I love the part after 9:55 this reminds of the old German glory, of knights, of virtues, of old legends and heroes. The songs of Wagners show the German spirit in the best possible way.
I’m practicing as 1st horn player in my amateur orchestra :P Much stamina is needed, but this tune gives me goose bumps and makes tears in my eyes. I can’t deny that our playing is just mimicry of what German people can do, because we can’t understand how they feel inside their souls. However, it is really interesting to think about the past of Germany and Christian world while I play this. From Japan :3

Tannhaüser is what got me hooked on Wagner... but i've always resisted the interpretive dichotomy of eros versus agape, of "good" versus "bad" love. This is too trite for Wagner. Oddly enough Pope Benedict's encyclical, Deus Caritas Est, points towards a better interpretation. In that encyclical Benedict discussed the "ascent" from eros to higher and "spiritual" forms of love. Moving away from puritanical moralizing, he posited human love as involving a psychological development. Eros is not an "opposite" of "true love" but a necessary first step towards it. Obviously Benedict was not the first to view things this way. What caught me was his reference to "ascending love." The motif of "ascent" is very strong in the staging of Tannhaüser. The theme is not so much a question of rejecting "impurities" as it is of Tannhaüser's assisted development as a human being. Wagner said of Tannhaüser that he was a "man who felt deeply the full range of human emotions."
