Right before she asks him to kiss her there is a Whistledown line about how people act dangerously when they have lost hope. It wasn't a manipulation--she actually had lost all hope and it was like she had nothing left to lose.

I personally love that in comparison to previous couples who had more time before they kissed Colin and Pen kissed that early. I mean it's the kiss that makes Colin see her in a different way. It needed to happen here
Yeah def not looking for pity with that kiss. Pen really feels like she’ll never find someone. Did you guys notice that Penelope basically outed herself to colin? She said it would have been suspicious if lady whistledown hadnt reported on what happened. Thats a really weird thing for a person to say unless they were whistledown. Im surprised none of them caught it
I noticed that too and agree it was weird but not necessarily a giveaway. Like let's say two big name actors broke up and TMZ was talking all about it. "It's so rude of TMZ to talk about that celebrity couple's breakup." "Everyone was talking about it, it would have been suss if TMZ of all outlets *wasnt* talking about it." Because it would have been honestly. It was certainly notable and I'd be thinking "okay weird defense Pen" but the logic that rags aren't morally responsible for reporting rumors about invasive, personal details of celebs because they're only discussing what everyone else is already speculating about is used all the time. I don't agree with it but it's a common justification.
I personally find it adorable how she plays off as an anonymous writer that can humiliate or call someone out through her scandal pamphlets but sucks as a socialist and in attempts for find a suitor for marriage
I think it was just Pen's negative self-talk in written form, not a manipulation. I mean, come on, what woman hasn't felt that way at some point (or many points) in their life? That they're not pretty enough or cool enough or smart enough. That they're just worse than all the other women and so they shouldn't expect positive attention or good things. Pen was just being honest about how she views herself.
Yeah, that was a wild assumption. It was basically a kiss to give up on him. Almost a 'i'll ask this because he's someone i trust and love but then that's it, i give up on him". But the boy felt.
What Penelope wrote wasn't an attempt to garner pity. She knew it was what people would want to hear and how everyone already felt about her. She's also dealing with some internalized hatred
This! The writing felt like self loathing. We are the harshest critics of ourselves. She also knew it had to be harsh after writing about Eloise and Colin.
The way i felt that kiss! I can't even speak. She was so brave for asking, it was almost of a goodbye kiss to her hopes for him but the boy felt. No, guys, she wasn't manipulating him to kiss her at all.
I have seen people call it humiliating that she “begged him”. I didn’t get that at all from this scene. I thought it was her finally asking for what she wants to close out this entire chapter of her life.
She asked him, I did not see the begging at all. I felt what she felt, I had me first kiss at 22 at some point I was like what if die never been kissed....maybe I should ask a friend. I understand asking someone you trust.
From the interview, the actress, Nicola confirmed that for Penelope, that kiss was for her to move on and accept the fact that she is ruined and will have even less chance to get married but for Colin the kiss had awakened his feelings for her that has always been there just never named.
idk if you noticed because it was so quiet (i didnt know until i looked it up) but when Pen is talking to Lord Remington (the one who loves gossip) and Colin was looking at them, an orchestra version of Jealous by Nick Jonas was playing in the background
Also, when he saw she was enjoying the conversation with Remington, his smile dropped. And then he went to her and the rest of not-so-happy reactions followed but it was all very subtle.
It’s funny you say that because in my opinion the best first kiss on tv is Nick and Jess in New Girl, and I just watched an interview with Nicola and Luke where they said they based that kiss on them.
I actually love the journal part where he writes about women, because the very end of what she reads basically says that even in that moment of "intimacy" there's no true closeness in those encounters. But then when he kisses Penelope at the end - THAT'S real intimacy and he suddenly realizes the difference.
Aside from small changes in timing and place they did the kiss scene almost exactly like the book, and I loved that so much. For Penelope it was her trying to let him go, but for him it is the spark that ignites it all.
She counts as a chaperone. Unmarried women do not walk around a city alone, especially talking to men. Being alone with Colin in the drawing room is technically not cool.
Cressida was trying to be a good friend by not being such a gossip so she didn't say anything about Pen. It was the other two girls that had overheard because Eloise had mentioned it a bit loud
9:48 > I didn’t like how in the series they made it as Colin writing about women (yes the last line was about how he didn’t feel a connection with them), but in the books was much better (since this scene is kind of from the book but modified). In the books he writes about Greece and it’s landscape with clever references to everyday stuff, like for example the water and its temperature, which later on Penelope says a bunch of compliments and in another scene she actually encourages him to write more and that he could always write as an actual publishing author (which spoilers, in the end of the book happens thanks to Penelope’s support). I feel like the series took off a lot of meaning about that scene to keep the “flirty Colin” facade…😞
Correct. It’s her maid. In Downton Abbey, she’s Anna to Mary/Edith/Sybil. Although Anna isn’t technically a Lady’s Maid until Mary marries. There are under maids too. The male counterpart to a Lady’s Maid is a Valet. It’s a very intense role, because they dress their employer daily, help bath them, fix their clothes… they’re their confident, etc. They know basically everything about their employer.
I was not expecting a kiss that soon that was bold of penolepe to ask I’m hooked after that kiss and it looked like Colin was as well makes it a lot more interesting knowing pen is lady whistle down
It isn’t manipulation for Pen. She honestly believes in this moment that her life is over as she believes it to be. She doesn’t think a kiss from Colin will lead to anything, and it’s sort of a goodbye for her to him and too society. This was just the final straw for Colin when it comes to realizing as to why he always seeks her out and cares for her. That he loves her and probably has always loved her. Plus that scene is straight out of the books and Pen really doesn’t want anything except to experience a kiss with the only person she’s ever loved. This was also a big step for her as a character because she’s never told him what SHE wants straight out, and this kinda goes back to their conversation in season 2 where she tells him that she wants to be both witty and brave.
She was a mistress though. Society still looked down on her pretty strongly. Anthony wouldn’t be criticized, especially as a viscount. Meanwhile the 2 that were in this episode WERE prostitutes. Men going to brothels in those days were very normal, and simply not spoken of in polite society. More like Men’s clubs. If I remember right, the brothel is named in the books.
Man they said during press that this season would be extra romantic and they DELIVERED. The setting and lighting for that garden kiss looked downright Shakespearean
This episode they had Dynamite, but in episode 1 they did “abcdefu” by GAYLE, which was playing when Pen got her “glow up reveal” at Danbury’s ball in her dark green dress (because it was Pen saying “f*ck you” to the ton). 🙂
I have forgotten how much I love watching Bridgerton with you guys. Ya'll are adorable!! Can't wait for the rest of the episodes. Keep up the great work guys!
Pen was definitely just feeling those things about herself and having an existential crisis. In the books he hates that she says thank you because he likes the kiss and he hates she thinks he did it out of pity and I feel like show Colin would be the same there.
Colin Bridgerton kissed Penelope Featherington. And it was glorious. His lips touched hers softly at first, not because he was trying to be gentle, although if he'd had the presence of mind to think about such things, it probably would have occurred to him that this was her first kiss, and it ought to be reverent and beautiful and all the things a girl dreams about as she's lying in bed at night. But in all truth, none of that was on Colin's mind. In fact, he was thinking of quite little. His kiss was soft and gentle because he was still so surprised that he was kissing her. He'd known her for years, had never even thought about touching his lips to hers. And now he couldn't have let her go if the fires of hell were licking his toes. He could barely believe what he was doing-or that he wanted to do it so damned much. It wasn't the sort of a kiss one initiates because one is overcome with passion or emotion or anger or desire. It was a slower thing, a learning experience-for Colin just as much as for Penelope. And he was learning that everything he thought he'd known about kissing was rubbish. Everything else had been mere lips and tongue and softly murmured but meaningless words. This was a kiss. There was something in the friction, the way he could hear and feel her breath at the same time. Something in the way she held perfectly still, and yet he could feel her heart pounding through her skin. *This was more than a kiss*
um they are the main black characters and this is the era of "woke" they will be the leads of the show and heads of house bridgerton at some point. (im only 90 percent kidding)
Am I the only one who thinks the timing is kinda off this season and has like 10 other storylines that we don’t need😭 I feel like we didn’t get enough of Polin
Pen wrote about herself because what happened at the ball was very public, it would’ve been weird if Whistledown didn’t comment on it. But she really thinks what she wrote about herself as LW. She truly thinks she won’t ever find a husband.
Lady Featherington really pisses me off. She writes off Pen, then scolds her for seeking help to find a husband. If she had put in a fraction of the effort she did for her two other daughters towards Penelope she wouldn't have needed to seek out help from a friend in the first place.
Many people make that mistake, but a drawing room isn't a room where people actually draw. It's the short version of "withdrawing room", where the people living there withdraw to, sometimes with close friends or family. Basically it's like a living room but more intimate/not for everyone to go into.
Loved how you are so enthusiastic about Bridgerton season 3. Hit the LIKE button so hard at your reaction to Pen's glow-up reveal in the last episode! And this one when you were like he better kiss her! Can't wait to see you guys react to the rest!
I’m rewatching reactions while waiting for part 2 to be released and I know you won’t see this because it’s been a few weeks, but I feel like I need to defend my boy Colin and his journals. While yes he’s writing about women he’s been with, he’s actually writing about how lonely he feels. It’s edited badly because he interrupts Penelope but he writes that he can’t believe how physically close he can be with these women but still feel so distant. He’s trying to find a connection and doesn’t succeed until the kiss with Penelope. I think that’s why the shift is so quick for him. He’s been looking for an emotional connection for months with no success and one small kiss from Penelope and he’s feeling everything that was missing earlier. It changed his entire outlook.
I love Penelope, but I honestly just didnt get the love for Colin. They took a formerly likeable character and turned him into a sleaze. I hate how they make nearly every guy in this show a wh*re.

Pen was definitely just feeling those things about herself and having an existential crisis. In the books he hates that she says thank you because he likes the kiss and he hates she thinks he did it out of pity and I feel like show Colin would be the same there.
Let me quote the book for a second... Let me tell you what Colin is thinking 😅😅😅
...
*This was more than a kiss*
them talking about mr. & mrs. mondrich's side plot: "i'm wondering how this is going to tie into the main story"
me: it doesn't lol
um they are the main black characters and this is the era of "woke" they will be the leads of the show and heads of house bridgerton at some point. (im only 90 percent kidding)
Yoooo Anthony was sleeping with an opera singer all first season. Not a sex worker. But yes, men don’t have to wait. Only women do.
The way Phillipas actress delivered that line
Drawing Room comes from Withdrawing. It means it's the Family Room.
Am I the only one who thinks the timing is kinda off this season and has like 10 other storylines that we don’t need😭 I feel like we didn’t get enough of Polin
"She's good with words, just not saying them."
Penelope, standing for anxious yammering wallflowers everywhere!
Pen wrote about herself because what happened at the ball was very public, it would’ve been weird if Whistledown didn’t comment on it. But she really thinks what she wrote about herself as LW. She truly thinks she won’t ever find a husband.
fun fact, the actrees who plays francesca apparently learned how to play the piano, bc she thought it was a really important part of her character
You would already be dead 🤣!
Best line this episode.😂
The best kiss ❤❤❤
I had the same thought as Zuff when Colin cut his hand.
thank you for uploading episode 2 so quickly 🙌🏻
Fastest reaction ever, I could have watched another hour. 😅
Remember Sienna was an opera singer, not a sex worker! Just his mistress
dynamite stans rise🌸
i love so much how y'all reacted to dynamite 😭
This feels like ASMR, they talk so calmly.
Rob vibing to a BTS song is not something I was expecting to see today but im living for it!! Great reaction guys, thanks for sharing :)
im shocked guys u haven't laughed when she said " inserts himself where " for me it ended me lol they were like married for two years in the story 🤣🤣
Y’all are getting these out so fast!!! I’m so happy! ❤
LMAOOO NO BC I WAS THE SAME WAY WHEN DYNAMITE CUT OFF SO QUICKLY 😭
Had my sister begging in the doorway 😭 girl stand up
Loved how you are so enthusiastic about Bridgerton season 3.
