Nobody quite understands my love for this piece. At least no one I know personally…like, it hurts how much I love it and how just utterly perfect it is at capturing what the intention of the whole movie is. Whimsical yet bittersweet, it’s just…*chefs’ kiss* And MY GOD, did I ever love seeing a score reduction of it! Horner was truly a gift to film scoring, I still tend to think he’s under appreciated ❤️❤️❤️ And your own description at the start is just perfection, subbed and fantastic work! I have to ask, is this your own transcription just from listening in great detail? Transcribing and arranging is a skill I wish I had, but my brain and ears are very “big picture” oriented, so I tend to miss what others will pick up when they can listen with such specific detail. Either way, this is just incredible, and just wonderful to see a childhood favorite laid out ‘on paper’ like this 😍😍😍
I know exactly how you feel. This movie alone had such a strong and lasting impact on my life. I loved the movie so much I changed my legal last name to McFadden and eventually when we can afford to get through immigration after not seeing each other for 8 years, my fiancé from NZ and I are going to get married. I thought about using this song for our first dance even though there are no lyrics, it encapsulates that special moment between two souls.
a lovely score, not just this wonderful piece. Horner made some real gems, from subdued scores like Casper to exciting 'loud' scores like Krull (which also had gentle parts in it). Cocoon, Titanic, Glory, The Rocketeer, Braveheart, Star Trek 2+3, Dad, The land before Time, An American Tail,, Legends of the Fall,... all classic masterpieces. One of the last masters of film music.
It's that piano ostinato pattern at the top and the wind ostinato pattern at the bottom. Mournful conversation back and forth, lots of variations on it with string/choir harmony. Great example of call/response, best music is really built around a simple distinct pattern that evolves with help of harmony.
Awesome! Very clear and concise, and easy to follow. This is one of my favorites. Yesterday, was blasting all my favorite Horner cues in his Memory. I started doing reductions again recently, a la Williams sketch style and Just found your channel. Looking fwd to more, Thanks
Bleeping beautiful, sir. Yes, Horner borrowed from, Peter and the Wolf, but Horner's own version is beautiful. The call and response, the playfulness of the woodwinds, it's all there to represent the child in Casper that has never died. Even though this is elegiac in nature, due to the idea of a child's death, it is also beautiful in the innocence of the child. Also, this type of scoring is so rarely done in today's films. Woodwinds, for some reason, have been quite silent in film scores of today. I can't figure out why, either. Williams is also a brilliant master at orchestrating for Woodwinds. As a composer myself, graduating with a Master in Music for Film and Television, my identity is through thematic material, and using the timbres of the instruments to their greatest impact to tell the stories through music. While I understand the trend in minimal music, and creating soundscapes, and lots of electronics (today's trend in film scoring), I will try and deliver on a more melodic driven approach.
Great work! I miss James Horner's presence in film music. He is greatly missed!
