  • Too much time on the interstate will give you a very unrealistic picture of what our beautiful country looks like. If you don’t have time to take a look for yourself then come along with us and we will show it to you!

In my youth took a cross country train ride. I’m from NYC and the scenery just blew me away. I vowed to myself to someday visit those places I passed out West. Later in life had the amazing opportunities to travel and vacation out West. It was a life changer for me. Our country is beautiful.

I live only about 45 minutes from Bunker Hill. Thanks for showcasing our area. I have a goal to get to every Kansas town that ever existed so I have been fortunate to see many parts of our great state, so we welcome you to God's Country, Western Kansas! I have been to 1,322 towns/townsites in Kansas. Some of which have nothing left now, other still have remains, while others are still prospering towns such as Bunker Hill.

Hi John, Dennis here from Australia. My wife and I found this so interesting. When your video started, we thought that this place was in Australia! There are similarities with the inland state of New South Wales, which we have travelled through many, many times. We never see this side of the US in Australia. We also love these out of the way towns, where you can meet the 'real folk'! Thanks for the video.

Living and working in small town Iowa, you forget that a large group of people do not ever see rural life in America. The peace, the community closeness, and the relaxation of walking out your door and seeing the beauty of the countryside in its mostly natural state. Whether you have a big house or a tiny house you are grateful for being aloud to share in God's awesome work. Thank you for sharing and appreciating the small communities.

John and Alisha, Thank You so Very Much for sharing your journey through small town America. It takes one to appreciate the truly grand history this country has to offer. Off the beaten path is exactly what it is. Hopefully, in the not too distant future hubby and I will also be taking the Grand Tour of the Real America in an RV we're saving up to purchase. To be able to live life by experiencing it. Yes, it's a lifestyle that some scratch thier heads at but it's an experience we appreciate! Stay Safe and keep on bringing us your journey through life. Cheers!

I remember before Interstate 24 came through Kentucky. There were mom & pop shops everywhere. The country was still flourishing back then. Gas station attendants still checked your oil. No Walmart’s. Stuckey’s. Sunday supper at grandmas after church. Party lines. 3 channels on TV. I miss it.

If you ever travel again through the Midwest and have a chance to swing through the southwest part of Missouri they have tons of these small towns. Downtown Billings,&. Downtown auroa Mo just to name a few. That have that old time feel as well as Joplin but I wouldn’t considered it small town lol. Lots of history as well! Anyway cheers hope all is well!! Love that you enjoy traveling off the beaten path, John! My kids purchased a video of you wishing me a happy birthday right after a serious surgery, last May. There was nothing that could have given me more joy & a big smile than that video that meant so much to me. It came at just the right time to encourage me. I am doing better after surgery & radiation. It was kind of you to show concern & compassion for one of your biggest fans. Speaking of off the beaten path, If you’d ever like to visit Moonshine Store in Illinois, my husband & I would love to buy you a moonburger. Moonshine is an old general store with a grill that serves world famous hamburgers. It’s very primitive & located in the middle of farm country. Thank you, John!

Love to read maps,as you find out of the way places, and very odd names! One reason,I loved the Dukes,is how, when push came to shove, everybody got into the act! Neighbors helping Neighbors! Thanks John. Great video. Brings back memories of my childhood. Lived many years in Kansas.
Now I'm in Alaska. Wouldn't go back for anything. But I appreciate the reminder.

I gotta get back to packing thank you I needed that. Stay safe & you all are always in my thoughts and prayers. 🙏

Back in '95, I made the decision to leave "civilization" (DC suburbs) and head for the hills,
in my case east TN. Both sides of my family are from this region, so even though I grew up
and lived in urban areas from childhood on, this part of the country just felt natural to me.
27 years later, there's no doubt the move saved my life; it sure saved my soul.
John, as usual, is *spot on* here - if you haven't ventured out here to "flyover country" much,
    you should!
    Thanks as always John.

East Tn (where I'm at too) seem crowed to me. In the past year we have seen an explosion of new homes and sub-divisions. The homes are built very close to one another. The wildlife really felt the pinch (the green-ways gone!). The infrastructure (roads etc.) hasn't changed. What was a back road is now impossible to exit onto. Road rage once unknown here is now all the rage. Many of the folks relocating here are from places the self imploded (LA, NYC) and other democrat strong holds. Change is coming and it is not good. When the grass is greener on the other side of the fence them migrate - this has always been my experience. This hate I have for people seeing what you have and building all around you began a age 10 back in the 60s. My dad, brothers and friends built our first cabin and no one was insight - at least until we finished our cabin. Wasn't long before we were actually shot at in order to be pushed out. People suck.

@@1kbs11 Well, that's quite the generalized statement right there. If you're actually in ETN, first thing you know is that the vast majority of it is rural - VERY rural.
We have only three halfway-decent sized urban areas (the "tri-cities") - other than that, it's a whole bunch of country roads, hills and cleared land for farming.
There are several other county seats and assorted small towns, sure - but in any of them, if you don't like the view, drive a couple blocks and there ya go, fixed.

Oh man, John. I used to do a lot of work in that general area of Kansas. Mostly further east though. I always loved being sent to new small towns that I had never been to before, so much history just waiting to be rediscovered.
If you have the time on your return trip, you should see Wilson lake. Bluest water I have seen in Kansas. Also Chapman, the town got almost completely wiped out by a tornado and they rebuilt much of it. I was actually there when Extreme Makeover: Home Edition was wrapping up their shoot on a house they built for someone in the Army stationed at Ft. Riley. It would be hard to get around in a motor home, but Ft. Riley has some amazing old stone buildings.
Ok, I am getting a little excited thinking about all this. One of my favorite routes in Kansas is connected to I-70 near Junction City. (Warning: Curvy two lane roads with no shoulder ahead.) Take Hwy. 57 south down to Dwight, KS. (That first leg is so amazing during the Spring and Fall.) Next turn on Hwy. 4 and follow it east to Hwy. 177. Now you have a decision to make. Head back north to I-70 and you will not be disappointed with the scenery. Or, head south to Council Grove and some more amazing historical buildings and locations, including the Trail Days Cafe with historic cuisine and a history lesson. Follow Hwy. 56 east out of Council Grove through the rolling Flint Hills and you will hit I-335 which will lead back I-70, if you head north.
If you have even more time on your hands and want to stretch your legs, follow Hwy. 177 south out of Council Grove until you get to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. They have walking trails and Bison roaming the prairie like they were meant to. From there, you can head south a piece and pick up Hwy. 50 and head east toward Emporia (The Founding City of Veterans Day) and then get on I-35 to get you back on your way home. By the way, a little further south on Hwy. 177 from the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve is Cottonwood Falls with one of the oldest courthouses in use west of the Mississippi.
Well, if you have read this far, and are not John then I hope you get a chance to see some of these places that make Kansas not worth flying over. If you are John, then I hope you have a great trip home whether you take any of my suggestions or not.
    God bless!
