    Loving Mark and Heather, such great presenters and a great chemistry. Even better that they’ve confirmed it’s ok to make massive splashes with your pool stroke!

    I want to see Katie Ledecky swimming the 5k marathon swim against the Olympic marathon swimmers to see if the slower, smoother stroke hurts her speed or not.

      @@Shevock thats 10km. WOWSA rules state that for a marathon swim to be considered so ,it must be 10k minimum. 5km is not a marathon swim. there are the non olympic championships that do 5k races , and even 25km races but the chosen olympic distance was 10km. Most likely because they wanted to do the minimum distance for convenience. Because a regular audience does not want to watch swimmers swim for 25km 😂😂

  • @nikhoward

    Haha, nice one. Even Heather’s open water stroke is still so elegant compared to Mark’s pool stroke that is still thrash metal.

    I’m always so disheartened when I see my splits in open water. I can consistently hit low 1:30s in a pool but can’t sustain faster than 1:45 in open water.

    I loved watching Lucy CB in the 1500m indoor Olympic trials earlier this year, the commentator likened her swimming action to that of a "bath toy". She was pipped at the post by only just over 100th of a second. So just shows not a lot of difference in efficiency.

    • @itarry4
      @itarry4 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 50m sprint swimmers are all starting to use the straight arm fast turn over technique as it's far more efficient over the short distance.

  • @itarry4
    @itarry4 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would you. Guess the distance matters as most sprint specialists these days use the straight arm fast turn over method. It tends to be limited to the 50m specialists but even some 100m swimmers are using it now.

  • @kevp68
    @kevp68 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Don't agree. 50 m sprinters on pool very splashy and marathon sea swimmers tend to be smooth and efficient

    Interesting video for sure. One question and just curious, not hating, but Heather, I noticed on your right hand that sometimes when you enter the water, one of your fingers bends. Is that on purpose or just something that happens? Thanks!

    I find pool swim is closer to a catch up type stroke, therefore more rotation and better distance per stroke, OWS not so much- less rotation and less distance per stroke

    #gtncoachescorner Hi GTN, I've got a question regarding swimming and doing weights and strength training outside of the pool. Would you advise triathletes to do weight sessions replacing swimming to build upper body strength or is it all about the amount of hours in the pool to improve my times?

    • @flynnifyable
      @flynnifyable 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heather did a video about that. Go to the gym.

    • @jamiefuhrman403
      @jamiefuhrman403 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Combination of both, strength training serves as a great compliment to swim/bike/run workouts. And if you don't have access to a pool, it's quite easy to replicate the body movements in the gym.

    I notice that all pro triathletes breathe every other stroke on the same side. I am a bilateral breather and a slower swimmer(1:45/100) and find it impossible to breath that much. I takes me 3 strokes to exhale all my breathe. How do pro’s breathe that much/quickly when they are going so much faster?

    • @bri-tri
      @bri-tri 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rg7035well when i swim faster, with increased stroke rate, the time between the strokes is decreased so i am breathing more. If i try to breathe every two strokes i end up hyperventilating. If anyone has any helpful answers to this question that would great!

    • @rg7035
      @rg7035 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bri-tri You should exhale slowly through your nose when in the water, then just before you take a breath you exhale all the air that is left in one burst (still underwater and through the nose).
