    Airplane is a Schweizer SGS 2-32 glider that crashed in February 1974. FAA incident report says there were no fatalities, so there's that. Cool explore.

    Hiked there with my nephew 40 years ago, when he was a kid. Anytime in SoCal when you can hike more than 3 miles from the roads, then and only then will you stop seeing folks & their pets and their smells and will enjoy the flora & fauna of the woods and hills. It’s a great hike. Just not for the faint of heart.

    2/6/74 the pilot James Webb and his passenger Harry Diltiz were on a flight out of Llano, California, in the Schweizer SGS 2-32 N7622. While soaring in high winds near Mount Baden-Powell in the San Gabriel Mountains, they flew into a violent downdraft. It appears that the sailplane was trapped in the canyon and the pilot was attempting a landing in the wash at the bottom when it hit trees on final approach. Both the pilot and his passenger survived with only minor injuries, the sailplane was destroyed in the accident. You're gutsy BTW! That climbing was unbelievable!

    Plane was a Schweizer SGS 2-32

    2 occupants no fatalities
    aircraft damaged beyond repair, Written off
    Llano, CA

    It's crazy how rugged the San Gabriel's are...I've hiked and or mtn biked a huge number of the trails in the whole range (and cayoneered some of the narrow canyons with roping down waterfalls etc) - and despite being so close to one of the biggest megacities on earth, it can feel super remote. As a 55y/o former adventure sport guy, I'm going to respectfully make a couple of recommendations...First, I've had this thought watching your videos before - you'd really get better stability from a pair of collapsible hiking poles than a wooden walking stick - and when you're up on a cliff, collapse them and keep your hands free - a stick can break, or slide out & you may need your hands free. I fell only 20' and ended up needing a helicopter ride to a trauma center, trust me, you don't want that. Do you have a satellite message device like a Spot? If not, consider getting one for your solo explorations - even a simple broken ankle could become life or death if nobody knows where you are.
    That tunnel (which is what I think it was, there didn't appear to be any vein in there) was really wild! I guess when they built that trail, they thought it was easier to cut through than to try and carve out - a lot of work to go 10'! Riveted pipe could be for another Pelton wheel or just supplying water to a mine. Given how steep that final side canyon with the mine you pointed to near the end, it seems like all the rail and that tank could have just fallen from the mine & been washed down into the main drainage from that side canyon.

    The purple glass didn't have any color initially. For some reason they used lead in the manufacturing process of the glass which causes it to turn a lavender color when exposed to sunlight for a long time. An unbroken leaded glass bottle is surprisingly valuable.

    • @WesternMineDetective
      @WesternMineDetective  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's actually manganese oxide that they used in clear glass circa 1870-1930s that turned it a lavender purple color.

    • @DouglasMosley759
      @DouglasMosley759 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WesternMineDetective Cool. I guess that’s completely benign compared with lead.
      My 104 year grandmother-in-law gave us a bottle with an eagle molded into it and some names and legal warnings about what not to do with the bottle. It was colorless before we put it in the window with a few others and then it gradually turned a light shade of lavender.
      The pieces that you showed us must have been there in direct sunlight for almost two centuries. That darker purple is awesome. I’d love to make a cabochon out of a piece of that, it would look like a huge ruby.
      My grandmother-in-law told me it was turning purple because they use to use “leaded” glass back in her day so this is literally an old wives tale that I can dispense with. 🥳Thanks!
