  • A rare and important find has been unearthed in the Cotswold District. Two Roman cavalry swords along with remnants of their wooden scabbards and fitments were discovered by Glenn Manning during a metal detectorist rally in the north of the Cotswolds. There was also a broken copper alloy bowl discovered with the weaponry.

The Roman military wouldn't have hidden two swords, but those swords had definitely fallen into the hands of someone who did want to hide them. Perhaps part of an Anti-Roman rebellion?

@@dwh5512 Of course it is. Why do you think an army would go to the effort of hiding two swords? Couldn't they have put them in a wagon? Why would the tribes want to hide two swords? Amy theories?

I find it it an impressive discovery regarding the spatha and one still has the scabbard !! Has it resisted so long because of it's high quality?

Um - I hesitate to nit-pick, but here goes anyway! If a thing is "unique" it means it's the only one of its kind - thus it cannot be "two of only four" of anything, as these two gorgeous and exciting swords are described here. I know language has to evolve, but sloppiness in language goes against the true purpose of language: to communicate accurately.

the find is unique, not the actual swords. like, a hoard of coins might be found.....the find is unique, but it encompasses a bunch of coins. i dunno.... maybe ?!

Right on point, language is getting really sloppy, half the time you have to know demographic groups to assimilate what aome people are saying.
BTW, gorgeous and exciting swords? If I passed them by visiting a provincial museum it's because I didn't find them so.

What did the Romans do for us ? Reace, stability, roads, baths . . . in short, civilisation.

@@lawrencejames8011 Romans were not first to introduce Roads and baths. They have been around since Uruk & Indus valley civilisations. The Romans just made extensive use of them.
I doubt the subjected peoples of the times would view the Romans as civilised or with any positivity given the fact that throughout the history of Roman empire, it had to countlessly suppress uprising

They weren't buried in the North of the Cotswolds. The Cotswolds didn't exist when those swords were buried.

OK... so the "find" proves something... but why would you bother displaying two rusty pieces of deteriorated metal? of what visual value and worth is there... why would I even pay more than $25 dollars U.S. to show a piece of rust?.. Now find an intact clean sward, even if it's dull and tarnished and I'd pay $500,000 if I had it... that would be work owning and showing...
