Just so this doesn't spread too far, one wears "sneakers" on their feet, not "snickers", which is a type of candy bar. Although candy bars on one's feet could catch on. Specifically sneakers are athletic shoes, tennis shoes, or canvas shoes, not dress shoes. Sneakers also have soft soles and are quiet, so you can sneak up on someone. Hence the name.
