I went to seminary, but I learn more by watching this man's videos. I am considering becoming a Catholic. I grew up in a conservative Christian environment. After being the military and meeting people from all walks of life, I am no longer conservative but a Christian, who loves Jesus Christ. I love how Catholics believe in science. How does one become a Catholic?
Some science like biology and physics help us understand *how* God created all of creation. But one must be careful in what you believe when it comes t. science. Most are mere theories and lead away from the faith. The way i did it was i was gnostic raised lutheran. Had an experience so i started researching and then went to mass. After mass i was just staring around at everything and someone asked me if i needed help and i said yeah i want to convert. Couple more weeks until my confirmation
A Cyr, before you cross the Tiber, I would suggest to you that Protestantism is a wider and deeper pool than your upbringing and experience might have lead you to believe. There are many pastors and theologians who are not in communion with Rome (or Constantinople), who believe the science of evolution and an old Earth are compatible with Christian beliefs while also upholding the Bible as the sole god-breathed authority for the church. If you are drawn to Roman Catholic liturgical worship, the Anglican and Lutheran traditions have similar practices. Thank you Father Casey for your concise outline and teaching of Fransican Theology! I am currently studying Bonaventure and Aquinas at St. Joseph's seminary Dunwoodie and am left truly inspired! I recall that famous meeting so many years ago when a junior professor at the University Of Paris St. Thomas Aquinas, asked a senior professor St. Bonaventure where he acquired his learning. Bonaventure then pointed to a crucifix and said, " Whoever gazes upon Christ crucified with Faith, Hope, and Love will celebrate the passion with Him". I recall another heartfelt encounter .... Aquinas, before the cross of Christ, praying before God many years later and the Lord saying to Thomas. "You have written well of me Thomas, what would you desire as a reward? At this, Thomas broke into tears as he replied, nothing Lord, I'm doing it all for you!" After pondering these two experiences of Bonaventure and Aquinas I am left with this question. "Is Franciscan Theology that exclusive to Dominican spirituality or are they more complimentary?" When we consider that God is both love and the ultimate truth, it becomes apparent that these two perspectives can enrich each other. The personal experience of love and union with God can be deepened and enriched through intellectual exploration and understanding. Likewise, intellectual assent and reason can be illuminated and given practical application through the transformative power of love. Rather than viewing these perspectives as mutually exclusive, it can be fruitful to explore their complementary aspects. By integrating the personal experience of love with intellectual assent and reason, we can cultivate a more holistic and comprehensive understanding of God and grow in our relationship with Him. Both perspectives have the potential to deepen our faith and lead us towards the perfection of love in God. I believe St. Thomas Aquinas with the spiritual direction of St. Bonaventure accomplished exactly that! Before listening to you explain the distinctions of Fransiscan Theology, I was not aware of an important revelation in the friendship between Bonaventure and Aquinas. We do know that both priests met and conversed extensively at the University of Paris. We do not know the extent of that connection. I believe their spiritual, indeed their connection as brothers was deeper then we may realize! When the younger Aquinas was learning from the older Bonaventure as he pointed to the cross and told Aquinas , "Whoever gazes upon the cross of Christ with faith, hope, and love will celebrate the passion with Him." Thomas broke out into tears because he understood the words of Bonaventure! Aquinas wrote extensively about the theological virtues of faith , hope and love. I believe he was listening ever intently to Bonaventure. Thomas was an eager ntense listener. listening to Bonaventure I believe was partly responsible for Aquinas later in life manifesting the very lesson Bonaventure was trying to teach him! They were both bonded sacramentally through Holy Orders in ways beyond human comprehension.

Hello Fr. Casey! Great video, I didn't know that about Franciscans. I have learned about the simple way of life by living the Gospel as St. Francis did (which is not as simple as it sounds, very challenging at times)but, I guess that is why we have different charisms in the church, we all can identify ourselves with one according to our personalities, not everyone can be a Jesuit and not all can be Franciscans. Happy St. Francis Feast day in advance! I am not a volunteerist, but I can absolutely agree with the rest of this. I do believe each of these paths holds a piece of understanding God's nature and this is simply because God is God and we are His creatures attempting to understand Him and we can only do so imperfectly and apparent contradictions, might just be our lack of ability to comprehend for one reason or another. Look at how the relationship with nature and the supernatural has changed, with increased scope we no longer believe illness is a curse directly or that wolves are evil just because they oppose our efforts to raise livestock. And more of late, the illusion of science being contraindicated by religion has largely fallen away on our side of the debate. And we continue to be open to growth while still holding to our Tradition, Scripture and the Magisterium and intellectual tradition of the Church. Be under no illusions, we have a long arduous fight for souls on our hands, but God is at work knitting things together in ways we can hardly even grasp. God bless you dear reader. Thank you so much for this video! I am a professed Secular Franciscan and have been downheartened lately as the fraternity that I am in is more liberal in belief and I am more conservative. I started to feel like maybe I do not fit in with the Franciscan beliefs. I love Francis for his simplicity, love of the Church, seeing Christ in others, and joy of the Gospel. I see a lot of what appears to be garden statue loving Franciscans. Francis had the heart of a knight and that is the Francis who I feel called to follow to lead me closer to Christ. Thank you for letting me know that there is no set school of Franciscsnism and that it is alright to be who I am in my Franciscsn calling.
Franciscans are conservatives. The Jesuits are liberal. I left NY state because of how liberal it is. Cardinal Dolan and Andrew Cuomo are ok with infanticide. I think Cuomo has dirt on Dolan. So Dolan doesnt speak out. The pope doesnt speak out against it either. HE IS A Jesuit!
Dustin your comment resonated with me. I am in formation to become a member of the Third Order and I often feel the same way. And yet I know that I am a Franciscan and am called to live as one. Your comment about the spiritual knighthood is something that I think about a lot, and is the exact way I think of St. Francis. You are in my prayers ❤️
I agree with your concerns about the liberal fraternity. It seems many to most have lost something in the founder - St Francis and become more worldly. Many of the Seculars don't pray their Christian Prayer regularly or continue reading about St Francis/St Clare - they do it once when they are new and then put it aside. Where is the penitential life? I haven't seen it for years. The question is, how do we bring it back?? - without being looked upon as old fashioned fuddy duddies.
Theology is such a beautiful subject! I wish to study it in the future although there are not alot of colleges with a degree in theology but i pray that others will study it in the future!
As a Roman Catholic who has spent many years studying with and practicing with the Sufis (Islamic Mystics), I cannot help but see that both traditions share the same basic approach to spirituality. For the Sufis, the Light of God (Nur al-Muhammed) is the divine logos by which all things were created. And it is through the interior presence (Batin) of this Light of God that Man God's highest creation, can come to know God with the aim of achieving deification (Haqiqat). Since the Light of God is present in the created world, it behooved man to recognize this light in the creation and treat creation as the domicile of the Lord. This is especially true for other people regardless of race or religion, animals, and other creatures of God. I am reminded of a famous passage in the Holy Quran that says, "God is nearer to you than your jugular vein." God Bless.
It also seems to have a Celtic christianity worldview (Atleast according to her worldview such as St. Patrick or St. Morgan of Wales, which while the latter is considered more heretical, he should be treated as a human.) I am influenced by Eastern Catholicism & Celtic Christianity and Franciscan Christianity came up as truly a great theology.
To me, this is probably the best video you have made. God is in all things and that is how we should approach the world ..... truth is found in the particular ..... in the heart of an individual's prayer ...... in what one can see and hear and touch .... faith is not just an intellectual exercise for its own sake, but something that is embodied and is meant to be acted upon. Dominus vobiscum ......
I have a deep respect for Saint Thomas Aquinas. Knowing that his ideas are counter to my beloved Franciscans - has thrown me for a loop. Then add my familial and emotional ties to the Carmelites and I am...confused. I am too old for seminary but which church I go to worship, and which foundational/intellectual ideas I adhere to are very important to me. If I had the money I'd say it is time for a retreat 🙏
Excellent video Fr. Casey. Our own Fr. Joe likes to talk about the importance of hacceity: the this-ness” of each individual creature. Thanks for helping me share some of our intellectual tradition with friends, family, and those I work with.
As an Anglican, I'm struck by just how similar Anglican Theology is to Franciscan Theology. Obviously it's not a 1 to 1, but from emphasis on Incarnation, Theosis and and the "personal and experiential" there are a lot of similarities.
As a Protestant that should ring alarm bells! Mystical experiences are not what we base faith in Jesus Christ on but on His work on the cross at Calvary, His death, burial and resurrection.
@@awatchwoman I don't know how you can read the new testament and then claim that the mystical has no place in Christianity. Mystery is at the very center of Christian faith, your conception of which sounds very impoverished. And I say this as a protestant myself. (a Lutheran, to be specific)
@@glynglyn5473 I am afraid your "lady" if you refer to Mary, is a dead sinner who knew our Lord and called Him her Lord, never equal to God, not to be worshipped and adored, she can not hear any prayer you send her either. You are deceived, she is Ashtaroth whom you speak to, a goddess in Baal worship.
Father Casey, first of all congratulations on your ordination this year and thank you for making all of these incredible videos. The perspective you offer is always astounding and rational in a world of factions and polarization. There are so many different Franciscan orders, as you say in this video, each with distinct theologies. To which order do you belong, if any specifically? I’m sorry if my question seems silly, I don’t know how the different orders are organized. Thank you Father and May God bless you abundantly and St Therese pray for you in this day that she died!
As an Orthodox Christian I am SO happy to hear that the idea of Theosis is again creeping into the consciousness of the West!! Of all the things that keep us separate, the ability to grow closer to God through union with him directly (my definition of theosis) was in my opinion the major thing keeping us apart! If we cannot agree that salvation is union with God how could we move forward? I pray that your video here reaches many ears to hear this great news!
Pretty much all of our Doctors speak of union with God. Particularly the Carmelites, St Catherine, St Bonaventure. But even St Thomas mentions it. The only reason it seems he doesn't emphasize it, is because his greatest contribution is approaching the Preambula Fidei (demonstrating the reasonableness of God's existence, the moral law, and the necessity of Divine Revelation etc.) through reason alone. I.e, without appealing from data we get from Revelation. But of course at the beginning of the Summa, he makes it clear; this kind of Theology is only the *beginning*. We should ultimately go beyond mere thinking about "data" in theology, to true intimacy with God.
I love the Franciscans!!! Why do I love it so much?! Well...the place where I was born is all about Saint Francis of Assisi ( San Francisco de Asis ) Town San Francisco, Saint of the town San Francisco de Asis, school where I went to seventh grade is San Francisco de Asis. The church where I was baptize before my fifth birthdays is Saint Francis of Assisis. God bless you all. Thank you so for the video Fr. Casey. Peace, and love to all.
I remember when I was a teenager, our white budgie, Annabelle, had died during the night. When I said I hope to see her in Heaven, my devout mom insisted that animals don't have souls so they don't go to Heaven. I went to my room and wept. I've always felt that any creature capable of affection and joy has a soul. I just can't help this. Budgies are but one example of God's beautiful creation, with all of His infinite and tender love behind it.
Father Casey, would you ever consider doing a video about the work of Father Richard Rohr, and Progressive Christianity, the universal Christ Etc ? That would be so helpful......how to be open to new perspectives without falling into herasy...thank you
Really great videos - I’ve always wondered about St Francis and the Franciscan order. I feel like it’s important to mention that First Nations peoples have similar concepts of equality and unity with all of creation. The tree and the ant, neither is more important than the other. They see nature as their kin. Which is why I have been interested in at Franciscan’s because in some other Christian religions there is an isolation process that occurs where we don’t always extend kindness and compassion outside of people. (A good example of this is a church that wishes to expand and by doing so destroys the fragile habitat of an endangered bird.) Yet i see the crux amidst all of this is to live as Jesus lived. Thankyou for the video !
This was just an amazing video. I guess there's a tendency to pain Christianity with a broad brush, I had no idea about any of these beliefs. I think your faith is truly beautiful, and I say that as a non-believer. I think what your doing is fantastic, and I wouldn't dream of ever seeing it go away.
wow, this is very interesting and thought-provoking, indeed. Given the fact that over centuries Thomism has been the hegemonical school in Catholic Theology, does the Franciscan intellectual tradition adopt some elemens from that school?
I am surprised that you have nòt commented about the Amazonian Synod. Please read Fr Mark Goring's impassioned message about keeping our Church true to it's mission.
Where two Franciscans are gathered in His name, there is bound to be three or more opinions Just kidding while Thomas Aquinas is without a doubt my favorite Saint I have been discerning the OFM so much revently
I actually knew very little about the theology of the Franciscans before joining. I was inspired more by their spirituality and practical way of living, experienced through their humility and service.
I am an evangelical Christian, but I've recently been fascinated with Franciscans. I am not considering becoming a Catholic because of my beliefs in solo scriptura, salvation by grace through faith alone, and my denial of the pope's authority, confessional, transubstantiation, and so on. What I've been pondering recently is living a very simple life. I want to gain wealth to help people around the world, as well as go on missions and provide for a family one day, but I have recently realized the futility in material items. I think one of the things that I like most about Franciscans is the tunic. Clothes, especially can represent a lavish and gluttonous lifestyle and I don't feel good wearing very expensive clothing. Living in simplicity has brought me closer to God in the past, so how can I include this in my Evangelical beliefs?
There can be such a confusion among the un-Churched in worshipping the created rather than the Creator. That the natural world around us displays the power and beauty of our Lord seems quite appropriate and I am grateful for it. How though can I help those who have fallen into things like wicca and paganism in sharing this wonderment without enforcing the pagan or animistic beliefs.
May sound weird but i have a portrait of st francais next to my portrait of karl marx. Not in a worshiping way but men that have inspired me in my life
It's so nice to know that all the identities we Christians have in our churches are within the Catholic church. So like why don't we all just like come on and be Catholic and just like be Catholic with these Franciscan identities right?
Hmm, I think the explanation of the Thomistic theology of the incarnation was a bit lacking... What if you seek out a Dominican friar to speak with in a video? Matt Fradd had an excellent and young (your age) Dominican on his show for over 2 hours delving deeeep into Catholic theology awhile back (you can find it on the Matt Fradd channel) I would love to hear the two of you (the particular Dominican friar I mentioned above) discuss the theology of the incarnation in depth. I know I gravitate towards a more Thomistic understanding, but I think a longer conversation would be good.
Thanks for explaining this! Before you mentioned theosis I thought how it reminded me of Eastern theology.. the orthodox also believe that the incarnation must a occur even if man didn’t fall.
thank you for posting this...i never been a big guy on legalistic theology....this video gives me hope as a catholic to realize that catholicism is more than just a bunch of angry catholics online who never havade h a person experience with God except through legalistic theology.
I am NOT however saying theology is not necessary ..... it is....but I am just saying you cannot reduce God to something like a book and wonder why you never have a spiritual experience...

I love all the religious in Christ
Such intellectual pious catholic orders! Praise be to Jesus from holy infant to Christ Adult! Glory be to God! 🙏
Thanks for a very informative summary of Franciscan theology -- and boy am I going to have to go off and do some reading!
I recently discovered Duns Scotus. WOW! He explains our call better than anyone else. Thanks for this great summary of his ideas. AMEN!
So grateful for you Fr. Casey!
Once again Father Casey makes a complicated subject very understandable.
Could you do a video about the origin of the mass. Like how our liturgy developed
This is wonderful I knew there was a reason why I have been attracted to St Francis and Franciscan monasticism.
I really enjoy this as someone who has taken Catholic vowels along time ago.
Thank you brother, so insightful. Had no idea that our beliefs had so much in common
Franciscan theology undoubtedly has Eastern Catholic inspiration in it
It also seems to have a Celtic christianity worldview (Atleast according to her worldview such as St. Patrick or St. Morgan of Wales, which while the latter is considered more heretical, he should be treated as a human.)
I am influenced by Eastern Catholicism & Celtic Christianity and Franciscan Christianity came up as truly a great theology.
7:30 Study is only allowed if it does not extinguish spirit of prayer.
A beautiful homily, Fr, Casey! Thanks!
Best video yet !
Great video, Frater Casey!! p & b
Excellent video Fr. Casey. Our own Fr. Joe likes to talk about the importance of hacceity: the this-ness” of each individual creature. Thanks for helping me share some of our intellectual tradition with friends, family, and those I work with.
This video is Fr Casey at his best. Maybe it’s true as he says- maybe it’s just because I’m a Franciscan myself. Bravo !
Who is this friar / do you how I can contact him?
Good chatting. Learnt a lot.😊
I learn a lot from you channel thank you for your knowledge you’ve share
As an Anglican, I'm struck by just how similar Anglican Theology is to Franciscan Theology.
Obviously it's not a 1 to 1, but from emphasis on Incarnation, Theosis and and the "personal and experiential" there are a lot of similarities.
If you weren't aware, there is an Anglican Franciscan order.
Iam blessed with my love and trust in our lady⚘
Awesome video. Thanks
Blessed Duns Scotus, pray for us!
Thank you for sharing this with us !
You are a blessing to us 😘
Thanks be to God! ☺️🌺🕊️🙏🏽
Amazing video, Father. Thank you!
Outstanding teachings, thank you
As a Secular Franciscan I found this most helpful. Who would have thought Casey Cole was more like Dan Horan than it appears on the surface.
Another great video Father!
Excellent video. Both informative and well presented.
Twitter from San Fransisco..
That would be so helpful......how to be open to new perspectives without falling into herasy...thank you
This is also a question I wanted to ask. Thank you for bringing this one !
(A good example of this is a church that wishes to expand and by doing so destroys the fragile habitat of an endangered bird.)
Yet i see the crux amidst all of this is to live as Jesus lived.
St Bonaventure pray for us!
wow, this is very interesting and thought-provoking, indeed. Given the fact that over centuries Thomism has been the hegemonical school in Catholic Theology, does the Franciscan intellectual tradition adopt some elemens from that school?
Thanks!
Thank you!
Now you should do “what is Franciscan philosophy”
I am surprised that you have nòt commented about the Amazonian Synod. Please read Fr Mark Goring's impassioned message about keeping our Church true to it's mission.
Where two Franciscans are gathered in His name, there is bound to be three or more opinions
Just kidding while Thomas Aquinas is without a doubt my favorite Saint I have been discerning the OFM so much revently
Whilst Dominicans dwell on the idea of God through reasoning, Franciscans introduce God as someone who's personal and intimate.
Aristotelian reasoning.. I prefer Platon & Euclides and that School.. Fransicians limit reasoning..
Praise the Lord Jesus Christ 🙌🙏😇
I was baptized in a Franciscan Parish. Guess that means I'm a Franciscan! Now it makes sense why my Catholic spiritual life is the way it is!
I introduce your videos to my nephew in Franciscan seminary Kerala India now all seminary is big fan of your videos 😂❤.
Great video Father and well produced. Was it the broad theology of Franciscans that drew you to them? Or where there other elements?
I actually knew very little about the theology of the Franciscans before joining. I was inspired more by their spirituality and practical way of living, experienced through their humility and service.
@@BreakingInTheHabit It's a very inspiring way to live so I can understand the draw to that lifestyle. Thanks for replying!
@@BreakingInTheHabit Please reply to my recent comment I am bit confused watching your video!
You guys should go back into the quadrivium, with some more euclides and plato.
Similar to how I view things 😊
There are secular franciscan orders. Not everyone in those is Catholic.
Also, have you read The Road Less Traveled?
Or The Joy of Less?
@@r.j.whitaker No I haven't read either of those
Franciscan theology is my Jam! ❤️
My entire relationship with God woke up and began to become truly whole when I read only an outline of Franciscan theology. No going back!
I went to a Franciscan school here in Australia. Franciscanism is Boss Baby!
May sound weird but i have a portrait of st francais next to my portrait of karl marx. Not in a worshiping way but men that have inspired me in my life
Yes. paz y bien.
In some ways, what you've described, resembles John Wesley's Method, the Methodists, and the Friends (the Quakers) outlook
You had me at "our intellectual tradition"
It's so nice to know that all the identities we Christians have in our churches are within the Catholic church. So like why don't we all just like come on and be Catholic and just like be Catholic with these Franciscan identities right?
Got to love those Franciscans
Hmm, I think the explanation of the Thomistic theology of the incarnation was a bit lacking... What if you seek out a Dominican friar to speak with in a video? Matt Fradd had an excellent and young (your age) Dominican on his show for over 2 hours delving deeeep into Catholic theology awhile back (you can find it on the Matt Fradd channel)
I would love to hear the two of you (the particular Dominican friar I mentioned above) discuss the theology of the incarnation in depth.
One of the great treasures of Eastern theology!
This video tells me that one of the greatest theologians ever, Hans Urs von Balthasar, was very Franciscan indeed...
Can yo please elaborate what William of Ockham contributed to the Catholic Church ?
thank you for posting this...i never been a big guy on legalistic theology....this video gives me hope as a catholic to realize that catholicism is more than just a bunch of angry catholics online who never havade h a person experience with God except through legalistic theology.
I am NOT however saying theology is not necessary ..... it is....but I am just saying you cannot reduce God to something like a book and wonder why you never have a spiritual experience...
@@Marco85111 haha tell that to Vatican I and Thomism which had great saints of the era in Europe and the fallout after Vatican II and compromising of Faith....
