Ok, just to be clear on what transpired here.
This took place on a Sunday. I left the shop around 3 in the afternoon to see to a family comittment and after, our usual Sunday night live show.
I left the shop open for GARRETT and AUSTIN to do the work on Garrett's car. The HELPER was there to ASSIST THEM and then close up when they were finished.
Once I left, THE HELPER APPOINTED HIMSELF MECHANIC and took over,
He was NEVER GIVEN ANY AUTHORITY TO DO SO, and when I found out what had transpired the following morning, I had a VERY intense conversation with him.
Understand that I knew all about his "limitations" and because of his particular life situation, I decided to try and work with him and hopefully guide him towards his goal of becoming a mechanic.
I would not have, and could not have done anything differently.

Just an update for the comment section since I know Garrett personally, Garrett is going around town as I type this picking up the proper parts to get the Charger fixed. We’re gonna make a copper fuel line for it as soon as we figure out the routing after relocating the fuel inlet as well as seal up the oil leak and re-gasket the spacer. Hopefully by this afternoon Garrett will be much happier and we’ll be cruising to the track soon!

He learned all that from his father who was a machinist. As I help friends and take on odd jobs here and there I've come to find out that, unlike most viewers of a channel like this, most of the population doesn't have a clue how to perform service or make repairs. " Helper " turned off the air compressor and began his nightly shop vacuum and clean up. I bored #1, then #5, and got halfway down #3 when the air pressure dropped low enough to let the block float. In a split second, the block took a 45 degree turn, the cutter took a chunk out literally almost deep enough to hit the water jacket. It STOPPED the boring bar cold !

I see quite a few people that have a hard time with not cobbling stuff together when they're in a shop with time. Often people also struggle with taking the time to go back and fix the stuff that got cobbled together at the track or from when you didn't have time and/or parts. I've even worked with a couple of guys that would sometimes cobble stuff together on customer vehicles. Usually they did it thinking they're doing good by saving someone some money. In the end the customers usually end up angry since they lost time and money and the problem wasn't really fixed. It's not much fun to be fixing the same stuff over and over because it never gets fixed right.
It's also sometimes really hard for someone that doesn't know about cars to realize when someone isn't up to par. At least until things are so screwed up it's obvious. The tipping point I see would have been the duck tape. If you didn't know any better the carb spacer and no thread tape on the sensor might seem ok if you're trusting someone. But, wrapping some new hoses in duck tape like that should have been a stopping point.

I was at a local car customizer and mr customizer had to " send out " a simple carb to rebuilt. My dear husband could hardly contain his laughter at the thought. Now for special applications there is no crime in ordering a carb from Barry Grant or other specialist for your specific need. Stuff like this is why I started working on my own stuff to begin with. No one will ever care as much about your car as you do. No one is perfect, including me, but it just takes one hack artist to get you killed or stranded. I decided if I'm going to die because of bad work, it's going to be my own bad work. So far, 0 fatalities.

Meth heads usually take things apart and never put them back together. So the normal guys in the world who fix stuff only see parts in boxes. I had to take over an entire shop and 14 torn apart cars from a now dead meth head once. Before he died he didn't have the mental capacity to brush his teeth at that point. He couldn't haven't even done this well. This looks more like ASE test taker incompetent hackery than drugs.

As for the carb spacer, I like good quality studs that are extra long. If you are trying different spacer thicknesses you don't have to change studs untill you arrive at the spacer thickness that works best.

I literally took this man's advice and applied it to a 1972 Jeep J truck, had been sitting for years, long story short, new fuel tank, pump and lines, all new ignition EXCEPT the darn condenser. Fired it up and ran Great, for 10 minutes, then progressively got sicker and sicker. Sounded like dwell was off but metered at exactly 30°. Remembered his hint on poor quality condensers and swapped it out. BOOM! Perfect running AMC 360 key tap easy start up now!

As a regular car mechanic (not classic or performance), I hate old carbureted cars specifically because they *always* present with these kinds of problems. The half-assery, the botched repairs, wrong parts, duct tape, MacGyvering. I know it's not the cars' faults, yet that's always how they happen to be, so that's why I avoid working on them. The simplicity of these old cars is their downfall. Any idiot thinks they can work on them, and they do.

those plastic inline fuel filter break / crack / leak all the time, never run those, especially so above an exhaust header manifold. they are the cause to many engine bay fires.
