A couple of reasons. 1. There are two health resources, hp and stress, if hp goes to 0 (you dont outright die but you get massive debuffs, and progressively higher chances to die) you are in trouble and if stress (at 100 debuffs and other problems happen and at 200 instant death) goes to high some argue its even worse. 2. A huge part of this videogame is positioning, both sides have 4 slots and all abilities can only be used from certain spots against certain spots, He has attacks that can only be used from slots 1/2 and only be used against slots 1/2, and the boss often was in spot 3/4, so the only thing they could do was heal. Its not as noticeable since this a 1 person challenge run (instead of 4 the usual). (normally its also a problem by itself since the enemy usually has attacks that put your party in disarray and many characters/skills are utterly useless if they are in certain spots. 3. The game is heavily random, if an enemy crits you not only gain extra damage but all attacks also do high stress damage, so if you are particularly unlucky you can gain 50 stress in a single turn.
@@UforianerTo add on to this; Stress is a cascading mechanic. Getting stressed can cause you stress and hitting 100 and getting a debuff further increases your stress taken. With a 4 person team you can very easily fall into a stress death spiral where someone cracks, is afflicted and punishes your team members. They then stress both from teammate affliction, the teammate affliction action and if they afflict it continues. If you’re high stress this ends up in someone heart attacking, stressing out everyone else for hitting deaths door, causing a heart attack in someone else, and on until the first guy suffers another heart attack and you team wipe.
Back in my day, we didn't heal our heroes. We died on every mission, and we liked it. Nowadays kids have their Divine Comforts and their Wyrd Reconstructions. It's a weakness of character, I tell you.
