I've been running straight used ATF in my 7.3 obs since 2016. I'm also in Florida so viscosity is not really a problem. I've put well over 200k on the truck with 0 issues. I did swap injectors about halfway through due to them already being worn out before starting the ATF experiment. It's been harder to come by lately. I'm gonna see if I can start making bio diesel next. PowerStroke Tech tech talk with Arod did a video on my truck running atf as well.
How do you get it clean enough to run? I will run any oil but used transmission fluid I've never been able to get it clean enough to trust it to use and yes I have a centrifuge with used transmission fluid the only thing I've been able to do with it is run it through a Distillery process and turn it into pyrolysis diesel
@@tonydiesel3444 I literally just run it though a 6.7 Powerstroke 11-16 upper and lower filters and into my tank. I've done it like that since 2015ish. It works for me. I haven't had any problems with my injectors. I have about 100k on them. Normal 7.3 injectors will last around 100k to 150k with ok maintenance. I haven't noticed any indications of the injectors needing replaced yet. No misses or rough running concerns.
Thank you!! About 2 years ago now I re-geared the axles to 4.30s and put limited slips front and rear, little bit bigger turbo all to help some for towing. It's definitely a sweet truck now that it's also studded and deleted.
ive used straight crude oil in the past in my 7.3. it ran great but was hard to start in colder weather. only reason i nstopped using it was that the company put a gate up and i could no longer get to it
So i just had an idea for you..i dont run oil in my 7.3 but im going to..im going to put a 1/2 inch neyodinium magnet inside an inline hose to capture metal particulates that would otherwise clog filter..make sense?
It's different. I'm not exactly sure. I just filter the ATF really good and mix 50/50 with diesel. I've wanted to try waste oil but I believe its a lot more work refining it down and mixing with gasoline. Not sure if id want to risk trying that in my truck. Maybe if it was like an old 12v cummins or something.
@@BearDownOutdoors I've been thinking about doing this. First step is go around to shops and see if they are game or not. Has it been hard to find shops that are willing to let you drain their drum?
Don't bother with automotive filters on that tank, get yourself 10 inch house water filter. Just did that myself, hydronix brand, doest melt or swell. Best part: $7 1u filter cartridge. I pump a mix of wmo, used atf and gas through that
I run (in) 1 micron 10 inch filter - 17 goldenrod water block - 12 micron wix water separator (out). I run it a few times in circles at my transfer tank then straight into a 95 cummins ram tank. My last tank was 2.35 a gallon, that's in LA lol, and 14c a mile. My other car is hybrid ford fusion, it's mile is 2c more expensive
Hi from The land down under🇦🇺🇦🇺 what year model is your vehicle as I’m looking into doing this myself from my understanding you can only use Oil and chip shop Fat cooking oil for older vehicles I’ve got a vehicle V8GXL Toyota land cruiser as you do not have them in the states because they let out more carbon emissions has injectors because if you give me some pointers buddy thanks
This is a 2006 ford f250 with the 6.0L diesel. I also run this mixture in my 2001 Volkswagen jetty with the 1.9L diesel. From my understanding and trials, this only works in diesel engines that are low pressure systems. If it's a high pressure system it is more likely to clog/damage components. So do some research on your type of vehicle first to make sure it has a low pressure fuel system.
Do you think you could run filtered atf thru home heating systems? My sons and I purchased plans to build a home fractional distillation machine, but filtered ATF would save a lot of time.
Its still doing great!!! I moved across state so I dont have my normal source to get a lot of the trans fluid, but I'm still getting a little bit but its still working great!!
It should. Start of with like 10% atf 90% diesel and just slowly work up from there to make sure it likes it. Personally, I wouldn't go more than 50/50 but I've heard of people running almost straight atf. I have ran about 70% atf before and didn't have a problem but I like to be around 50/50
@@BearDownOutdoors Thank you for the reply. I am not sure if I am brave enough to run with untaxed fuel. I am looking however to see if I can find a supply for my oil furnace. I have been asking around but so far every place has companies that buy the old ATF so no one was interested in giving it to me.
A Centrifuge is the best way to do this. PA biodiesel supply has filter kits to convert a 55 gallon barrel in to a Centrifuge. They can filter more than 100 gallons an hour of atf, used oil or French fryer oil. Whatever u decide to use.
My balls ain't big enough to run that through my motor I even have a big centerfuse I ended up having thousands of gallons of automatic transmission fluid used that is and I distill it 720° Fahrenheit at cracking into diesel then I do an acid base reduction precipitation and I end up with orange clear diesel the correct specific density maybe $0.25 a gallon
Thank you for putting out this content. Running a 7.3 and 5.9 myself. Keep it up.

Rare truck being a 6.0 manual, let alone a lariat. Sweet ride!

Nice video.
Great video and super helpful
Do you think I could top up my j120 Toyota direct injection with some ATF
I don’t know if it’s high pressure or low
Thank you!! And I'm not real familiar with those engines so I'm not to sure to be honest.

Thats a good idea. Never thought about that!!
Centrifugal filtration is really the only way I would do this
Would this be same as running waste motor oil? Or is ATF unique in how it works in low pressure fuel system diesels? Thanks

@@BearDownOutdoors thx man
Anytime!!!
I know this video was a year ago but are you still running on the ATF or have you gone back and forth back on diesel and ATF?
Back and forth, I moved and don't have the hookups anymore for all the atf I was getting.

Automotive filters are only good for water separators

This fill up I'll try to use as little of diesel as possible cause now oil's mixed with regular gas and I use diesel kleen now

I'm not sure honestly. It. Might though. I know like the waste oil heaters for like garages and shops, it's fine. But I'm not sure about home heaters.
So this should work on a Yanmar diesel tractor ?
It should
Hey, how is that setup doing?

What about on a 2006 lbz duramax?
I don't think you can in a duramax.
I have a 02 7.3 power stroke what did u change to run atf ass fuel
I didnt change anything. I just filtered the ATF well before running it. And I change my fuel filters more often than normal scheduled maintenance.

Will it work on 5.9 Cummins diesel
12 values yes, I'm not 100% sure about 24 valves though.

That sounds pretty complicated. Do you end up with a waste byproduct after separation?
