You might have been able to make an adapter from RJ-11 to the n64 connector. Assuming the communication protocol they used is the same for both controllers.
The very first dual shock controllers for the ps1, also uses this kind of thumbsticks. Maybe someone can use this to make replicates for the n64 ? Or maybe i gonna do it myself..
One must wonder if launch games were affected by these changes at all, like if developers had tightened the gameplay around that more free-flowing stick, and then the one with the octagonal "well" comes out and changes the feel of the game.
Assuming that pin outs are compatible I could whip up a conversion plug for that. It appears to just be a standard 6p6c plug (the one we all incorrectly call RJ11) and at a glance appears to have the same number/color or wires as a modern controller. If that is the case it would be very simple to wire the adapter. Effectively it would be like the usb breakaways that were made for the Xbox.

I really would advice against casually using a one of a kind prototype controller for games, controller diagnostic programs would be better and more informative.
The way the actual ultra 64 controller looks is just like life as it was in the 90s, I was born in 93 and I have to say it definitely looks like times then in 93 where smoky black and a little grayish, but I’ve grown up and had my birthday in august on the 30th this year so I’m 27 years old now, and my childhood history can definitely speak up for the fact this console controller definitely was like what like for me was like then, when I was born, I had almos6 no memories at all of being a new born baby or at least 3 years old, I got to remember a lot of my life’s growing up future at 4, and times then as I was 4 where like for me in a sense the end of the dark ages as to when times were so much less colorful by lights yet because Thomas Edison had his lightbulb take 200 years just to help people understand how to make it, how to use it’s parts to find the discovery of more usage for to someday make technology of the future and I was that kind of kid who grew up thinking that the newer brighter fields would be blooming thanks to lights being brought into the earth a lot more further in the world then when times like segregation, ww2 happened, I’ve learned just how bright for lighting fixtures people housed to be able and have it, it to so many was very unfairly dark and dim for so long and only so many times a few new light fixtures would be added around the earth for changes made that’d light up the darkest parts of the earth. The Nintendo 64 was special to me in the sense that it didn’t look like an everyday ordinary commercial, it spoke to me in my thoughts and sleep so many times like it was saying to my kid thoughts back then that it would be a starting point for technology to someday have a futuristic blast off into the 21st century. It although wasn’t that big, it’s just, as a kid, it broke out of the world of ordinary and average behavior, it tore a rift into our universe trying to get a sense of inspiration out there for the everyday only so much entertained party of kids, cause back then wooden baseball bats and hand weaved baseballs as well as hand weaved baseball gloves were at the 90s one of the time some of the mostly ever done sports, the fun then, the eraser of boredom, there was a bit of slowness with that then, but when the Nintendo 64 came out, it opened a vortex with our universe causing a rift to filter the universe with a breaching into the world like affect, it destroyed the ordinary and very cheap “fun” that we had then imo.
Looking at those hybrid colours and everything makes me think that maybe they reused some of those ideas for the Switch design - very matt with a variety of shades.
Have you probed the lines on the prototype controller? Maybe it speaks the same protocol as a normal controller but just needs an adapter. A normal controller has Ground, VCC, and a data line.
If you want the smoothest n64 experience, get the gamecube style n64 joystick, you can find it online. You can even get a joystick grip for the wii nunchuck and put it on there.

They tried but it wasn’t recognized. It was made for use with the dev kit not retail system so it may work completely differently.
Seems like the prototype stick was only really good for games that didn't require precise accuracy or movement more for games that were essentially a digital movement in a 3D space than anything. I always thought the larger version would have been better when I seen they changed it. Finally I can see why they did.

Honestly I think the indents around the stick for most Nintendo controllers were the worst part of them. Something like a modern ps / Xbox controller is just way more precise compared to basically having 8 directions due to the stick's tendency to go right into one of the indents. Even using a Dreamcast or Saturn 3D controller is a huge improvement compared to the N64 stick

Someone should make a top for the current analogue stick that fits in the hole on the release version to secure it. As a kid I always wondered what the hole was for, in the end I put a mini screw in it to seal it up and to add grip and bling lol

Good video friend about the controls of the n64, but you scrubbed me on how to design a replica of an n64 controller, you should design some that have their vibrators included, since I have seen many replicas on Amazon that are from USB, but it is not compatible with the controller pak nor rumble pack, since it does not have the slot of the same, and why not include the vibrators in those controls to avoid using the rumble pack, a swich is placed there, to change vibrator mode, or change to mode controller pak or transfer pack

Why not just buy a female RJ11 jack, and another N64 controller and cut it's cable. Then create a simple adapter? Or are the protocols different? If they're different I doubt very much, and there's certainly no crypto, so building a protocol adapter would be pretty easy.

The dimple on the ultra joystick was put there so you had grip so your thumb wasn’t on the edge of it and was supposed to be more “comfortable”...

The u64 only seems to use 2 of the 3 wires. Regardless, what your suggesting was tried. Unfortunately didn't work.

Why not just buy a female RJ11 jack, and another N64 controller and cut it's cable. Then create a simple adapter? Or are the protocols different? If they're different I doubt very much, and there's certainly no crypto, so building a protocol adapter would be pretty easy.

The proto joystick looks way way better and durable.
But based on the test is far less accurate for precise movements so wouldn't be as good for most games
They should remake the n64 with better graphics and the same cartridges
