Love your teaching style! Thank you! Total Newb when it comes to digital editing. I create with b&w film. Would these presets work with a b&w negs or more for converting color levels to shades of gray.
Thanks for the kind words. It is something I would certainly try with a B/W neg, and no reason why it shouldn't work. Let me know how you get on. Thanks again David
A recent begginer in Affinity Photo and find your style of tutorials easy to follow, any chance of a tutorial explaining use of layers and what they are used for sometime in future. Thanks again
David Frost with all of my videos I use Layers, New Live Filters and Adjustments as individual layers. I think it's a great suggestion to go back to basics and I will add that to the list :) Pleased you find the tutorials easy to follow. Cheers David
Wow, that is such a great tip! Thank you, have really been struggling in the transition from film to digital as I love black and white, but had more work than I liked with getting to a good result when converting RAW files.
Great to hear that you this technique caos one. It does give you a far better starting place for Black and White images doesn't it and saves you time :) Cheers David
Thats a great tip to make a b&w starting point preset. Thanks. Is there any way to get a pure black and white image in Affinity Photo, one without a hint of other colours? My finished results can often show a warm or cool cast, although very subtle. Thanks for any suggestions.
You're welcome @bourbon_sketcher, pleased that you enjoyed the video. As for the colour cast, that could be for a variety of reasons. It could be your monitor...the colour settings you are using. If you try using HSL adjustment and take the Sat. down to -100% does the cast still show? Hope this helps David
@@davro06 Hello David, since writing my comment, I thought about reducing the saturation under the HSL setting, to -100% and that did the trick. Its reassuring to know that that is your suggestion. Thank you for your reply 👍

Interesting! I added it to my B&W presets. Here's another one based on each colors perceived luminosity (to make color tv films look good on B&W TV:s in the old days). R 30%, Y 89%, G 59%, C 70%, B 11% and M 41%.
At last! Somebody has taken over my adjustment values for Affinity Photo to correctly convert a color image into a black and white. (As published by Affinity Revolution.) I had almost given up. 😊
Good question... with my own images, I always make changes in the Develop Persona (Raw) and then edit the image in the Photo Persona saving it in layers as a .afphoto file. The image used in the video is a stock image so it started off as an edited jpg file. Hope this helps David
Excellent tutorial David, those settings make all the difference.
Thanks Lazlo :), yes those settings are a good starting place for better Black and Whites. Cheers David
I never heard of this technique before. It's very effective!
Pleased to hear you found it effective, it makes a better start for B/W's doesn't it. Cheers David
Thanks you. Better preset than previous one I have been using - plus the other tweaks!
Great pleased to hear that you enjoy the preset. Cheers David

@@davro06 Yes, I do! It is slightly more contrasty than my suggestion.

Do you make these changes in the RAW file and then develop them to jpg, or did you first develop them to jpg and then make the changes to BW?
