    I used to work in a bank. Despite not having any personal involvement of loaning out money to individuals, every employee had to do the same training to be made aware what a Politically Exposed Person is, and other legal responsibilities like that. This guy either has no idea what a PEP is and the rules are when dealing with them, or else he is lying. A PEP is basically a person with power who you need to take extra care not to do them any special favours or give them any large gifts, in case it looks like you are trying to bribe them. You can still do business with them, it's just that your interactions may come under closer scrutiny.
    Also, these regulations were brought about to limit the actions of people like Sani Abacha and Muammar Gaddafi. They were not brought about to limit the actions of people like Marc Andreessen. Given how much the banks are willing to bend over backwards to give him and his ilk money, if he is still getting caught in the crossfire of regulations aimed at African dictators, that is pretty wild.

    Time for a consumer strike. Only buy necessities, learn to grow your own food or shop at local farmer's markets, drive as little as possible, shop at local stores instead of online retailers (even if you shop at local big box stores, that keeps the tax revenue in the community)

    One reason there are so "many agencies" is that there are 50 states that all do things very differently. if you want fewer federal agencies, the easiest way to achieve that is to standardize as much stuff as possible. eliminate states rights, in short :)

    I also want to point out that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau isn't just there for huge fraud cases either.
    I had a dispute with USAA about a blemish they had on my credit report. They fought tooth and nail to keep it. I filed a complaint with CFPB and in less than 30 days they brought USAA to heel on my behalf and they removed the mistake. Not sure what I would have done if they didn't exist
