NEW Hood Support struts/shocks/springs...

Hood Supports, hood shocks, gas struts, gas springs - WHATEVER THEY CALL THEM!
2009 Saturn Vue - This hood has no hood rod, or prop rod. Ya know the thing to hold the hood UP while it open. Instead it uses 2 gas filled supports. These are great until they no longer work! (same concept for most rear hatches/gates on cars and SUVs)
Over time they wear out. There is a piston inside of them with a valve and over time and use it wears out. They are filled with gas gas and over time that could leak. Either way when that happens they no longer support the hood (or rear gate/hatch). Usually first notices in the cold temperatures.
They are easy to replace. Parts stores can get them all for you.

They have a ball and socket joint at each end. Most of them have a small clip on each end (socket) that hold them in place. NO need to remove the clip. Use a small flat head screw driver to slip between the clip and the end, pry the clip slightly away from the end and pull the support end away from the attachment point (ball). Do one end at a time. Before putting the new support on be sure to clean the old grease off the ball end of the joint. The new ones come with new grease on the inside socket. If they don't, just add a bit of general grease.
NOTE: Be sure to support the hood with something so it doesn't fall on you when replacing these.
If you didn't get the joke... J tool A9913 This is not a real tool. Mongo making fun of GM and their special tools. Mongo grabbed a cut up branch from an apple tree and used it to support the hood. But don't worry after seeing this GM will make it into a real GM-tool. But we all know it was a Mongo-tool first!
Hopefully this video help you if you ever need to replace the hood supports... or rear hatch supports on your Saturn Vue, or Chevy Captiva, or Trax, Yukon, Suburban or any vehicle that has them haha... cause the process is the exact same.
