I know many have heard of Bach and Vivaldi and the whole lot. I am just discovering Ristori. This guy is just as good. He draws melodic lines that are always perfect and perfectly pleasing, as far as I am concerned. And the transitions between phrases remind of the inimitable Pergolesi. The basso continuo is unusually vigorous and melodic, reminding one again of the always singing basso continuo of Pergolesi. Around 1750, the Italian mastery of the basso continuo was lost and the art of keeping a melody going supporting the main melody went mostly out the window depriving the ear of the great pleasure of following the basso as a separate melodic line. Now, it was just tititititi tatatata. This is a performance for the history books. More definitive proof that, as the eminent biographer of Ristori, Mengelberg, stated in his 1916 biography: "Italy is the mother of all music."
