    Awesome information, I've been using yeast to start the fermentation of corn and theybseem to love it.
    I like that you use a starter from previous fermentation as to keep it regular.

      Yeast fermentation results in alcohol production. So no doubt they would love it😄. The alcohol content wouldn’t be very much after a 24 hour fermentation.
      Whereas bacterial fermentation results in acidic products. Just wetting the feed will result in fermentation from bacteria and yeast that are naturally present the goal is to get the lactic acid producing bacteria to be the dominant organisms doing the fermentation. Which is why I used the milk to enrich the feed with a source of lactose and presumably lactobacillus organisms found in the raw milk.

      @SweetBriarFarmMichigan The reason that I use yeast is because I have read it helps with amino acids. When I have it readily available i pick up expired milk from the store and ferment in the batch as well

    Nice to know all that! It also helps to keep them from dehydration when their body has to use fluids to digest the dry food. Not to mention inhaling the dust from the dry food. Thanks for a great video! I love to learn something new every day!

    Do you keep Kunes as well? How much mash do they get for feeders and breeders? I think I overfeed everything!!

      We have kunekune as well. We haven’t been feeding them the fermented feed. We had one with dry skin and she was rubbing her beautiful hair off 😂so we buy a bag of purina 16% sow feed and mix in about 3/4 of a bag of alfalfa pellets and a skin supplement we get from tractor supply. I think it is mostly flax seed. But we give our 3 kunekune a scoop of that 2 times a day divided between the 3 of them. Our Rolland was over weight but he slimmed down since doing this feed. I am sure they would do just fine on the fermented feed we just had the dry skin issue on the one but her hair has grown back.

      @@SweetBriarFarmMichigan okay well even then mine each get 1 Tractor Supply scoop (3 quarts) per day, and it sounds like we can cut back, especially with the scraps we feed. Plus they do eat grass. Thanks for your help!

    Can you share the papers and studies you referred to? I'm curious about the difference between starting with raw milk vs just water. (Which is what I see others using. Also in the difference in fermenting for 12-24 hours vs longer times.
    How much raw milk did you use to start with your first batch?

      Here is one. Starting with water would be fine. I used maybe a quart of raw milk when I started it then the rest water.

    Mike I've been feeding my hens fermented feed from whey. Is that good bacteria or should I be using raw milk. Second question when can I start feeding my new hens (6weeks) also do you think meat chickens can have fermented? Love the information of your video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

      I bet they would do well with a fermented feed. I always fed dry feed to my meat birds due to the type of feeders I was using.
      You would have lactic acid bacteria in whey.
      The bag of chicken feed should say when to switch to a grower or laying feed. Last time we had laying hen chicks I think we didn’t really pay much attention to it honestly, once they feathered out we put them with the layers and they ate the layer feed.

    you ferment the pig food because how else are you going to get mash for distilling untaxed liquor.
