I would give the season overall a 7/10. This was a good season and I would say more entertaining than seasons 5-8. BUT I agree the ending was rushed, and the complete missed opportunity with a dexter batista reunion pissed me off. Harrison should have been the one to kill him. dexter was never a good person. Especially to his son.

I feel like the writers used the death stranding excuse to justify their ending. They say only the "smart fans" will get it. That's the exact same excuse extreme fanboys of death stranding used to defend that game. Even the games creator says he has no idea what's going on in the game and he made it but any criticism of that game when it came out was met with attacks from rabid fans saying "yOu jUsT dOnT uNderStAnD iT" and basically said anyone who doesn't like it is just a hater who only plays call of duty. And the games creator made the metal gear solid games so like dexter he was riding high for a few years, dropped the ball with metal gear 5 and then dropped the ball again with death stranding. I feel like the writers trying to justify the God awful ending by saying anyone who doesn't like it just isn't smart enough to get it is the exact same defence for that game lol

I'm most angry that I was fooled into believing they'd set it right with this revival. Phillips had done so well with the first 4 seasons of the show. So I was excited. It's shocking that it was THIS bad. What's insane about the ending too is that they pretend that Harrison, who did all of this horrible stuff, is suddenly the moral conscience of the show.

It feels like it undermines both Dexter and Angela how she barely has a niggle of a feeling Kurt is a bad guy after a lifetime of trying to find what happened to her friend. Yet in 2 days she figures out Dexter was actually a famous serial killer in a case that is for all intents solved and closed? I think that and Harrison’s 180 at the end are the two things that tore down the potential of the limited series

Same. The scene in the diner with the jukebox is a great example of how good the acting is. It's funny when he reacts to the Runaway song and starts dancing, but then also super unsettling. a great actor. He perfectly embodied the "creepy/but nice" serial killer that can blend into society because they fool people into thinking they are normal. The locking them in a room thing was also very creepy, and felt like it could happen in real life. The scene with Chloe was very good too.
heres a detail about the creation of Kurts character if you didn't know - :)
‘Dexter: New Blood’: Kurt Caldwell Was Inspired by a Real-Life Serial Killer -
"In the Dexter: New Blood Wrap-Up podcast, Executive Producer Scott Reynolds states that Kurt is “kind of” based on an Alaskan serial killer named Robert Hansen.
According to Screen Rant, Hansen operated out of a small town in Anchorage from 1971-1983. There he would pick up sex workers and take them back to his isolated cabin, where Hansen would rape them, then set them free in the surrounding woods. An armed Hansen would then hunt them down and kill them.
There are definitely some similarities between Kurt and Hansen. Both preyed on transient women, though Hansen mostly targeted sex workers, while Kurt went after young runaways passing through the area. Due to the transient lifestyle of their victims, both Kurt and Hansen’s crimes weren’t noticed as the work of a serial killer for quite some time. However, it’s notable that Kurt’s crimes are clearly not sexually motivated. He becomes almost disgusted when Chloe takes her shirt off while on camera.
Interestingly, Screen Rant also points out that the way Angela discovers Iris’ body could have been inspired by Hansen’s case. Angela finds Iris in a cave buried under a pile of rocks. Similarly, one of Hansen’s first victims was discovered buried under rocks in a gravel pit. "

This video was very cathartic for me. It's all the things I've been thinking about this season. Two things to add that also bug me about the finale:
    1. Harrison is willing to kill his dad after Dexter just saved him 2 episodes ago from another serial killer and he has no hesitation or remorse?
    2. The letter read at the end eludes to Dexter's dark urges and yet, Harrison acts as if he isn't aware of this fact about his father when he meets him. Also, the closing line "If Harrison doesn't show any dark tendencies, let me die so my son can live" - he showed dark tendencies so how is he "living" by killing his father? Now he's just a murderer and a runaway. (I assume it's set up as a possible spin off for Harrison but seriously...)
    3. The fact Harrison smiles at the very end really bothered me if they're trying to make it look like he is the good guy and killed his father to break the cycle. Looks like he was happy he killed his father.
Anyway, from one fan to another great video!

Great review. I agree, especially with Angela.
Her whole story bothers me the most.
Of all the people to catch Dexter and figure him out . . . Choosing someone we've known for five minutes and most of us don't care for, doesn't feel satisfying, Especially since she finds out so easily and it all kinda falls into her lap. Plus, she knew Dexter for years and "loved him", it made it hard to believe she wouldn't feel conflicted, uncertain, angry, sad ect about believing/knowing him to be a killer. She takes what she learns and just turns on him without any inner turmoil.
It's hard to swallow, especially given her ' evidence ' is sloppy at best and likely wouldn't hold up in court But we as an Audience our supposed to believe she has such a strong ' gut sense ' she just knows it's true but that same gut sense is also so weak that she falls for Kurt's bullshit story and just drops the biggest lead she's had, in the biggest case of her whole career ??? What ?? It's frustrating and the more you think about the season as a whole the more frustrating it gets 🤦🤬

It just all felt so rushed in the end after a masterful buildup. You want to show Dexter as a hypocrite who's no better than the people he kills? That's fine. You want Dexter to be killed by his own son? That's fine too. But the execution was so contrived. There was no reason for Dexter to freak out and kill Logan. He could've just waited until morning. All the evidence linking him to Matt's murder or the Bay Harbour Butcher are circumstantial. He could've easily pointed the finger at Kurt even mentioned how Harrison got the nail from one of Kurt's goons. Batasitia's presence wouldn't have changed anything he was the worst cop on the show. Also we needed more episodes of Dexter teaching Harrison the code. Not sure why the chose to focus so much time on the growing rift between the two then just rush through the actual teaching the code part.

As much as I hate the ending of season 8, I've ultimately decided that I like that ending better than New Blood's ending---not because Dexter dies in this new season, but because Dexter was still Dexter. Aside from initial confirmation of Harrison having his own dark tendencies, there did not seem to be a reason for this season. The writers even turned away from developing the plot of Harrison coming to terms with his own dark actions (ruining the lives of a classmate and his parents). Now all of a sudden, Harrison is "good" enough to talk his father into accepting his fate, and he drives off into the sunset, getting away with his own crimes? Bullsh*t. Dexter might as well have died in the damned hurricane!

Every scene with Harrison was like every other scene with Harrison and all Debra's scenes were nearly identical.

  • @DakNJaxter
    @DakNJaxter 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

The ending wasn't perfect, but it's vastly preferable to the last one.
A complicated issue for me is that the show is leaning into the idea that Dexter never cared about innocent people. That it was only window dressing, a story he tells himself, to hide the truth; that he enjoys the power he has over his victims. That ultimatly, he's no different from Kurt. Feeding an urge.
As a stand-alone series, this works fine, even with the fumbling final episode. He killed Max because Max killed 'MY DEER' (a symbol of his innocence?), he saved Molly so he could fuck with Kurt, and he killed Kurt for his own satisfaction, regardless of his given reasons. He didn't even really care about how Harrison felt about moving town.
However, it also asks us to throw the majority of Dexter's humanity under the bus. Especially from Seasons 1-8. Apparently he never felt true love until Harrison put him out of his misery. Harry, Deb, Rita, her kids, Lumen, Hannah. His friends at Miami Metro. Even his cat and mouse with Doakes. All those moments of sincerity, were actually false.
The middle ground is a bit more meta. One thing that bothered me about post Season 4 Dexter, is he grew increasingly arrogant, flippant, sloppy, and selfish. Any idea that he was a tortured soul just trying to do the best he could, slowly redeveloping his humanity, was fading away.
And in a sense, I got this feeling of warring sides of Dexter within New Blood. The side that had genuine humanity, and the side that would do anything tto get what he wanted. It was hard to tell which was driving him at first, but the latter slowly took over. He's pretty smarmy and despicable in that final episode. And in a moment of lucidity, he accepts that he's gone too far. That he has to abide the code, and give up his life. At least it was on his terms, and with someone he loved.
I guess my main issue is the implication that Harrison is the only person he's felt 'true' love for. It's pretty dismissive of the story, characters, and intentions of the previous seasons.
    ---------------
One nitpick of your review, I think the victim he hid in the cave was his first kill. It was sloppy and unplanned. It probably wasn't until stewing on it that he developed his habbit, and rationale for doing so.

And we used to see the same thing with Rita she would be so annoyed with Dexter and want to take a break from him but then her toilet would clog up and then she call him and say Dexter I need you.
And then to have Angela start investigating the one person who actually helped you with your iris discovery, it made no sense. Instead of saying hey, this Dexter guy could actually be -of-use to me possibly in solving my missing girls case that I haven’t been able to solve in 20 something years in this town of 2500 people, she decides to make him the criminal instead

He turns and shoots at the truck, leaves three bullet holes in the windshield and nobody notices this as he drives his truck around town.

Actually, I think the only way his death would have been satisfying is if he was killed by a killer in a battle for life and death, and they both end up killing each other, or the son trying to save his dad's life, but ultimately fail in time to save him.
This would have ended Dexter properly and then make Harrison more likable and give the season an appropriate send off.
As far as Batista, he would still be there and maybe even be involved in chasing him or something right up to the point of that death scene. Still have a send off and talk to Dexter before he dies. Imagine that conversation?!

This finale definitely gave me GoT vibes. Like, here are the plot points that need to happen, and instead of making a story that makes sense that leads from each plot point to the next, they just cram it all in and it makes no sense at all!
If their ultimate plan was to kill off dexter, there’s a way to do it so it would make sense and the fans would like it, or at least be okay with it. But everything about how they killed him was ridiculous. Can’t believe they messed it up so bad TWICE!

The worst part of the endig for me - aside of Miss Sherlock Holmes' BHB investigation, and Logan's inexplicable death - was the last and final confrontation between Dexter and Harrison, it was downright embarrassing. Harrison was b*thing about being left the whole season, who wanted to hear him bring up his abandonment issue AGAIN even in his last conversation with his dad?? And he needed to kill his dad and then read his letter one more time to finally understand WHY it happened on the first place? And we are supposed to think the kid is smart (has Dexter's brain, according to ghost Deb)? Who wanted to hear Dexter saying ''I'm sorry'' for the millionth time? Dexter was the majestic white buck?? It didn't feel like that. Some of Dexter's victims had a better death. This was a disgrace. Totally anticlimactic, predictable and just a big fat NO. Dexter as the main character of the story should have had the most epic, most memorable and jaw-dropping tear-jerker of a DEATH in the history of the show,, instead he was shot as a f*cking dog in the middle of a snowy, empty f*cking forest by his insuffereble, angsty-angry, turncoat, emo-punk teen son who then contently drove off to the f*cking sunset.

I can't see how they can write, then film, then watch this ending and feel it's a fitting send off is the biggest twist shocker of them all. It doesn't even make sense character development wise, like how does killing his father (his 1st kill) a step in the right direction for his mental stability? But it's ok, he re-read his letter to Hannah, while non-chalantly driving away in Dexter's truck.

The ending should've been Dexter taking the bullet for Harrison and getting killed by Kurt in front of him. Then Harrison would have the chance to kill Kurt or to turn him over. They could've just ended it like that with room for a new season with Harrison where he either followed his father's footsteps and became a killer, or he breaks this cycle and turns Kurt in and keeps his hands clean. In future seasons they could've used Harrison wanting to join the police academy to become a police officer like Logan. Trying to bring justice the right way and not Dexter's way.

The catch...there is a 2nd season and we do see next season that confrontation between he and Dexter. We get the trial. Maybe he gets away with it and then maybe Batista becomes the hunter and it looks similar to how it went down with LaGuerta, except there is no Deb to save him and this time it's Batista who has to take him down at the end of the 2nd New Blood season. Thats it. We get the arrest. We get the trial. We get the death and its done by people we give a crap about.

I agree on most of this review. I felt the ending was unearned. Harrison was unlikeable the whole series. Every time he was on screen I hoped it would be short.
I honestly thought Logan was going to be a Kurt lackey. Its the only way I could see Angela not figuring it out that he was a killer sooner.
    But other thoughts:
    - We have seen Dexter knock someone out with a chokehold before. No need for him to give Logan a chance for anything bad to happen.
    - Kurt was a good villain but his son being a screw-up seemed weird. With all of his dark desires, you'd think he would have gotten his son to grow up more disciplined. Keep the spotlight off him.
    - Quiet small ny town would be a lot harder to get away with some things makes sense. Miami had so much going on at all times that stuff behind the scenes would be less noticable.
Final shot of the episode should have been Dexter in his jail cell waiting for a lawyer (or to be released) and Batista walks in, stops, they lock eyes and he and says,"Dexter." (The same way he greeted him for 8 seasons)

Wow -- you could have read my mind and written my Season Review for me ---- your observations and comments are 99.9% EXACTLY the same points and opinions I had.
Side Note -- Unless I missed something, Angela never seems to have any appreciation to Dexter for him helping her to "solve" the 20 year murder cases she has been obsessed over....... and ..... Unless I am mistaken, as this story ended , Angela still has NO CLUE that Kurt is dead ---- so she will spend the rest of her life hunting for him.
As you and I both observed ... THIS would have been the key for Dexter to orchestrate his escape once again. He could have easily used this as the bargaining chip or "dangling carrot" to throw off Angela and help her "find Kurt" --- such that he could get free before Batista showed up.

Angel being one of the most likable, relatable, and kind characters from Miami would’ve been the perfect person to crack the case. He never suspected Dexter for a second and that’s why him finally solving it would’ve been the greatest ending.
To be honest a great way to fix the original ending from season eight is to just add “ tonight‘s the night“ over the final shot of Dexter looking into the camera.

First, your reviews are amazing and I enjoy them immensely. Secondly, for those who are praising the finale as a poetic end for Dexter, I would ask you to go rewatch the S7 finale again and then ask yourself how the S9 finale is any more poignant than that episode. Dexter told Deb to kill him because she was a good person and he loved her and was willing to sacrifice himself so she didn't have to live with his dark passenger as well. So his request for Harrison to kill him is no more meaningful than it was when he did it the first time. It's almost as if the writers for S9 read a synopsis for all the previous episodes and then tried to write this season without the details of the original series.

a brilliant and definitive analysis..and I whole heartedly agree! Just a thought......... if the final scene was Harrison driving away...and talking to his own"spiritual advisor" who was maybe someone who Harrison knew from when he was a toddler.... and who desired Dexters demise, and the conversation was such as " you did it exactly as we planned it Harrison" ..that would have been a totally off the wall ending...that we could have accepted????? not sure which character the spirit would have been....(maybe Harrisons own version of Deb??) . I think this would have mitigated the change in Harrisons character...suggesting he was faking everything all along...... just to kill the father he hated.... and satisfying Debs wanting Dexters life to be ended...so he couldnt damage anyone else. If this was the end game.... the writers could have had a montage at the end.... showing Harrisons deceits...... that would have been a brilliant story line..and a total surprise

I have a question about the cave? What happened with the bear that was on the other side of that deep hole? That bear never fell in but Dexter almost did. Why Angela never found that hole when she found her friends body. Dexter's shot in the leg losing blood as he is being hunted ended up healing pretty well. Kurtz's cabin was never inspected by the police for bodies during the show. Angela didn't hear her own daughter having sex with Harrison but was surprised when she found them in bed the next morning. She never questioned her daughter about it. Many issues ignored and not resolved.

  • @vagrant87

He would have never killed Logan in that situation. There was a lot of circunstancial evidence that wouldn't hold in a trial. Dexter's story could have been:
-Dexter distrusted Kurt since the cabin incident with the podcast girl, so he investigated a bit and found the place with the dead girls.
-Since there was a camera in the ladder, Kurt found out and threatened him to kill Harrison if Dexter went to the police. This also explains why they were acting weird at christmas.
-Kurt also framed Dexter of killing Mark using the fire and the Titanium nail, because Kurt wanted to get rid of Dexter.
-AND he tried to frame Dexter of killing the two drug-dealers, by paying one of them to tell a story about a needle, and by using a modus operandi of another serial killer (being one himself he probably googled about them) with the drug that Dexter told him on one occasion that he used on his sheep.
    -Everyone lives happily ever after
-Ok maybe Laguerta's folder has something else but I guess we'll never know

I watched your review of the series finale and man I literaly no joke actualy cried, I shed tear because of this ending. I respected Dexter so much since he had never killed an innocent (Laguerta and Doakes were not killed by Dexter, who asked Debra to shoot him instead of Laguerta so I don't consider him to have killed her). Then he out of nowhere in the last episode just goes and kills Logan. That right there just made me die inside the entire point of this tv show was that we had a ''good and moral'' serial killer and then out of nowhere he kills an innocent out of desperation? He knew that he had raised enough doubt about him being a killer and that he would probably not get caught but then he still kills Logan anyways... Oh man my heart is so heavy I am so dissapointed at that ending they could have done like 20 different better endings and they just chose to end everything in about 30 minutes? Everything that has been building up for years just ended like that in 30 minutes with him doing a stupid thing and just getting shot by his son like wtf man how do you take like a decade of building up the character and developing and just kill it all in 30 minutes? I can't even think of this anymore so I will just stop writing. Thank you for the review I agree with all you said.
