    I think the reason why, in American ports, that things like "Pub" and "Bar" get changed to "Cafe" is that references to alcohol contribute to a higher ESRB rating.

    • @ericthered1154
      @ericthered1154 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Could also apply to cigarettes, etc. as "Drug reference." Again, higher ESRB ratings. Especially in the early ESRB days; when parents would've been worried about exposing their children to extreme violence and such.

      I keep having new thoughts while looking at other comments. It's easy to think of things in the context of the now - people now are starting to appreciate video games and fighting censorship, but this wasn't the case back then. I say it's not about not wanting to offend people, it's about marketing.

    • @RobbyRaccoon
      @RobbyRaccoon 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Eric the Red Final Fantasy VI/III did not have an ESRB rating when it was first released, although it was later given one.

      +Eric the Red censorship is a vast improvement to games such as changing pub to cafe and it's to LOWER the ESRB rating

      The ESRB didn't exist when Final Fantasy IV and VI came out in America originally.

    "Realistic death" a 2 meter sword impaling from the sky.

    • @LeoUchiha812
      @LeoUchiha812 7 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      It's more realistic in the idea that her death was random and meaningless. Most major protagonist deaths in Final Fantasy and most games at the time were usually in the form of a sacrifice that saves others or has some benefit overall. Aeris just... died. No sacrifice, no benefit, just the bad guy killing the good guy and getting away with it.

    • @Z7Games
      @Z7Games 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Rakanadyo
      Thats how you define realistic? *Random* and *meaningless*?
      Im sorry but i prefeer the old sacrifice cliche even if i hate it over the "look im trying super hard to impress you" random shit that was Aeris death.

    • @nobuofthesixth5827
      @nobuofthesixth5827 6 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      I think he means realistic in the sense that sometimes people die and there's not always a specific reason why it had to happen it just does. Most devs at the time just wanted to make successful games and would cater to their audiences making the most cliche shit possible. I imagine the move to kill her senselessly pissed off a lot of people, and it was something not a lot of devs at the time would do. He literally wasn't trying to impress, he just wanted his fans to feel what he was feeling at the time, and it pretty much worked. FF7 is still one of the best, if not the best, in the FF series.

    • @gmoney66
      @gmoney66 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It is very realistic, when you take into account the fact that this is a franchise where a guy could suplex a train.

    • @Cheerybelle

      The lack of the full embracing of realism is not mutually exclusive with, in general, the idea of realism.

    I know this video is ancient at this point, but it is going to bug me unless I say it.
    The series was originally going to be called Fighting Fantasy, but that name was already taken by a series of "Chose your Own Adventure" style books. They wanted to keep the alliteration and went with Final Fantasy instead. Sakaguchi has been quoted as saying, "To be sure, we had our backs to the wall when we were developing Final Fantasy. But really, anything that started with an F would have been fine for the title.”

      John Oliver b/c the game was made for a bigger audience. Its an action game adventure thats nothing young teens shouldnt see. thats like making mario M just so they can see peach's breast.

    • @holyflygon
      @holyflygon 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Oliver an option settings wont help b/c kids can turn that off super easily and that cost way more money to make a whole another game just so teens can look at a character naked? people would complain that its useless DLC there is no way to fix censorship then to have each country deal with it. The US censored the nuke launcher in fallout and changed the name to avoid conflict.

    • @holyflygon
      @holyflygon 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Oliver ok but i think most censorship works to make the majority happy which would be the parents who don't want kids to see nudity or get the option. They wont cater for the minority who doesn't care or wants the original.

    To bad they gave JonTron an incorrect script. As the name "Final Fantasty" was not named because Hironobu was going to quit the industry. The confirmed insider information was because Square was going to go bankrupt and this game was going to be its "Swan Song" (as it was to far in development to cancel). Every game developed after the first had a Number afterwards because it may very well be their last and each one (excluding direct sequels/prequels) are stand alone titles.

      Also wrong: The designer has stated that he wanted to call it Fighting Fantasy, but the name was trademarked to a different company/game so they changed it to Final

    • @bouncycreepy
      @bouncycreepy 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@robertmacneish4470 finally someone with correct information. Yes. While it is often believed that square named it final fantasy because it was going to be their last game, it was actually because they wanted to name it fighting fantasy, but that name was taken. While they were nearly bankrupt, there was no true indication that this had to be their last game. Final fantasy simply seemed like a name similar to the one they originally planned, so it stuck.

  • @jimmyramosf7
    @jimmyramosf7 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Here is a fact: The name FINAL FANTASY is not because it was their last chance to make a succesful game. It as really because they wanted a name with the dual use of the letter F (efu/eju, being apparently a popular thing back then in Japan). In the end, Final Fantasy was a more appealing thing.All of this according to Sakaguchi himself.

    Did you know:
    That the gameplay systems introduced in Final Fantasy II, created by Akitoshi Kawazu, were later used and perfected in the SaGa series for the Gameboy, SNES, PS1 and PS2? A similar system was also used in The Last Remnant for the X-Box 360 and PC.
    Akitoshi Kawazu also produced Final Fantasy XII, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Legend of Mana, and The Last Remnant. He was also lead game designer of Final Fantasy I & II, as well as the director of every SaGa game.

    In Final Fantasy I, there's a hidden minigame. While on the ship, hold B and mash A a bunch of times, and you'll open a sliding number puzzle. It's one of those ones where you have to slide the pieces to arrange the numbers 1 through 15 in order. If you finish it, you get gil and items, and the faster you finish it, the better reward you get. (I used to be pretty good at it; at my peak, I could do it in under a minute each time.)

    If I'm not mistaken, Final Fantasy received its name not just in part to Sakaguchi's desires but from the hex number 0xFF which translates to 8 bits (11111111) in binary (or 255 in decimal). This reflects the fact that 8 bits was the largest value accessible to any game programmer at the time, and considering the scale of the game and the amount of code that went into it, it's all too fitting that Final Fantasy's initials are FF. However, whether the initials or the name came first (in which I'm wrong or it's simply coincidence), I cannot say.

      Sakaguchi the lead designer has stated that he wanted to call it Fighting Fantasy, but the name was trademarked to a different company/game so they changed it to Fina. Because s the word "Final" was a famous word in Japan, Sakaguchi settled on that. According to Sakaguchi, any title that created the "FF" abbreviation would have done.

    Another instance of censorship was the removal of references to "praying" in FF4 and FF6. In FF4, in the Mysidian tower, they are "wishing" instead of "praying," and in FF6, in the tower of Kefka's cult, they are "thinking of him" instead of "praying to him." These were restored in the GBA versions of the games.

    The issue with the censoring is that the MPAA and ESRB are a bunch of twats and will often knock up a age rating for essentially no reason whatsoever, this is even more true when it comes to anything even implying sexuality or sexual content.

      @redneckpride4ever 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeremythellama1 It was actually Joe Leiberman and another Democrat that first made this an issue in the 90s. Another Democrat (I think it was Oklahoma, not positive) wanted to tax violent video games a few years ago.
      The false stereotype that Republicans are old men has lead to people blaming them instead of the Democratic party.

    • @kyle10590
      @kyle10590 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Some of us want to experience what the artists were made, in the original form. Not have things we must not be able to handle, change for no reason. Censorship is NOT a good thing.

    • @lunamon97
      @lunamon97 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      But changing something as literal as Bar to Pub and taking out a smoke puff is no need to say "censorship is bad!" The game devs COULD have changed the rating of the game, but since they didn't you still get their unique art. Those two pixels of cleavage that you can't see isn't something to get so worked up on like most of the people in this comment section. Censorship CAN be good so wider variety of people can play the games and too make sure certain lines aren't crossed that some people may not be comfortable with. It's one thing if they changed major plot points, but just a few graphic changed isn't a big deal.

    • @kyle10590
      @kyle10590 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      bar vs. cafe does change the meaning of the building. Those small details such as cleavage shouldn't change the rating anyway. This type of regressive thinking is all too common today. Thanks for proving it further.

      A) I was attempt to be nice and civil. No need to be an ass hat. B) if it wasn't for censorship, I wouldn't have gotten into my favorite game franchise at a young age or games in general.
      If they weren't okay changing anything, they would've changed the damn rating. They were okay with it so they can make more money, so they make more games, so they can listen more people like you bitch about how horrible the American release is because those few pixels.

    • @KennyHazy97
      @KennyHazy97 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +DasAlternativeEnde I should point out that at the time, Mortal Kombat caused an outrage for its violence. The US could've set up a government-regulated censorship board, but instead allowed a self-regulating body, the ESRB, to judge the content of games and classify their age rating. It was violence that predominantly landed videogames in hot water, not sexual content.
      And everyone in this thread is calling the examples in the video 'censorship'. It isn't, not really. Square and its localisation teams decided to make those changes themselves, the US government didn't have anything to do with it.

    From what i have heard over the years the reason the Final fantasy series got the name Final fantasy was because at the time squire was going broke and the first game of this series is what saved them from said bankruptcy. again this is what I have heard is the reason over the years.

    • @virionspiral
      @virionspiral 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In 2015, Sakaguchi explained the name's origin: the team wanted a title that would abbreviate to "FF", which would sound good in Japanese. The name was originally going to be Fighting Fantasy, but due to concerns over trademark conflicts with the roleplaying gamebook series of the same name, they needed to settle for something else. As the word "Final" was a famous word in Japan, Sakaguchi settled on that. According to Sakaguchi, any title that created the "FF" abbreviation would have done.

    • @sushiSlayr
      @sushiSlayr 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +thomas garrett (Pokemastertomm) This was back in the '80s. Proper introductions, tutorials, and deep stories were absent from games due to storage limitations, thus, players had to rely on instruction manuals. This stays true up until the 6th Generation, when the PS2 was the highlight.
      In short, Final Fantasy I isn't particularly bad, just incredibly outdated.

    It would be great if DYK could do a piece on Conker.
    About how Conker's Bad Fur Day was original supposed to be "The Twelve Tales" but it did not receive good reviews, and about his beginnings in Diddy Kong Racing. Also the differences between the original N64 version and the XBox remake. I think it would be really neat to see all of that into one colaboration.

    i wish they mad mention of the Nintendo 64 DD version of FF7. Development of Final Fantasy VII began in 1994. The game was originally intended for release on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, but was moved to the Nintendo 64. However, since the Nintendo 64's cartridges lacked the required storage capacity, Square decided to release the game for the CD-ROM based PlayStation instead. Final Fantasy VII was produced by Hironobu Sakaguchi and directed by Yoshinori Kitase.

    I believe the final version of Final Fantasy VI did in fact refer to Czar Dragon. In the cave where you find Shadow, one of the the 3 survivors talks about it saying that if someone were to destroy it then they'd be free. I felt that in destroying the 7 legendary dragons and it would've most likely made the WoR considerably more livable despite Kefka reigning as a god.

    I did, I've seen that one scene several times, Im saying is that, even though dead people float, we can also float, if we are alive, we can do it to little to no effort. And if she were alive, which is hard to believe, she'd most likely use some energy, it would make sense that there would be one last thing she'd say...that theory is unsound.

    Here's something i found about Czar Dragon that i found interesting. There's a theory going round that Square intentionally hid the boss in the games code for hackers to find, this can be noted by a part of Czar's quote "Humans and their desires! I'm free at last!" which suggests Czar was supposedly trapped in the game's code and by hacking the game the hackers have freed Czar.

    One complaint I have about Final Fantasy games (well actually adventure/ RPG games in general) is the fact that in a lot of them in order to save your game, you have to find a "save point, I prefer when you can save anytime you want. I mean what if I'm playing a game and I have to leave for work in 5 minutes but it'll take me 10 to get to the nearest save point. Leaving my console on for 8 hours is not a good idea, and shutting it off means I'll lose all my progress!

    Bonus Comment fact: Did you know the original script and design for Final Fantasy 7 was meant to include a side quest were Aeris could be revived, however do to meeting deadline, had to be cut. How close were they to finishing? Well during a handful of dialogue moments there are pauses that last a little to long to be a pause for dramatic effect. These pauses were in fact originally bits where Aeris would speak. How about that huh?
