The Wiz is a terrible and dreadful film. When I was in high school, they did a show of The Wiz and it was terrific. But the film is awful. It's way too faithful to the show and it goes on too long. The sets and the costumes maybe audacious and ambitious but It's an ugly film to look at. Some elements of the wizard of oz dont hold up very well. But it's still the better film.
John Badham, the director of Saturday Night Fever, was supposed to direct, but he thought Diana Ross was too old to play the part. Diana Ross threw her usual diva fit and got him canned. They brought in Sidney Lumet, known for serious dramas like 12 Angry Men and Network, to direct a light-hearted musical. He also was Lena Horne’s son-in-law, proof that nepotism has always been a thing in Hollywood. The result? Something that desperately needs to be rebooted
