Father Casey if Franciscans hadn’t adapted to society we wouldn’t be listening to you right now. I think that would be a loss. I struggle with my faith sometimes. Being able to listen to your lectures is so helpful. Perhaps it is the virtues that Francis cultivated that must be the common thread through the centuries. Humility and kindness. Authenticity, compassion, empathy.

      YESHUA CRISTO, Ave MARÍA🌹🌷🌹
Saints Francis & Clare of Assisi, have many sons and daughters. I've latched on St. Anthony of Padua, St. Joseph of Cupertino & especially St. Padre Pio of Petrelcina, or should I say, they have latched on to me.
The Benedictines, Franciscans, Carmelites, Dominicans, Salesians, Harolds of the Gospel & the Jesuits are all great to.
"Pax et Bonum/Peace and Goodness. I only fear my sins"
      - St. Francis from Assisi of JESUS & MARY🌹🌷🌹

Hello there! There is still a Franciscan community, founded in Italy, called Frati Minori Rinnovati They have a few communities spread around the world, such as in Africa and Colombia. Some of them still walk barefoot and, all of them do not receive money. You can take food to them, and additionally, all food is shared with the poor, sometimes not even too much left for them. Some of his founders, who are still alive, met Padre Pio when they joined their vocation. They depend on people generosity when it comes to medical assistance or other necessities. They are called "rinnovati" which means renewed, bringing back alive the origins of the Franciscan community.

Jesus, most certainly. God in the flesh. Redeemer of all nations. King of Kings. Lord of Lords. Name above all names.
But Mary? While she was blessed by God, perhaps more than any other woman in history, she is still right now what our Lord is not. Dead. Leave the woman who’s been dead for nearly 2000 years alone and pray in the name of our risen Lord!
One thing I don’t get is the insistence of ignoring the command in the Bible that says “pray only to God”.

I went to Italy in 2006. When I went to the church his relics and remains are kept in Assisi, his cloaks were so simple, humble, and poor looking. I eventually went down to the what is the basement, and his remains are kept in a casket inside of a stone box that sits in the middle of a small pillar in the middle of a small room, with a single knealer in front of it. Nothing flashy. Nothing that draws attention to it. Nothing that glorifies him as a man, but honors the way he lived; humble, simple, and poor because to him the Lord came first and so did others.
I ended up getting back to my hotel and broke down crying. Originally thinking I was homesick, but I think it was just how powerful seeing his resting place was, just perfect and simple. I remember kneeling there and saying a prayer to thank God I had the opportunity to be there, and to thank his son Francis for being a great saint to be a model for others. I was the only Catholic on the trip, and I would love to go back there and stay.

The Dominicans, who started around the same time as the Franciscans, were much the same way. St. Dominic wanted the Dominicans to travel and preach the gospel and live much as the apostles, surviving off the generosity of others. But it was quickly realized that wasn’t going to work for many reasons. It’s much like you said the Dominicans and the Franciscans are not their founders. Many of their followers could only hope to try and live up to a fraction of their founders.
I think many of these changes have helped both to thrive grow and bring their ministries to many more places than they might have otherwise.

Even St. John Bosco told St. Dominic Savio not to imitate the severe penances practiced by the Saints of the past.
Not everything that the Saints and their followers did in the past must be imitated exactly by Catholics in the 21st century.
The Church does allow for changes in times and circumstances, and adapts to new technology as well.
All these factors will have some effect on the daily lives of Catholics.

I didnt get the logic here. In the beginning you clearly said st francis didnt even like the way his contemporaries acted, so why do you use the 'tradition vs modernity' argument? Also, as you already know how strict his standards were, why not just change the orders name rather than claim to still be franciscans? Honest questions and no offense meant.

It's wise to not get stuck on the externals. It is the Franciscan charism which continues to guide the First, Second, and Third Orders. The Franciscan spirit is one of simplicity, humility, peacefulness, and joy. It emphasizes poverty (of spirit) and service to the poor.

There is definitely a sense that he was heartbroken by the change, but it did not change because of one friar. By the time Francis died, there were more than 5000 friars in the order. It simply grew well beyond his leadership in directions he couldn't control. No one person (or group of people) is responsible for this.

Tradition: epiclesis; anemnesis; the eucharistic prayer including take, bless, break, share; the Eucharist as a meal and sacrifice; active participation of the laity, role of the presider as the one who offers sacrifice.
To be honest, I don't entirely agree with relegating things like posture, translations, etc., to a "little t" category, because that would imply that they are relatively meaningless, which would be gravely mistaken. A translation is either accurate and faithful to the original meaning or it is not. Having a translation of the liturgy that is accurate and faithful to the original Latin text is hardly a matter of small importance, and certainly not a "little t" tradition that may or may not be included in the liturgy.

It's logical to adapt to the times as long as the purpose of the order remains strong spiritually. Too much materialism isn't good for the Christian life (whether religious order or secular). We have a lot more distractions nowadays than St. Francis had which I think makes it easier now to detach from God's First and Second Commands.

To me, Francis would’ve been what the rich man who questioned Jesus about “What good thing must I do to get to heaven.” I think Francis was the one who took Jesus advice.
    Matthew 19:21
“Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”

It's interesting to me why you had to redownload this video from the other day. What happened to the comments from me and others from that previous download? Did you find them so offensive? Did the opinion of people other than Franciscans clash too much, as a former priest told me, and not go along with the party line? Just wondering.

@@monicaambrosio2938 Since the original video was taken down I lost my comments and about a half dozen or so additional comments from others as well as my replies. My original comment as I remember most of it: Sure things have changed. Jesus rode into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey wearing rough clothing. Today a bishop rides into town on the seat of a Cadillac wearing custom made clothing. I also had a comment about the "good priest" mentioning how Pope Francis has shunned typical priestly garments and I replied that this pope has a net worth of $2,000,000 made since he was a priest and now pope. I was asked if bishops should be poor and I replied that they shouldn't live better than their average parishioner.

Do you think that St Francis would be the same if he was born this days?

    • @mi-ka-eltheguardian3837

This is a very good question . I think that He would not be so. We are also a product of our environment ; today the Church is already moving toward the ideal of evangelical poverty and fraternal love , which was inspired by the same St Francis . Back in his days , there was lots of laxity and corruption going on , thus the call to rebuilt the Church of Christ .

The censure and finally the excommunication of the Fraticelli in 1296 probably ought to figure into the discussion. There was a broad continuum among the Franciscans at the time, from standard OFM to the loudest of the Spirituals bent on declaring the institutional church scandalous and hypocritical. It seems to me the Fraticelli were singled out due to the threat they posed to the *political* power of the church. The greater effect, whether intended or not, was to force "middle of the road" Franciscans to adopt more acceptable (comfortable) lifestyles. The voice of the poor was removed forever, and the legacy of St. Francis became a hollow symbol. Suppression of alternative voices continues to this day. Study the actions of my friend, Fr. Jerry Zawada, OFM, may he rest in peace. In what way did any of his activities truly offend the core principles of Christianity? In what way did anything he did violate the expectations of our Holy Father Francis? How did his actions significantly go beyond those of fellow activists, such as Fr. Daniel Berrigan? I find in Jerry's life no offensive acts, and yet he was persecuted by his own province and eventually forbidden to publicly celebrate the Mass. Tow the line, watch your step...donning the brown habit means adhering to the narrow path set out by the institutional church, in many cases suppressing the possibilities of Pure and Perfect Joy. PM

There is a song I believe it's in Latin. In the early 90s I went to camp with Frasicans, and this song is in my head. Personally won't get the lyrics right, but I'd really like to find the name of the song. It sounds like " Maria common loposky, yes in chanta menta" if someone can translate that I would be shocked. I can sing that part, but I have no idea what the chant means or what the name of the Chant is.

Begging for food, do some menial work to live out side the comfort of the walls of friary. Preach by our way of living, to visit the place where the poors live, and live few days with them. have morning and evening prayers done there as a sign of witness

I consider myself a Franciscan Catholic despite making money and living quite differently than the rule of poverty because there was far more about St Francis than just that aspect. I admit it's different for the layperson than the clergy but I would never expect the clergy to live static standards of an outward thing.
