The Rut is no joke. A juvenile male deer came at me as I was going to my mail box. I thought how cute. Then his nose started twitching. He came closer and started to go at me with his antlers. Next thing I was gored in the arm and he was pushing me to the ground. I don't know if it was adrenaline or what but I was able to grab both antlers and push him away enough to slip under the fence and run to my house. Then off to the hospital to get stitched up! I'm not too fond of walking Outdoors now without a weapon.
Never make eye contact with a wild creature. Women should be aware that certain times of the month they should probably not go into the wild. A quick movement can set some wild animals off especially a turn of the back or attempt at running. Moose are very unpredictable. I have a couple stories but, will not post them here concerning moose.

Two moose memories from Isle Royal #1 seeing a fellow hiker chasing a moose in the river... #2 after arriving at the lean to my friend and I commented between ourselves about the sturdy build of the lean to. #3 the sound of my friend running in the dark at top speed back from the out house...entering the lean to , securing the substantial door closer and KA BAM moose rammed lean to. Good times!
@@kellil3845 no it is not. Moose can be 8' at the shoulder. & weigh up to ( or more) 1200#. Heavy antlers can be 6' wide. They stomp & rear up just like a horse. They lower their heads & ram. Moose are very agile. They can turn & change position very quickly. Plus, they have short bursts of speed & can accelerate quickly. You do not ever want to approach or antagonize one. Female Moose can be extremely ornery.
As a hiker in Canadian Rockies … happed to me …😬.. had to run in a lake up to my knees behind a large pile of brush. We played that dance for about 30 minutes until that moose hear human voices coming near … then he left 🥵😯

We looked at each other for a few seconds then I turned my head to get my phone for a picture. When I turned around - gone. The thing I remember most is the total silence of the encounter, the moose’s stealthy appearance and departure, was a thing of beauty.
Last year I saw a moose on a trail in Millcreek Canyon, UT. He would take a few steps, then stop and look at us. Finally he went sideways down the hill. We were behind a wooden barrier. It was a male, 3-5 years old, and weighed as much as three of us.
You know I really have a problem when people say “oh we were out hiking/ camping/ driving etc “ in hopes to encounter or catch a glimpse at these magnificent animals, but honestly aren’t aware of any danger they are about to experience or potentially cause harm to the animals by simply being in their habitat. That Moose was kind enough to give them a warning ⚠️ He Bluff charged them and could easily plowed & gored them as he trampled throughout the shelter. Seriously please think of your surroundings and know when it’s rutting time, you’re basically at the mercy of your own will to make it out of the situation and tell the story of how you 🫵🏽💩👖… or maybe better yet educate others about safety and what our own actions can lead to in terms of death, the rangers would have to track down and euthanize that Bull Moose if he decided to protect himself and his territory. Shame on any National Park that doesn’t provide protection for the animals and post warnings for those humans who just don’t… okay so um yeah I leaving my opinion at this point… obviously I have ranted on lengthy enough.. Please be mindful of where you are and all animals that live in the area you are visiting

You walked across the US? Way to go you! Are there connecting trails, did you take a meandering route or follow highways? We have the Trans Canada Trail here, it incorporates woodland trails and paved sidewalks for biking, walking, horseback riding, anything non motorized. My husband and I were walking one section without realizing it, we kept saying we'll turn around at trails end, thought we were in a park, nope. We eventually saw a sign marking the trail, definitely a much longer walk than we had planned.
I worked at The Moose VC in Colorado, near Walden, the moose capitol, and moose are way more dangerous than bears, because they are very unpredictable.

My grandma brought me to isle royal, she was also mostly blind and had poor decision making. She all but touched a baby moose in a thicket of trees, I grabbed her arm and whispered Grandma Grandma!! I will always think mama moose was watching, telling my grandma to take her calf and get on!🤣
Be careful what you wish for. I prayed for a chance to see a Grizzly Bear in Glacier National Park. My dream came true when a grizzly walked out onto the trail 30 feet from me, and hung around out of curiosity. Be careful what you wish for. You might just get it.

A local said one time a moose attacked his VW and completely destroyed it. In Yellowstone we saw a mommy moose and her baby. Some idiot decided to get up close to take a picture. What’s wrong with these people? Never never get between a mom and her baby. Luckily the guy made it back to his car. Moose are mean and dangerous. Never confront them.

I met a moose up close alongside a lake in Maine. We were both startled. He was very polite, calmly slipped into the water and swam away.
I think it depends on the time of year. In the Autumn, males are very aggressive, scraping the velvet off their antlers and getting ready to fight.
