Dad moved us to a 300 acre farm in the Ozarks of Mo. in the Spring of 59 and I, a city boy got to handle Dad's feeder pig program. He put in about 160 acres of yellow dent corns and got a crib full. I was feeding hard shelled corn to the pastured pigs each day. Dad noticed a lot of feed was passing through the pigs undigested. So, he provided me a #3 wash tub and I soaked the shelled corn for about 3 days then started feeding the swollen corn. Sure enough we quit seeing undigested corn in their waste. And the feed conversion went up. We never fed corn mash though. I fed out Dad's cattle and his hogs. I really enjoyed messing with those pigs and watching them top out. They gained so fast they had to sit down at the feed trough.
When my Mom was a girl during the prohibition era one of her cousins made up a wooden barrel of beer and buried it in the woods. He asked Mom if she wanted to see his beer and when they got there the woods hogs had rooted the lid off and there were drunk hogs staggering all over the place.
Thank you for the inspiration! We bought our farm two year’s ago and it’s taking time but finally bought our pigs yesterday. It’s a little scary but this helped out my mind at ease for sure. GBY and again thank you for time on videos helping us just starting.

Lots of really great info ! I wanted to see drunk pigs lol . I remember my grandpa would add water his ground feed and called it slopping the hogs . He fed it right away and it didn't sit around . Thanks for sharing !
It is a blessing how much you guys have helped us since I started watching. We really do appreciate all the information you’ve put out there. I kinda fell off the Friday night live it’s been a hectic summer. Everything is wrapping up for the season for us now. Things are crazy as ever yet around our farm though butchering 6 pigs on Saturday, 60 chickens Sunday with 6 inches of snow and 20 degree weather outta be an experience! Don't feel bad about the lives we have been too busy ourselves ,snow and cold are two things we don't have much trouble with but I bet it makes life harder !

Don’t know hog farming but can relate to a bright guy that didn’t learn what he knows from a book. The young guys used to come to me for info and the engineers without an ego problem would ask me questions.
I love your saying at the end one of the most inspirational quotes I have ever heard. I have also raised hogs for a while I like color in my hogs. I have cross hogs now.
I've got some pure bred Durocs and some crossed three or four ways . It's hard to beat these cross pigs in that topping pen ! My grand mama used to tell us that daily , I looked it up once it's a scotch Irish proverb
My dad used to plant part of our farm in field corn for our on use but after it got to hard he'd fence it in put one or two calves on it and about 10 to 20 feeder pigs the calves would harvest the corn and the hogs would clean up behind the calves. Usally this was on about 2 acres of the home 40 ditchbank which was gumbo mostly
We used to hog down corn and sweet potatoes and graze them on peas and sougram but nowadays with the liability issues it's not worth the risk and it's too expensive to fence in

I’m from Hites Run Kentucky, I have ten acres linked to my family farm and I’ve been planning to get a start on raising some hogs to sell to friends to eat. Ive got my dads barn he raised hogs in back in the late 80’s early 90’s til the market fell out. I’m aiming to buy four gilts and a boar pig when they’re weaned and raise them up. I wanted to eat two of the gilts and have the other two bred by 7 months old. I’d discussed with my uncle to plant 4 acres of corn so I can mix my own feed to make the pocket money on the pigs I sell. But since the grain prices especially corn are sky high and it cost an arm and a leg just to have seed planted and fertilized, I found myself in a situation that when all is said and done I may not be able to break even if the grain prices don’t go down. So I decided on just going ahead and cleaning up the above ground section of dad’s barn and clean up and clear the saplings and build my outside pens this year and settle for two gilts to eat this year and wait til next year to buy, breed and raise hogs or whenever the best opportunity comes. Prices of grain fluctuate so much it’s kind of a waiting game but I ain’t one to take such risks unless I’m 100% sure of myself to move forward with anything. Farming is made up of risks and gambles but I want to play it smart the best I can by waiting and easing into it. Do you think I made the right decision?
Corns dirt cheap the last couple of years . A good rule of thumb is 400.00 an acre in cost not counting harvest so most of the time you can grow your own cheaper than you can buy it . Biggest thing is being able to get a good price for pigs and or pork if you have to sell at market price you'll lose your butt , it's a gamble no doubt just start small, build a market and get bigger as you can move more animals. I would recommend starting with a bred sow or two instead of raising stock it's much more economical

@@HomesteadingtheHardWay back when I was 15 Pappaw bought 5 meat hogs we kept down in his old barn and I couldn’t wait to take care of them and I learned a lot then and now being 27 and married for 4 months I find there’s so much more to learn as ya go in general haha. But hog farming is in my blood goin back 4 generations or more. In 1966 My Pappaw sold a bunch of hogs and had enough money to put a down payment on a brand new chevy pickup and payed off the doctor bills for when my dad was born Two weeks later. Course that was back in the good ole days. But my daddy was raising hogs when I was born and if anything I’m wanting to carry on that tradition.

Tried it both ways except I added yeast 👍. Grew up getting bakery left overs putting in fifty five gallon barrels and soaking it with water to keep it from going moldy.feed it in the afternoon after they have gotten grain in morning, The mix of breed and sweets can ferment and give them a snoot full. Would love to meet you and set down and talk tractors, farming and hogs.

If you have a way to harvest that could work but if you have pay someone it might be cheaper to buy directly from a farmer . I've had some success selling deer corn on the cob and buying shelled corn . Cob corn sells for twice as much here
Now when making mash you add corn and molasses. But do you add water as well? Getting into raising hogs for our freezer and to sell to friends and family for their freezer. So trying to learn as much as we can. We got them on hog feed but always looking for something to supplement their feed. But good info in your videos.
Cover the corn with about 6 inches of water and you need gallon of molasses or 2.5 lbs of sugar to the barrel . Don't feed to much a pound or two a pig on top of the feed is plenty
@@That_rottenguy it doesn't have to be exact , I'd put about half a pint to a bucket and 20 lbs of corn fills it up to the bottom ring . You just need something for the yeast to feed on

Figured I could try it out in Home Depot buckets for my pigs first and make sure they eat it before going all out so trying 50 lbs as we speak with the water and sugar mix. @@mr.skeptical3071 just a 14 to 16 percent protein hog feed is fine . Weaned pigs won't eat but a pound or so or less a day apiece for the first couple of weeks . Don't overdo the protein it'll cause scours
Don't know if it can go bad really as far as the pigs eating it . It'll just start stinking bad enough you want it gone if you let the alcohol content drop to low , fermented and rotten definitely have a different smell
You can feed it to anything big enough to chew it up . If the alcohol content right it'll last a long time if not it'll just sour and stink but you can still feed it unless it starts turning black
Do you think 12.50 a 50 lb bag of hog finish is a good deal its our local feed store. I'm thinking about raising 4 hog 2 for me and 2 to sell to make some money back on feed.

I think starting with two meat hogs would be a fine idea , get yourself used to dealing with hogs

Beer is about what that mash equels , most of the alcohol is in the juice . Lol she gave them a bucket FULL !

You help ALOT! I have a bunch of pour on ivomec for cattle, will it work on pigs in a correct ratio? I heard it will.
Pour on won't work on pigs it won't absorb through their skin . We tried it didn't do anything, best way is an injection next is the paste

Have you heard of the soaked corn with some apple cider vinegar? If so do you know the amount of cider
Some people put a quart to 30 gal with a few lbs of suppliment
What do you think about feeding distiller grain silage?
Brewers grain is really good just don't feed it exclusively, you can substitute it for half the feed ration or top dress with a supplement

Where did you get that tin feeder from or what's the name of it.
That one's from the 60s holds one ton , Hog Slat sells new ones 1000.00 to 1500.00 depending on size

@@HomesteadingtheHardWay so that’s for 250 lbs if feed correct? I’m doing my mixture in 5 gallon buckets so I’d change that ratio to that per bucket.

Do you think 12.50 a 50 lb bag of hog finish is a good deal its our local feed store. I'm thinking about raising 4 hog 2 for me and 2 to sell to make some money back on feed.
That's not too bad it's 13.45 here right now . Try to sell them processed and that will work fine . I would suggest selling them ahead of time
