    Hey. Really nice tutorial!
    At 27:31 you show how to calculate and use a distributed tie for the vertical reinf. But after that you actually design your tie with 4 legs instead of distributing the 134 kN on a couple of legs @200
    Anyway thanks

    • @SerhanGuner
      @SerhanGuner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point. We did two models here. Model 2 has one vertical tie that bundles all shear reinforcement. At 27:31, Rafael is showing a third modeling strategy where you distribute the shear reinforcement. This would be Model 3. You should determine whether Model 3 is needed for your beam. It will reduce the angles of struts and thus their utilization ratios. If you have no overloads in your struts, you don't probably need lower strut stresses and thus no need for Model 3. Realize that Model 3 will take more effort than Model 2. In short, you should judge your situation before proceeding from Model 1 to Model 2 to Model 3. I hope this helps. Thanks for the excellent presentation. It looks like the node region stress check was not discussed. Can you elaborate a bit on that? How important is the nodal region stress check if all the struct and ties checked ok?

    • @SerhanGuner
      @SerhanGuner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your interest. Nodal checks are one of the most important aspects of the STM and perhaps the most time-consuming task. A computer program like CAST can make it easier and faster. Rafael shows the results at the end of the video but there is no in-depth discussion on nodal checks in this video. I have a few other videos on the channel where I did nodal checks manually. Please check out other videos. Please consider subscribing our channel to both support us and get notified of new videos.

    Hi there,
    Awesome video, thanks a lot for that!
    A small question: Is it possible to create steel reinforcement with different strengths? In my model i have steel with a strength of 500 MPa, but i also have some high strength steel reinforcements with a strength of 1000 MPa. I can only find the option to change all my reinforcements strenght, can this be right?

    • @SerhanGuner
      @SerhanGuner  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can at different location. For the same location, you may take weighted average as SUM (area*fy)/total area.

    I construct beam column joint but i have problems when model goes to run , it gave me error due to unstabilty .. may you help me to solve this problem

    • @SerhanGuner
      @SerhanGuner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahmed, b-c joint modeling is another application of STM. You should be careful with developing a valid and efficient model. Best to look for published models from trustable sources. The instability error is most likely related to your support restraints. Ensure you have properly connected at least three restraints.

    Hocam iyi günler. 3.sınıf inşaat mühendisliği öğrencisiyim. Araştırma konum "strut and tie model" henüz betonarme dersi almadığım için daha rahat anlamamı sağlayacak herhangi bir makale ya da kaynak (ingilizce veya türkçe) önerebilir misiniz?

    • @SerhanGuner
      @SerhanGuner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Strut-and-tie method is typically covered in the textbooks of Reinforced Concrete Design. You may check out Prestressed Concrete Structures by Collins and Michell. It is an excellent resource to add into your library. Reinforced Concrete: Mechanics and Design by Wight and MacGregor. I don't think one can truly understand the STM without a decent understanding on reinforced concrete design, so you may wish to revisit all these once you complete the concrete design course. Good luck!

    I have a question: can we define the struts such that the width on top would be different than the bottom?

    • @SerhanGuner
      @SerhanGuner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, you can but when you are checking the strut capacity you should use the smallest width. What you suggest may be beneficial if there is an overload in one node while the strut capacity is sufficient. If you can use a larger width for that node, you may eliminate the overload.

      STM modeling is a world on its own and there are ample examples and information available. You may do a Google search on STM Modeling of beams, etc. to find pdf documents. I recall seeing an FHWA document with many examples. ACI related documents should have a beam with opening. Please remember to subscribe both to support our channel and get notified of any new videos.

    How different the STM modelling would be in a beam with compression reinforcement?

    • @SerhanGuner
      @SerhanGuner  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No difference for this beam since no struts are available at the top. For multiple point loads, there will be a compression strut at the top, and you may model it as a 'reinforced strut.' This will give more capacity to that strut. If that strut does not govern the analysis, no change will occur in the results whether to consider compression reinforcement or not.
