Where I live it's illegal to cut on trees on the water. That is why gator is mad at you.
In years of kayak fishing i finally had one come up to my kayak while fishing in dulac a month or so ago. Had to give him a snout bop with my paddle. I think people had been feeding him because he was so bold. He wasnt huge either. Maybe 4 or 5 ft.

Seems pretty ballsy to just go to hacking the shit out of a live tree in a river bank riparian area. What if everybody just started cutting trees down indiscriminately?
