows slide sideways, so I did not need to add the air conditioners side panels for it to fit properly in the window. The window height was twice the height of the conditioner, and the side panels if bolted together were the same width as the air conditioner. So I used the bolted together side panels to fill the upper open window area located above the air conditioner. It fits like a glove, and it has withstood some record breaking storms. LOL.

I had the Soleus saddle window A/C - returned it. Wasn't wide enough for my double brick house built in 1960. Went with the Midea U shaped - 12k BTU, the 110v not the 220. No regrets. I have it in a room a little too large, but only using it at night to cut back on central air, so it works well for me. Also recently purchased two Windmill brand window AC units, both in 6,000 BTU and 8,000 BTU for smaller bedrooms. They're not U shaped but they're very nice looking, quiet, no air leakage, inverter tech, and quiet, shame they didn't review those as well - there is nothing else like them on the market.

Bought two smaller LG units for two small rooms rated for their stated cooling capacity. One unit never blew any air cooler than 71-72 degrees even at night and had a weak fan. The second slightly larger had a bent fan that hit the casing and it didn't cool any better.

I have central air but, still want MORE AC in one particular room. I just have a bit of hesitation installing an AC in a vinyl window, but plan to do so anyways. I kind of have an idea of maybe running a mini-split into this room if something exists without that massive wall unit? Why can't I have something like central air that uses the existing floor register to have this room climate controlled entirely on it's own with an AC sitting just outside? In the meantime, if a window AC can do the trick, I will be so happy.
Why on earth would you want the AC temp at 5:13 to increase temperature while you sleep? That is absolutely wrong. Every sleep expert will tell you that a cooler room assists better sleep, not a warmer room.

I bought 4 Midea U-shaped units (2 of them 2 yrs ago, and the other 2 a year ago). Initially, they were amazing. However, 3 of the 4 now make an ear-piercing high-pitched whine. It's absolutely maddening. Do you have tinnitus? It sounds like that, but much louder. I had to pull teeth to get Midea to replace one of them that failed a year ago. They kept having me send them audio recordings and responded, "it's within the acceptable dB range," but they would not acknowledge the high-pitched whine. I kept pressing to get to a supervisor, and finally got one who eventually gave in and they cut me a refund check as they didn't want to cover the expense to return a heavy defective unit.
Granted, these units start out fantastic and are very quiet, and have great features -- but over a relatively short period of time, quality is proven to be terrible (I'm just waiting for the 4th unit to start making noise any time now). So unfortunately, they've ended up being a waste of money for me, longterm.
I would not buy this product again due to the frustration it has created. 3 failed units out of 4 in a short period of time is a pretty good statistic to help you in your decision making process.

I wish someone would talk about if any of these damn units don’t rust out! As an owner of several properties as far as I’m concerned, they’re all shit because of the portion that sits in the exterior gets rained on and the casing as well as the internal components start rusting quickly
Also, some of them because of the metal drip pan, they rust through the drip pan all while spewing water on the side of your house to create mildew grossness, etc.

NONE win! The reason is they only last up to 3 years and that's if your lucky. That's why they only come with a one year warranty because they know they don't have confidence in their own products and are not engineered to last like the older units used to be.
I have used three window units in my home at the same time for around 20 years and we end up replacing ALL of them every two to three years most of the time their life is two years.
No matter what suit you buy today just remember you will more then likely be replacing it in the next couple of years unless you get very very lucky to have one that actually last longer which is not very often. You will make them last longer if they are not used all the time like anything else items last longer if not used.
I wish you luck what ever window you use and make sure to ALWAYS ALWAYS get the extended warranty because take my word for it, more then likely you will need it.

The problem with window air conditioners is that they draw power during the hottest part of the day, when electric rates are highest.
Electric Companies are nothing but Mafia stealing-machines. You should see the financial tricks pulled by LG&E in Louisville. They buy electricity at three cents per kilowatt hour, and then sell it to homeowners at twenty cents per kilowatt hour. Bear in mind that Electric Companies don’t generate electricity. That’s a different company. The name that appears on your electric bill is just a paperwork company. They don’t do anything but mark-up wholesale electricity from two cents to twenty cents. It’s robbery in broad daylight. On the East Coast, Mafia-infested states like New England buy power at two cents per KWH and then resell it at thirty cents per KWH. It’s paperwork fraud. And this enormous financial crime occurs under direct Federal control. Our entire country is being run by white collar criminals. And that’s why Washington has to be shut-down and replaced with small regional offices.
But until then, there’s a way to significantly reduce your home A/C electric bill. Buy a big chest freezer and put it outside your house under a window. Then fill the freezer with medium sized rocks which allow for plenty of air flow. Then drill a big hole in the lid for a regular box fan, and a small hole in the other end for a dryer vent tube. The freezer will run all night while electric rates are low. So then you put the dryer vent tube in through the window, and turn on the fan. You’ll get cool air at a sixty percent discount.

@@lonniemcclure4538 The interesting thing about electric rates in America is that there are no longer any public rate review boards. There used to be.
Consumers in America get fleeced by the Unions. The price of Gasoline, Food, Electricity, and Mass Transit should all be regulated by a Review Board. In capitalist countries, most products are marked-up forty percent. So if crude oil leaves the refinery at $2.00 a gallon, it should retail for $2.80 a gallon. But the Unions double or triple the price of everything they handle. And they threaten anyone who recommends a Public Review Board. Everyone is afraid of the Unions.

its not a government. its just everyday greedy people like you who dont wanna work a normal job. profit oriented money grabbers. whats sad is that everyone that complains about it would do the same thing if they had the opportunity to. most mens biggest goal is to quit their job and be rich. the only reason they dont is because they dont know how to, but if they could....
on another note, i think its justifiable to be rich if you give back a considerable amount of your earnings and not just to your immediate family. this could be done thru non profit organizations, donations, or just simply not overpricing everything you sell and barely making profit. also if you could just not spend your money on unnecessary things like a really expensive car. why buy a lambo when you can get around just fine in a camry or like? why buy a house so big that you never use rooms or clothes so expensive when you can wear normal clothes?
thanks for reading. just food for thought.
