I don't blame Punpun for Aiko's mother... I blame him for how manipulative and toxic he was to Aiko afterwards and almost comitting to murdering her.

u might have lost the whole point of the story punpun was manipulative yes but only that doesnt make someone stay aiko was also manipulative and wanted him even if it wasnt something healthy for anyone truth is the whole story revolves around 2 people who were broken from the start but tried to hold onto something just so life made sense

Did you read the manga? Punpun was basically mentally ruined at the point he got with Aiko. His life was basically hell that he didn’t even want to live in and he was only living for that glimpse of hope that was Aiko. When he realized she was normal he went insane. I swear it’s so funny when normies expect the severely mentally person who was abused, raped, and manipulated to act normal.

I find that panel of Punpun looking back at his dad in the distance saying “I love you”, to be the saddest and most heartbreaking in the whole manga. It’s just the realness of the situation and how many times I’ve looked back as someone became just a dot in my vision knowing it would likely be the last time I saw them in my life. That image of Punpun’s dad brought me to tears cause it brought me back to those moments. Oyasumi Punpun’s characters FEEL like real people who I’ve met in my life

i’m currently reading Berserk right after i finished reading goodnight punpun (i’m trying to go down my manga bucket list lol) and let me tell u it has been a roller coaster 😭😭
While both are a celebration of humanity, they each show a drastically different, but equally valuable and true, side.
Goodnight punpun shows people who ultimately give into their circumstances, while berserk shows people who resist it.

For me Sachi finding Punpun was also my favorite moment in the story because when Punpun gets saved by Sachi and continues to live. It reminds me of the people who I can go to when I’m not myself and who can make me feel better about things.

that's an interesting way of viewing it, because the creator actually chose this ending because he felt his original idea (punpun dying) was too "clean" of an ending, too easy. he thought it would be more painful for him to have to live with everything.

i- okay this is my opinion, but in my eyes, aiko was a victim of her surroundings. you can’t just hate aiko for what she “did” to punpun. as u said, punpun did it to himself. aiko also was a victim of punpun’s dark mind.

I might’ve said different in the video, but I don’t hate Aiko as a character, I more hate her and Punpun together and what they did to each other. I sympathize with her greatly, and love her as a character just not with Punpun in any way

I feel like one of the most disturbing things about Punpun’s killing of Aiko’s mother is how easily he fell off any sort of restraint after that. After given absolute confirmation of what he believed, to an extent that the world was cruel and he needed to be, he immediately gave up any sense of morality. The most uncomfterable thing about that scene to me is that if given a “just cause” in our minds, everything about our world view can seem confirmed and true.

I feel Goodnight Punpun is the greatest piece of fiction I have ever read. Mostly due to the fact some of the concepts depicted in the manga are somethings I went through. (Excluding the NSFW stuff) but mostly the abuse and torment he and Aiko go through. I feel the depictions displayed are incredibly accurate as to how they would turn out and the results of which are uncannly realistic. In the end I was praying for this to all be a dream of sorts and Punpun and Aiko would go back to a more happy life... But that would not be reality and in my opinion a good story to tell. I love this story with all my heart.

so so so so underrated bro. Subbed! I have actually never written a long ass youtube comment before but I guess feel compelled now.
I finished the manga a few nights ago and it’s taken a bit for things to settle in. To be honest, after finishing it, I was confused as to why everyone was hypin the shit out of it. “It changed my life.” Or “It’s definitely a masterpiece.” I didn’t agree after finishing but like you said at the end, it’s cause most of us have experienced similar things to Punpun or at least experienced events with similar effects on us as people. I think that’s why my initial reaction to finishing the story was the same as my reaction to experiencing traumatic events in my own life: denial and dissociation lowkey - just unable to process anything. And I was slowly coming to your other conclusion that we reach for stories and fantasies like manga for ESCAPE but when it’s something so disturbing that can resemble our actual lives, it pulls you outta that dream in such a jarring and abrupt way.
So well, it actually is helping me out this damn deep and dark pit I’ve been stuck in for a long minute. I have more to digest about this and its relevance to my life, but thank you. I’ve been avoiding processing bc of the sheer overpowering discomfort but you said so much of what I am coming to realize - and I know you meant it all too. I want to hope again. And make sure I can hold onto it this time.
Thank you. Wishing yall the best. Oyasumi, yall .

Then I came across this video and MAN it makes me feel a whole lot better overall. This is particularly because I love that you dug right into the most painful parts which I kept on avoiding coming to terms with - the murder and the suicide. The thing i loved the most of the video is that our thoughts are very near to be opposite. I can hardly empathize with manga so Aikos mothers death meaned anything to me. Also the way you see Punpun separation with Aiko is very different, I think Punpun although he could have a happy life with Sachi his main pourpose in life is being with Aiko so I see now that Punpun is empty.

    ...
Midori R*PED him. There is a limit to how much you can say "imperfect people who made a mistake". After that she said something like "see it as a gift". She is a horrible person and I really didn't want to continue after that to see her and Yuuichi's stupid story and their baby, it truly disgusted me (as a girl. For me that chapter that she forced herself on a helpless teenager who trusted her, was the part that traumatized me the most in this manga)

That part of the manga is one of the parts that definitely makes me the most uncomfortable, and hard to make my point clear, so I absolutely agree with you. Generally all of these people are not good in most respects, and I do find it hard to fit Midori into that over arching theme.

I think calling what punpun feels for Aiko „love“ is completely wrong. He was obsessed with her bc of his childhood trauma. Punpun does not love himself therefore he cannot know what love really feels like. When Aiko kills herself, it is heartbreaking not bc he loses the love of his life, but bc he no longer has a sense of self. He lost the thing that kept him going… the obsession with the idea of a girl that was already gone for a long long time.

I'm super late but something people seem not to know is that the plot actually references and old myth about a cowherd and a weaver girl which corresponding to stars. They festival so dear to Aiko (who worked in a textile factory...) is a festival related to this specific legend.
The horns Punpun grows aren't demon horns but cow horns because he's the cowherd in this story.
Two lovers separated. Two stars which only join on a specific time of the year.
But there's more: an interpretation is that Punpun, Aiko and Sachi, more than a weird love triangle are all aspects of the author's life, parts of himself.
Aiko would be his past works which he felt dragged him down
Punpun would be the way the author tells us how confusing and depressing life can be
And Sachi would be his passion as a mangaka pushing him forward but sometimes being rough on him
Heck, Sachi's child not being Punpun's may be a reference to how due to many interventions by editors the author felt like some of his previous works weren't his own anymore.

I would say the ending can have a lot of interpretation. But I would love to think the same as you.
Cause that's a true escape and a way to a normal or better life.
Maybe Sachi after hearing what others think of him, she could get to understand Punpun better.
But what if it's just another pit... Sachi haven't saved him cause she felt responsible or guilty, but to put Punpun back to his "role" in her life. In this context "You're mine and mine alone" has a hugely different vibe to it.

Wow I didn’t even think that of all the horrible stuff I’ve seen on the internet in my life, reading this at times still left me feeling more disturbed. Fantastically written

Wow. Honestly, thank you so much. I read Oyasumi Punpun about 5 or 6 years ago, and the way it stick with me is something I cannot describe: it's just every possible adjective at once. It's gruesome, complicated, but at the same time, so real and so well put together. It's incredible how many of us feel just the same way you described you felt about this story. It definitely ruined me too, and till this day, whenever I see something related to it, I feel an atrocious emptiness.. But at the same time, I'm so grateful for having taken the time to read it from start to finish, because it changed me. Maybe the scariest thing about Punpun, and the way we all feel a pain in the gut when we incorporate it into our lives, is exactly what you mentioned: the fear of having to live with flaws, and vulnerable to whatever could happen with us in the process of living, just like Punpun: we saw him descend into the darkest place possible, and everything as a consequence of circumstances that could perfectly be real.
Just like you, I haven't been able to reread this story, even though I did end up adoring it. With your video, I still don't think I can manage to pull that off, but I'm definitely closer to someday do that. I think it's because after watching it, I sorta made peace with the story, and with the all of it's rawness and realness. With accepting that this story is what it is because it shows how terrible life can be and how much it can mess up with us... But still, life goes on. And there it always hope.
    Thank you again :)

I absolutely love and appreciate your thoughts. It’s really touching knowing everyone agrees and sees this story the same way I do, and I’m glad you’re feeling better about the story and grateful I could help with that. Thank you!

It's been a year since you've posted this video so I'm sure you won't see this. I just finished reading Oyasumi Punpun and was trying to find a YT video to fill the hole that Oyasumi Punpun left me and to move on. Your video was too well written it was like you were reading my mind and mentioning the things that I wanted to express. Thank you for this video. You earned a subscriber!

Unpopular Opinion: I didnt really like this manga. So many people told me it was good, so many people told me it was sad, and I read through it feeling a bit disappointing. I never felt sad, angry, happy, scared. I feel like the only real emotion it activated was shock when PunPun would blurt out the most random shit or take off Aikos shirt. The last maybe 20 chapters with Aiko and PunPun were kind of interesting but also dissapointing. Ive never seen a book try so hard to be sad. It was misery porn, but with such a bad resolution that the pussy looks like pieces of meat and the dick looks like a thin wooden block.
