The Legend, the man, the Myth; Fred Trueman. I met Mr Trueman in the early eighties during a charity match, I asked for his autograph during the luncheon interval and he said 'not now lad'. True Yorkshireman.
'Bannister enjoyed a close friendship with Dr Ali Bacher, the head of the South African Cricket Union during the apartheid era, and is said to have advised on which players might be interested in joining rebel tours to the exiled nation' (The Independent, 25 Jan 2016).
What I love about this is the whole time there’s this jolly brass band music playing in the back ground, it just makes this prank so enjoyable. Long live TMS and those wonderful contributors. These sounds of the summer will always bring joy whatever else is going on in the world.
Fantastic! Oh I miss those days of gentle humour. TMS played a massive part in my life, growing up with Messrs Boyle, CMJ, and the incomparable Brian Johnston. Thank you for posting.
What do you think Fred? I dont know. Jack? I agree with Fred. God I love cricket and all its silliness! The daft Dixieland jazz int he background makes it even more surreal...
Fred and Jack deserved an acting award here for keeping straight faces, both much missed as well as the incomparable Brian Johnston who set the whole thing up.
+NPA1001.....Jack [and Ellen] Bannister were our neighbours in Hasbury. Their daughter Elaine went to school with my sister. Lovely family and Jack is very sadly missed.
I was born in 46 and as long as I can remember I've loved Brian Johnstone and co commentary's just watched the clips and had such a laugh what an amazing man
brilliant. I have seen this so many times now but I still find it hilarious. the way the react when Aggers says that he slowed down is priceless. Fred blowing smoke in Aggers' face.....priceless. love it!
Brilliant! Just brilliant!! I'm a long-time fan of Aggers, love listening to him on ABC Grandstand when he comes out here for Ashes tours. Wish he was able to do more commentary here in Australia!
I've seen this 5 times in the last 24 hours and it gets funnier every time. It was classic when Fred said that Aggers family were so poor that they couldn't afford television and the health inspector came to their house.
bkatbamna you can see Aggers thinking it’s a wind up after about 90 seconds, but isn’t sure and keeps on going. He had done very little TV at that point and this was a big chance for him
Trueman and Bannister could have been a comedy double act. Whichever way, when you heard both of them commentate, it was just pure cricket. Both of them are sorely missed.
Love this windup and Trueman and Bannister were brilliant the way they kept straight faces while they are winding up Agnew , and the master of the windup Johnners was inevitably behind it like a naughty mischievous schoolboy...... Great times
The crunch comes at 5:45 with the look of disbelief on Aggers face from 5:57! He knows it's a definite wind up now but carries on regardless. Absolutely classic!
Every now and again, have to watch this again. To remind me of a Britain which once was. We were so lucky. Now we have to save something for our kids! Watched this, incidentally, when it first aired.
Sadly, it's an England that is fast disappearing in the rear view mirror. I miss those more gentle days of yore when we could laugh at ourselves. Now we're an Americanized, paranoid, PC mess.
Yes, it was wonderful. My grandfather had been captain of Darwen Cricket Club in the 1930's and later in the 1970's he would sit me down while TMS was on the wireless, talk about swing bowling and show me how they had shined the ball on one side. We would then have a game of Howzat. He would then practice handwriting with me, then we would go into the garden and do some work there (with TMS in the background). I was only a little toddler, but he had all the time in the world for me, there was no rush to do anything. Wonderful days and maybe not to be repeated.
Took about being over-dramatic! Cricket is still here. It is still being run by the establishment. Aggers is still commentating and posh public school boys are still playing the game.
1993? The year of the Jamie Bulger and Stephen Lawrence murders. Multiple IRA bombings. Just after the Charles and Diana separation. Economy in recession. 10% unemployed. Take the rose tinted glasses off.
Brilliant, absolutely dead pan right to the end when Jack says this sort of interview should spark somebody off and Fred replies well it ought to do, it's genius comic timing. Couldn't have played it any better 😂
Hilarious. After reading about this set up in one of Aggers' books it is all the better for seeing it. Being born in South Yorks to see Fred in full flow is wonderful. He never received the credit he was due. Maybe a rough diamond but what a bowler. Well done Aggers for posting this.
Bless Aggers here. In the early 80's he bowled high 80's. Not rockets, but quick enough to be considered fast. Saw him in a Leicestershire V Worcestershire match where he did a Mark Wood and get a bouncer over the keepers head one bounce for 4. Keeper was stood a good pitch length back as well.
@Mark Richardson You cryptically replied 'What?' on my comment - I don't know what you mean, so just replied in kind and then you start throwing insults around. What a weird guy.
mega bucks tv ie sky and mega strict diciplinary laws deystroyed cricket took the soul out of it ,just as they did football ,rugby, darts, motor racing etc
Trueman on fine form there. And Bannister played the straight man perfectly. Morcambe and Wise eat your heart out!!! Hilarious...... "You slowed down...? Never knew you speeded up..."!!!!!!
Lovely chap was Jack Bannister, my dad knew him quite well , he arranged a trial for me in the early ,60,s at Warwickshires ground (I was a fast but rather wayward bowler) Jack wasn,t too impressed ,cause i heard no more , but i remember his encouraging words .😄
You're a good sport posting this Aggers. Absolutely classic stuff.....Fred never loses it, not once. Jack manages to hold it in courtesy of a few pauses & looking at Fred to avoid giving the game away......but I fear you, were completely 'had' until the end!!!
The Legend, the man, the Myth; Fred Trueman. I met Mr Trueman in the early eighties during a charity match, I asked for his autograph during the luncheon interval and he said 'not now lad'. True Yorkshireman.
A true British icon. God bless Fiery Fred. Love the line "you slowed down? Didn't know you speeded up!" Fantastic.
ha ha, yes great line.
Aggers used to be genuinely quick, but slowed down and became more effective.
Genius right there.
Great line 😂
Jack Bannistets voice really brings back memories of watching cricket
Have a look at DM Mordecai's TH-cam channel for new uploads of 1990s cricket highlights featuring Jack Bannister.
'Bannister enjoyed a close friendship with Dr Ali Bacher, the head of the South African Cricket Union during the apartheid era, and is said to have advised on which players might be interested in joining rebel tours to the exiled nation' (The Independent, 25 Jan 2016).
I'm.the same..loved his voice
Anyone here after the boycott wind up?
That was hilarious!
_"You Muppet!"_
That was 4 months ago? Holy shit. Feels like a month.
Wonder If Geoffrey Watched This After!!!!
no i saw this before, both brilliant.
Yup!
But I don't know if thats the real answer.
Anyone?
What I love about this is the whole time there’s this jolly brass band music playing in the back ground, it just makes this prank so enjoyable. Long live TMS and those wonderful contributors. These sounds of the summer will always bring joy whatever else is going on in the world.
I noticed that too, perfect! And well said regarding TMS.
Yes!
Fantastic! Oh I miss those days of gentle humour. TMS played a massive part in my life, growing up with Messrs Boyle, CMJ, and the incomparable Brian Johnston. Thank you for posting.
I was there for this! Dear Jonners loved every second of it!the perfect set up!!
You were a great commentator too Neville,or as Johnners had you,Dr.No😂
"He runs up faster than he bowls ! " - Brilliant, from Fred.
lol
He wasn't wrong either.lol
What do you think Fred?
I dont know.
Jack?
I agree with Fred.
God I love cricket and all its silliness! The daft Dixieland jazz int he background makes it even more surreal...
Trueman would have made millions at poker on this performance. Hillarious and a treat for every cricket loving fan.
Absolutely!
What a classic! Tremendous self-control by Jack and Fred. Can watch this time and time again.
Fred and Jack deserved an acting award here for keeping straight faces, both much missed as well as the incomparable Brian Johnston who set the whole thing up.
You are absolutley spot on :-) :-)
+NPA1001.....Jack [and Ellen] Bannister were our neighbours in Hasbury. Their daughter Elaine went to school with my sister. Lovely family and Jack is very sadly missed.
Fred is superb here, always reigning it in when it threatens to go too far then going off on one again. A masterpiece
7:25 onwards- bowlers name please LOL
I was born in 46 and as long as I can remember I've loved Brian Johnstone and co commentary's just watched the clips and had such a laugh what an amazing man
Me too.. wonderful days,
1950 Sheffield, got Fred's autograph at Parkhead CG.
Brilliant! So well done by Fred and Jack. Aggers' valiant effort to hold an awkward situation together was epic.
brilliant. I have seen this so many times now but I still find it hilarious. the way the react when Aggers says that he slowed down is priceless. Fred blowing smoke in Aggers' face.....priceless. love it!

So bloody funny, Fred Truman, legend and greetings from Australia

This is pure comedy Gold,
the Salmon got me....
Hillarious
Trueman and Bannister could have been a comedy double act. Whichever way, when you heard both of them commentate, it was just pure cricket. Both of them are sorely missed.
When Fred blows smoke in Aggers' face... perfect comedy timing.
6:53 when Fred pulls out the stogie, and pops it in his mouth, Aggers stops still as if to say - "youre not going to smoke that are you?"
Love this windup and Trueman and Bannister were brilliant the way they kept straight faces while they are winding up Agnew , and the master of the windup Johnners was inevitably behind it like a naughty mischievous schoolboy...... Great times
Absolutely fabulous content. Fiery Fred at his very erudite best. Loved his Agnew family analogy 😂
Absolutely brilliant how Jack and Fred kept a straight face I will never know.
The crunch comes at 5:45 with the look of disbelief on Aggers face from 5:57! He knows it's a definite wind up now but carries on regardless. Absolutely classic!
Mark Richardson he suspects about 90 seconds in, but isn’t sure..... it’s a masterpiece this
That was better than the 'leg over'... & that was funny. Well done all three & RIP Jack Bannister.
This is brilliant. I love TMS. No matter how awful the world gets, all is ok if there is TMS.
A salmon jumped out the wall and grabbed a piece of lettuce. Brilliant

The Music in the background is coincidentally perfect 🤣
Fred with tie dangling everywhere and totally dishelleved hair and cigar :)
Brilliant, absolutely dead pan right to the end when Jack says this sort of interview should spark somebody off and Fred replies well it ought to do, it's genius comic timing. Couldn't have played it any better 😂
i'm just back for the 10th time in a year, brilliant.
Just one of my go-to vids when I'm glum. Excellent 😂
Fred Trueman, an Absolute LEGEND !!!
Hilarious and how Jack and Fred kept a straight face I will never know.
"You bastard"
never was a phrase uttered with such passion😂😂😂
Incomparable in its conception and execution, as evidenced by Aggers’ reaction at the end. Great telly.
Just wonderful. RIP Jack.
Hilarious.

A gentle insidious roast. A perfect delivery.
I'd never seen this before, this is brilliant.
8:34-Fred's "That desperate" comment cracks me up everytime, superb !...as are JB's terse and trite interjections.
You slowed down? I didn't know you'd speeded up. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha, the whole thing's brilliant.
I know it's a spoof interview but I could listen to these two for a lot lot longer. RIP Fred and Jack :(
I'll talk to you about the damp course next week ha ha ha, this is just bloody brilliant.
On top of everything else, the 'Morecambe and Wise' style cheek slaps at the end... outstanding. I now must have something in my eye...
Here after the boycott one , this was absolutely brilliant
RIP Jack and you too Fred
jacks dead?
he died on 23 january. the same day my sister was born in 1991
The music in the background is perfect
This is a brilliant wind up to the tune of Dixie jazz. How did they arrange that!
I was half expecting Noel Edmonds to walk out with a Gotcha at the end of that.
The music in the background, It's almost as if it was deliberately chosen for the occasion.
I’ve lost count now how many times I’ve watched this but it get funnier every time.
When the cigar smoke passes aggers face, perfect. So funny

RIP Jack Bannister (1930-2016)
RIP Freddie Trueman (1931-2006).
This is fantastic. Fred lights up a cigar halfway through!
If Wikipedia is to be believed and the date on this video is correct, Agnew was 32 or 33 here. Wow. Tough paper round.
@Mark Richardson What?
@Mark Richardson Oddly aggressive man that can't communicate.
@Mark Richardson You cryptically replied 'What?' on my comment - I don't know what you mean, so just replied in kind and then you start throwing insults around. What a weird guy.

Fred blowing smoke from his cigar, brilliant!
How prophetic that Jonathan Agnew & Fred @ 8.16mins predict that England gets a genuine fast bowler from the West Indies
After just 26 years of struggle lol. Albeit Simon Jones, Devon Malcom and Harmison were pretty lively sometimes.
'Many a true word spoken in jest'.
Theres a reason proverbs become proverbial.
Frederick chilling with a cigar on live TV. Another universe. A better world. Don't care.
Good old days Trueman with his cigar and such cutting comments dearly missed
Forget about the interview, with all that makeup on I'll kiss him - hahahahahaha
Love how that cigar smoke was wafting in Agger's face every so often......
A couple of great blokes, Freddie and Jack.
Brilliant, cant stop laughing .Great days.Miss them.
Trueman: "go to the West Indies". A man ahead of his time.
Is that how they found Archer?
How can anyone dislike this!

haha, this comment is three years old and it's totally relevant now AP is back....
Fred was a comedy genius as well as a cricket genius 😀
I never tire of watching this.
