There are actually references to Blood Angels turning into feral animals and starting to change physically as well. They have a place called the Tower of the Lost which they keep people who've lost themselves to the Rage or Thirst. In the Devastation of Baal they unleash then and they have clawed hands, and elongated arms. They read almost like a Varskyr or Varghul in AoS.
I remember that. Honestly I probably should have included that in the video. They were described as huge, feral and lumbering beasts that ran on their knuckles like apes
@@memesfromdeepspace1075 in some older vampire myths, the distinction isn't that clear cut. heck even as recently as Bram Stoker's Dracula the titular vampire has abilities very reminiscent with what would modernly be viewed as werewolf traits
For the immortality part of the vampire trope you could have used Mephiston or Raphen, the only two Blood Angels to have returned after being consumed by the Black Rage.
Also, while not immortal so does Blood Angels not die from old age, so they are immortal in the same sense as Vampires tend to be as they can also be killed, if often requiring special means.

Back in 40k 2nd edition, GW pretty much confirmed a link between vampires and Blood Angels by giving Mephiston the exact same statline as a Vampire Lord from Warhammer Fantasy.
In second Edition....i mean codex imperalis.... Small plate and there is it written....not 100% of the words but the mean burns in my mind 1996.....the human has a word for the blood angels and it s VAMPIRE...... you can read it by your own
The Blood Angels were the first chapter who's books I read. As Sanguinius affirms, it is the quest to restrain, rather than to deny, our more carnal natures that brings us any semblance of peace and understanding about ourselves and the role we play in it. Sanguinius and Angron didn't spend much time together, but they could have learned a great deal from each other, both stricken with a deep seated need for combat.
True. But Angron hated Sanguinius. Hell, he hated his own legion. He hated the title "Red Angel" even more since Sanguinius literally looked like an angel.
@@Jagonath a lot of that hate was misdirected frustration towards his father for sentencing the people of his homeworld to death, for leaving them without a leader to be butchered like pigs. He stole Angron’s ability to die with honor. That permeated all his relationships.
@@Jagonath as far as I'm aware, he didn't hate sanguinius. He hated being compared to him, but sanguinius was one of the few who could make Angron calm down, though that might have been a warp ability rather than Angron's personal feelings.

I was shocked to find that the Sanguinius Primarch novel was a horror story. I was honestly spooked by what happened in it. The creeping horror and the exploration of darkness was chilling to me
If you look at the graphic novel blood quest you see the physical transformation somone can undergo if they loose themselvs deeply enoug to the red thirst . They are also featured in the devastation of Baal when they are set loose from the tower of the lost and they have become strong enough to rip apart Carnifex with bear hands and no power armor. They legit look like the bat monsters from cursed city

I was already a huge fan of the blood angels, but this video made me realize just how deep and interesting the legion’s story is. I personally love the idea that even Sanguinius himself a was cursed, and the chapter we know in the 41st millennium is still holding on to his legacy, trying to deal with the red thirst while searching for a cure. There is nothing nobler than trying to resist your own wicked nature, the blood angels are proof of that
You should check their history and the change from pre Sanguinius reunion to after Sanguinius was found. The poetic beauty behind it and also the tragedy after our primarchs death is almost physically painful
The Roboutian Heresy took the vampire aspect and ran with it all the way from Terra to the Eye of Terror and into the arms of Slaanesh. Interestingly enough, in that continuity, Khorne was also a contender for being the Blood Angel's patron, considering the blood spilling and berserker rage associated with the death company.

Definitely approve of their choice of falling to Slaanesh in that, and requires a more nuanced (or just a more well-rounded understanding), the Blood Angels, in varying degrees amongst themselves and their successor chapters, suffer from a desire for excess. Excess in bloodletting, blood drinking, combat, the emotions from said combat, and maybe an argument could be made about it then being channeled into their adornments and art.
@@TheDark1903 Blood is a universal symbol of life, as well as death. It actually makes more sense to me for them to fall to Nurgle than Khorne, especially since one of the classic abilities of vampires is to create not just more vampires, but undead servants. So many motifs of the Blood Angels and vampires are about life, as well as death. It also in some ways makes more sense than the death guard falling for the god of life in the canon story. Still,. Slaanesh was.the better choice for them.
My brother told me about your channel 2 days ago and Ive been binging ever since. I love the videos. You have no gate keeping or elitism in them and your passion really comes through as you speak. About 24 years ago my little brother went in a hobby shop to buy some Pokemon cards, in the back of the store these guys were playing this huge board game so my brother went to check it out, long story short he didn't get any Pokemon cards that day, instead he came home with a codex for the blood angels and a white dwarf magazine. Only problem was he couldn't read good at all so he had me read it to him, which in turn got my interest. My brother literally learned how to read because 40k was so interesting. This was when the Tau weren't even a thing yet btw. Nobody we knew played Warhammer except those old nerds at the comics and cards shop so I started playing with my brother. About 2 years later I bought the Tau box set, u remember that box set? 😊 Their first box set was awesome and now all these years later my brothers room at his house looks just like a games workshop 💯 complete with glass display cases and literally hundreds and hundreds of models, every codex imaginable, terrain pieces that haven't been available for years, plastic crack still in the boxes from floor to ceiling 💯 enough dice to gravel a driveway with and possibly the largest collection of painted miniatures in the country. Oh and he can paint like the mfs who paint the mini's you see in the codex's not even kidding 💯 All because he just happened to see those guys in the back of that store it redirected our entire lives and kept him and me out of God knows how much trouble. Way back in 3rd edition when NOBODY else knew about the hobby and now look how far it's came 😁

Okay so it's kind of crazy I actually trust you for all my 40K lore and I wanted to know more about the blood angels so I looked up blood angels WesHammer and the timing is so perfect
Astorath (the High Chaplain of the blood angels) Also has the Dracula style armor. He's a pretty interesting character. I recommend reading his book. It's shows the heavy burden of his office, and how seriously and proudly he takes his duties. It also helped me understand why he wasn't at Bhal. He had duties to perform and not all of the angels or chapters were on Bhal.
"Space Vampires", is how the Blood Angels were originally introduced to me. It's what got me into the tabletop in the first place. Reading more about their lore I quickly fell in love with the chapter, and it's why my first army was Blood Angels.
Your presentation of content is so eloquently spoken and well-structured it makes listening to a 30-minute video feel like an instant. It is not a skill many people have and with it your love for this franchise truly shows in all your videos. You draw such well-defined parallels between us the reader and the characters of the universe it makes it so easy for me to immerser myself into the characters and lore of Warhammer that I just can't stop consuming your content.
I’ve always found Blood Angels fashinating due to this duality within them. Angels and vampires are super similar when studying theology and etymology. Midnight Mass- series showcase those similarities pretty well and 40K had found those dualities on their writing as well. I still wouldn’t say Blood Angels are vampires, just vampiresque. Vampires are always vampires first and their secondary identity second whereas Blood Angels, no matter how brutal are always Space Marines first.
I find interesting that doing art , like poetry or painting can really help blood angels stop red thirst symptoms. Its really a vast spectrum, from the ultimate golden angelic warrior, an artistic beautiful greek god to feral corrupted night creature berserker, hunting for blood. In a way, it represents humanity from its best Way to the worst.
Major-kill and WesHammer are the only lore masters Who's videos I actually watch more than 5 minutes of and usually finish. Both great in their own ways
As an addict myself (I'm clean now but the cravings never go away) I don't understand the Blood Angel's insistence on including blood imagery in all of their artwork when they state they're trying not to give in. If I were to surround myself with images of small, colorful pills or various paraphernalia while lacing all my conversation with drug references my cravings would skyrocket.
Like many chapters tradition probably plays a part of it. I however think we are ignoring that they can never not be reminded of Blood, it is the Blood of Sanguinius that makes them what they are, it runs in the bodies of every one of thier brothers and it flows in the heat of battle. If you are constantly going to be reminded of Blood why not just own it. Lastly, they are addicts but very few of them are recovering addicts (like Dante), most Blood Angels are partaking regularly of the source of thier addiction (through transfusion or through drinking Karash) and as such avoiding Blood iconography isn't really important at all.
The core of vampirism is the extraction of life-force from others to satiate oneself, while at great the cost to the vampire who also gains some extreme weaknesses. In folklore they are alive but cannot "live" or experience the joys of life like sunlight, reproduction or friendship, and in modern context they are more like allegories for addiction and greed. In original European myths, vampires were more akin to zombies, they rose from the grave to devour their friends and family but could only enter when invited. It was an allegory to the idea of grief and despair, a warning against allowing yourself to give in to the depression and nihilism following loss you may as well be dead yourself.
The Blood Angels and every part of them flawed or otherwise was my first introduction to the Warhammer franchise as a whole. I have always been a huge lore nerd and love delving into the depths of the series from every part I can and I tend to be fascinated by the supernatural and the monstrous. Ever the goth, I always saw that even the darker things have their own beauty.

Baldermort, another lore master here on TH-cam, shared a story with us across many videos of "The General and the Angel." It was about how a human general and a blood angel formed a deep respect and later friendship with one another. This General was probably on his last rejuvenation treatment, and so his blood angel friend came to see him and gave him one last gift. The angel, with the help of his apothecaries and medical staff, shared his blood with this mortal man. In the end, the rejuvenation worked, perhaps because of the Blood Angel's gift, or perhaps he just got lucky. The story ends here, but it would be AWESOME if perhaps now that human general now has his own "Red Thirst" as it were. He is no space marine and never will be, but perhaps he enjoys a longer life and vast improvements to his health...but at a cost. That would be such a cool one-off thing in the lore and fits in with some vampire lore. A man saved by the blood of an angel, only to also suffer from their thirst for blood.
Love the Blood Angels! Dante and The Devestation of Baal were my first propper introduction to 40K after a couple of years of watching Luetin's lore-videos!

It felt like such an overwhelming task to begin with, but all your little micro videos got me hooked and I've started going back through your older, longer vids as well. I think the Blood Angels are a loyal faction that have flaws that they're actively trying to resolve. The daily struggle they have with the affliction shows their humanity despite being Astartes. I love this faction because it grounds them and allows the fans to understand that not everything is cut and dry with the series. Emperor be praised.
As someone with every single warhmer channel under their watch list. this content creator arms race is thrilling to watch and the the golden age of the art. Litterally the best time for a 40k fan.
Love these lore dives. Being a collector of dual focus, the Blood Angels are my 1st love having amassed a chapters worth of models. My second, and one I tend to field more commonly for playing is the Minotaurs. I would love to see you do deep dive on them and their leadership. I know it can be rather limited, but still worth a look. Considering they always deploy as a full chapter, were one of the 1st chapters to utilize Primaris marines and specialize in destroying other Space Marines. Just ask the Doom Warriors and Inceptors chapters... or what's left of them.
I learned about, and got into Wahammer 40K video games from the Dawn Of War games (damn almost been 20 years since the first one came out). I enjoy your videoes and the lore in general. Are the Blood Ravens canon, and would that be an interesting video about them?

This was a really cool deep dive into a topic that isn't talked about much afaik. I've only read one of the blood angel books and I'm about to read a few more but there is depictions of Haemomancy and Haemokenesis in Mephiston, Blood of Sanguinius. I don't know if you'd really consider that a vampiric trait or vamprie adjacent, I just thought it was really cool. You have a really poetic way with words and presenting information, these videos are always a treat to watch. Thank you for all the hard work.
Blood of Sanguinius is just a catch all term the 9th and all their successors. The tribe that Sanguinius was adopted called themselves 'the Blood' , so that could just be a Baalite thing too.
At roughly 18:10, it really Sounds like old man arcan land was feeling some type of way about that space marine and was trying to go the way of the old greeks.
I can wholeheartedly recommend Signus Daemonicus by James Swallow, it's the story where the Blood Angels fight Chaos (Khorne & Slaanesh) for the first time. Good stuff.

I like them the way they are, no need for Games Workshop to fuck anything up by trying to make them different. I remeber the first time I read about the affliction, it was when Horus caught Sanguinius mercy-killing one of his Space marines because he had succumbed to the Red Thirst. That is when I dug further, and it made me respect the Blood Angels, even more! Great Video breakdown.
I'm just getting into the lore of Warhammer. When I had people to play with we could not afford all the miniatures needed to enjoy a proper campaign. I am finding the lore to be fascinating and I'm going to be getting some of the novels to enjoy. Thank you for the video's you put out.

I might be biased but I started my Black library expedition with Blood Angels, I think the recent heresy book is great, the Guy Hayley trilogy of Dante-Devastation of Baal-Darkness in the Blood has been read again multiple times, and the Sons of Sanguinius Omnibus I'd highly recommend too
Hey Wes! Love your channel and meteoritic rise as a TH-camr! Space wolves have a lot of werewolf lore and the blood angels have a few vamp aesthetics. But I think like so many things in 40K, it’s part of the story for color but not the whole thing. :)
Thanks for this well-researched exploration. It is truly a labour of love. I am a WH40K old timer, and in the 2nd edition book there was a marvelous book - the Codex Imperialis. After 1st. ed GW had enough time and inclination to build a fairly comprehensive (dare I say, cohesive?) world that explored all factions. That book included from Arbites to Genestealer cults, and what it made in breadth it lacked in detail. So the Blood Angels (and most faction's) entry consisted of a quick explanation of the basic lore, and one invaluable "excerpt" that came in the way of a side note. These were all strewn in the book, and it described it very similarly to how you did - how behind the facade of beauty and excellence the strain of The Flaw could be perceived, and how there were "rumours" of bloodless imperial citizens in zones where Blood Angels where deployed, and other stories of insanity and bloodthirst that accompanied the Chapter's history. It also says that these rumours reminded some historians of the legends of "vampires". Those old stories and the aim to reconcile the savagery and temptation within with the sense of duty made me a lifelong fan of the chapter. More broadly ,those side notes were some of the best parts of WH40k. Snippets of chapter history, little bits of action from assassins, some references to (at the time) very obscure events like the Contagion of Ganymede, some early Fenrisian's trials, the story of an Adept that finds that a scanner (never explained what) reads "all systems stable - at flatline" and pays for his life. Maybe the Emperor was really dead al along in his throne(?!). And so on. If somehow you can get your hands on the second edition books from the WH40K box there are dozens (if not hundreds) of these little lore fragments that spawned so many stories in the next 20 years. Thanks again, and keep up the great work.
That sounds super interesting. I'm going to have to try to track down those books! I know there's a lot of Warhammer world exclusive books kind of in the same vein that do a lot of world building behind the scenes and often are narrated from the perspective of somebody within the Imperium. Hopefully one day I'll make it over there. I agree whole heartedly that those little snippets are some of the best, most intriguing parts of the lore and I adore how often they were sprinkled throughout some of the older fluff. I also really enjoy how a lot of newer lore takes those and builds on them rather than just ignoring them.
I personally feel the design should stay as it is. Remembering the original Dracula, despite being a vampire he was still initially beautiful to look at, and in later works the expanded on the fact that he was enjoyable to look at and could be pleasing to speak with and be around. Most representations of his many brides didn't follow the mind control powers of vampires but just they wanted to be there with him. And it's because of that I feel this design for the blood angels is more accurate to vampires then if they were to start making changes.

I love the way Sanguinius spoke to the remembrancer and it seriously makes me mad that he died. I know its probably a bad thing to bring Sangy back in 40k but god I would love to have seen how he would fare in the modern era with the returned Guilliman and Lion.
Siege of Terra has given me an opinion and curiosity on Sangy and the BA's I didn't have before. Yeah, I was lured in my dark angels, and like most lore fans, hyperfixated, but the more I read. Especially within the 30k hh, and siege series... I find myself back to the yt lore rabbithole and learning about the blood angels.
Blood Angels are also depicted as being the most angelic of the space marines. Those saved by them feel as though it wasnt just their lives saved but infact there entire soul. As if they where saved truly and holy.

They are as close to vampires as you can get without actually being one. No stakes to the heart(s) no magic that makes you entranced no fear of sunlight and definitely no fear of crosses. They simply gain power from it and can become additcted to the consuming of blood.
Idk if fulgrim ever really interacted with sanguinius but IF sanguinius does come back, I want someone to make a video of a Brad Pitt and Tom cruise from “interview with a vampire” but it’s Louis as sanguinius and Lestat as chaos fulgrim. I could see fulgrim trying to tempt sanguinius with slanesh because they could enjoy, not only the blood, but everything else again. I know black rage and red thirst are more khorne but I could definitely see their red thirst as an addiction and an excess. But purple Tom cruise trying to convince Brad “sanguinius” Pitt to give into his “true” nature would be so fun. The two pretty boy monsters.

The Black Rage is something that gets talked about in a Rather interesting way in the Battle Sector game which takes place after the tyrinad invasion of baal. That was how I learned about it
Outstanding work. Thanks. I have played the BAs and Chaos Marines since 97-98. The backstory & lore of 40K is what hooked me. Now it is more or less mainstream I feel more solidified in my ties to the Space Marines. ☠️ The only way to make a Space Marine cooler, is to make him Chaos. Blood Angels or Nurgle 1500 pts sounds like a good afternoon to me! Please keep up the good work. Big fan.
As a BA player and having had massive temper issues when I was younger I think more about the struggle with black rage than that the red thirst. Sure, there are vampiric traits but look at the book Astorath Angel of Mercy, the black rage is more of an issue than the desire for blood. Maybe just because it is just that the red thirst is a thing one can choose and use - like eating meat or not. The black rage on the other hand is much more of a curse - like cancer.
They fit the literal definition of one when they are going through the red thirst, ctan are also described as a type of Star vampire as in they drain stars (and souls) for energy
This one hits close to home for me. The Blood Angels are my favorite Legion. They are flawed but through their own will power they overcome their affliction. Yes, some of the chapters do give into their thirst and go to town but that is not the core of who they are. Dante is the closest thing we have in 40k to Sanguinius himself without of course bringing The Sanguinor into the discussion. I think the reason Dante seems so unkillable or just can't die is somehow in part due to Sanguinius himself reaching out from the Warp to keep this man going. Dante has seen and been through more shit than a good I would say 80% if not more of the Imperium. The dudes only wish is to die but each battle he is in, fate says nah you will live and live he does. I can only hope that Sanguinius returns to 40k in 1 form or an other. Sanguinius would be proud of his Son. I really enjoyed this video Wes. It flowed so seamlessly. The more I watched and listened just made me want to go back a reread all those books again. I'm a Blood Angel at heart as they were the first, and only, chapter/legion I actually played with before I became infatuated by the lore! But I never knew they were known as The Revenant Legion before Sanguinius! Thank you.
Another interesting note about that slow reveal and since of creeping dread seems similar to how the original Dracula novel handle the realization of Dracula's own vampirism
It seems to me that all the other vampire tropes that the Blood Angels don't have fit right onto the Night Lords; darkness, fear, Curze can turn into a bat-creature (I think?)

For the immortality part of the vampire trope you could have used Mephiston or Raphen, the only two Blood Angels to have returned after being consumed by the Black Rage.
Hell, Mephiston has literally died and come back before-and more than once if you count his crossing of the Rubicon Primaris
Also, while not immortal so does Blood Angels not die from old age, so they are immortal in the same sense as Vampires tend to be as they can also be killed, if often requiring special means.

Back in 40k 2nd edition, GW pretty much confirmed a link between vampires and Blood Angels by giving Mephiston the exact same statline as a Vampire Lord from Warhammer Fantasy.

The Blood Angels were the first chapter who's books I read. As Sanguinius affirms, it is the quest to restrain, rather than to deny, our more carnal natures that brings us any semblance of peace and understanding about ourselves and the role we play in it. Sanguinius and Angron didn't spend much time together, but they could have learned a great deal from each other, both stricken with a deep seated need for combat.

@@Jagonath as far as I'm aware, he didn't hate sanguinius. He hated being compared to him, but sanguinius was one of the few who could make Angron calm down, though that might have been a warp ability rather than Angron's personal feelings.

I've listened to a few. Helsreach, The Devastation of Baal, and two of the Commissar Cain books. Good stuff for the most part, no I wasn't a huge fan of the Devastation of Baal.
I was shocked to find that the Sanguinius Primarch novel was a horror story. I was honestly spooked by what happened in it. The creeping horror and the exploration of darkness was chilling to me
If you look at the graphic novel blood quest you see the physical transformation somone can undergo if they loose themselvs deeply enoug to the red thirst . They are also featured in the devastation of Baal when they are set loose from the tower of the lost and they have become strong enough to rip apart Carnifex with bear hands and no power armor. They legit look like the bat monsters from cursed city

I was already a huge fan of the blood angels, but this video made me realize just how deep and interesting the legion’s story is. I personally love the idea that even Sanguinius himself a was cursed, and the chapter we know in the 41st millennium is still holding on to his legacy, trying to deal with the red thirst while searching for a cure. There is nothing nobler than trying to resist your own wicked nature, the blood angels are proof of that
You should check their history and the change from pre Sanguinius reunion to after Sanguinius was found. The poetic beauty behind it and also the tragedy after our primarchs death is almost physically painful
The Roboutian Heresy took the vampire aspect and ran with it all the way from Terra to the Eye of Terror and into the arms of Slaanesh.
Interestingly enough, in that continuity, Khorne was also a contender for being the Blood Angel's patron, considering the blood spilling and berserker rage associated with the death company.
Yeah the Blood Angels really could go either way, with either Khorne or Slaanesh being reasonable patrons.

Definitely approve of their choice of falling to Slaanesh in that, and requires a more nuanced (or just a more well-rounded understanding), the Blood Angels, in varying degrees amongst themselves and their successor chapters, suffer from a desire for excess. Excess in bloodletting, blood drinking, combat, the emotions from said combat, and maybe an argument could be made about it then being channeled into their adornments and art.
@@TheDark1903 Blood is a universal symbol of life, as well as death. It actually makes more sense to me for them to fall to Nurgle than Khorne, especially since one of the classic abilities of vampires is to create not just more vampires, but undead servants.
So many motifs of the Blood Angels and vampires are about life, as well as death. It also in some ways makes more sense than the death guard falling for the god of life in the canon story.
Still,. Slaanesh was.the better choice for them.

About 24 years ago my little brother went in a hobby shop to buy some Pokemon cards, in the back of the store these guys were playing this huge board game so my brother went to check it out, long story short he didn't get any Pokemon cards that day, instead he came home with a codex for the blood angels and a white dwarf magazine. Only problem was he couldn't read good at all so he had me read it to him, which in turn got my interest. My brother literally learned how to read because 40k was so interesting. This was when the Tau weren't even a thing yet btw. Nobody we knew played Warhammer except those old nerds at the comics and cards shop so I started playing with my brother. About 2 years later I bought the Tau box set, u remember that box set? 😊 Their first box set was awesome and now all these years later my brothers room at his house looks just like a games workshop 💯 complete with glass display cases and literally hundreds and hundreds of models, every codex imaginable, terrain pieces that haven't been available for years, plastic crack still in the boxes from floor to ceiling 💯 enough dice to gravel a driveway with and possibly the largest collection of painted miniatures in the country. Oh and he can paint like the mfs who paint the mini's you see in the codex's not even kidding 💯 All because he just happened to see those guys in the back of that store it redirected our entire lives and kept him and me out of God knows how much trouble. Way back in 3rd edition when NOBODY else knew about the hobby and now look how far it's came 😁

Okay so it's kind of crazy I actually trust you for all my 40K lore and I wanted to know more about the blood angels so I looked up blood angels WesHammer and the timing is so perfect
Astorath (the High Chaplain of the blood angels) Also has the Dracula style armor. He's a pretty interesting character. I recommend reading his book. It's shows the heavy burden of his office, and how seriously and proudly he takes his duties. It also helped me understand why he wasn't at Bhal. He had duties to perform and not all of the angels or chapters were on Bhal.
"Space Vampires", is how the Blood Angels were originally introduced to me. It's what got me into the tabletop in the first place. Reading more about their lore I quickly fell in love with the chapter, and it's why my first army was Blood Angels.
Your presentation of content is so eloquently spoken and well-structured it makes listening to a 30-minute video feel like an instant. It is not a skill many people have and with it your love for this franchise truly shows in all your videos. You draw such well-defined parallels between us the reader and the characters of the universe it makes it so easy for me to immerser myself into the characters and lore of Warhammer that I just can't stop consuming your content.

I’ve always found Blood Angels fashinating due to this duality within them.
Angels and vampires are super similar when studying theology and etymology. Midnight Mass- series showcase those similarities pretty well and 40K had found those dualities on their writing as well. I still wouldn’t say Blood Angels are vampires, just vampiresque. Vampires are always vampires first and their secondary identity second whereas Blood Angels, no matter how brutal are always Space Marines first.
I find interesting that doing art , like poetry or painting can really help blood angels stop red thirst symptoms.
Its really a vast spectrum, from the ultimate golden angelic warrior, an artistic beautiful greek god to feral corrupted night creature berserker, hunting for blood.
In a way, it represents humanity from its best Way to the worst.
If we have to accept the sparkling travesty of Twilight as vampires, then the much more brutal and tragic Blood Angel is certainly qualifying.

As an addict myself (I'm clean now but the cravings never go away) I don't understand the Blood Angel's insistence on including blood imagery in all of their artwork when they state they're trying not to give in. If I were to surround myself with images of small, colorful pills or various paraphernalia while lacing all my conversation with drug references my cravings would skyrocket.
Like many chapters tradition probably plays a part of it. I however think we are ignoring that they can never not be reminded of Blood, it is the Blood of Sanguinius that makes them what they are, it runs in the bodies of every one of thier brothers and it flows in the heat of battle. If you are constantly going to be reminded of Blood why not just own it.
Lastly, they are addicts but very few of them are recovering addicts (like Dante), most Blood Angels are partaking regularly of the source of thier addiction (through transfusion or through drinking Karash) and as such avoiding Blood iconography isn't really important at all.

The core of vampirism is the extraction of life-force from others to satiate oneself, while at great the cost to the vampire who also gains some extreme weaknesses. In folklore they are alive but cannot "live" or experience the joys of life like sunlight, reproduction or friendship, and in modern context they are more like allegories for addiction and greed.
In original European myths, vampires were more akin to zombies, they rose from the grave to devour their friends and family but could only enter when invited. It was an allegory to the idea of grief and despair, a warning against allowing yourself to give in to the depression and nihilism following loss you may as well be dead yourself.
The Blood Angels and every part of them flawed or otherwise was my first introduction to the Warhammer franchise as a whole.
I have always been a huge lore nerd and love delving into the depths of the series from every part I can and I tend to be fascinated by the supernatural and the monstrous.
Ever the goth, I always saw that even the darker things have their own beauty.

Baldermort, another lore master here on TH-cam, shared a story with us across many videos of "The General and the Angel." It was about how a human general and a blood angel formed a deep respect and later friendship with one another. This General was probably on his last rejuvenation treatment, and so his blood angel friend came to see him and gave him one last gift. The angel, with the help of his apothecaries and medical staff, shared his blood with this mortal man. In the end, the rejuvenation worked, perhaps because of the Blood Angel's gift, or perhaps he just got lucky.
The story ends here, but it would be AWESOME if perhaps now that human general now has his own "Red Thirst" as it were. He is no space marine and never will be, but perhaps he enjoys a longer life and vast improvements to his health...but at a cost.
That would be such a cool one-off thing in the lore and fits in with some vampire lore. A man saved by the blood of an angel, only to also suffer from their thirst for blood.

The thirst reminds me a lot of the curse of Wulfen that the Space wolves deal with, constantly fighting the beast as rangar describes it
I think the Blood Angels are a loyal faction that have flaws that they're actively trying to resolve. The daily struggle they have with the affliction shows their humanity despite being Astartes. I love this faction because it grounds them and allows the fans to understand that not everything is cut and dry with the series. Emperor be praised.

As someone with every single warhmer channel under their watch list. this content creator arms race is thrilling to watch and the the golden age of the art. Litterally the best time for a 40k fan.
Love these lore dives. Being a collector of dual focus, the Blood Angels are my 1st love having amassed a chapters worth of models. My second, and one I tend to field more commonly for playing is the Minotaurs. I would love to see you do deep dive on them and their leadership. I know it can be rather limited, but still worth a look. Considering they always deploy as a full chapter, were one of the 1st chapters to utilize Primaris marines and specialize in destroying other Space Marines. Just ask the Doom Warriors and Inceptors chapters... or what's left of them.
I learned about, and got into Wahammer 40K video games from the Dawn Of War games (damn almost been 20 years since the first one came out). I enjoy your videoes and the lore in general. Are the Blood Ravens canon, and would that be an interesting video about them?
Blood Ravens are cannon, but there are more questions than answers about their lore.

This was a really cool deep dive into a topic that isn't talked about much afaik. I've only read one of the blood angel books and I'm about to read a few more but there is depictions of Haemomancy and Haemokenesis in Mephiston, Blood of Sanguinius. I don't know if you'd really consider that a vampiric trait or vamprie adjacent, I just thought it was really cool.

Blood of Sanguinius is just a catch all term the 9th and all their successors. The tribe that Sanguinius was adopted called themselves 'the Blood' , so that could just be a Baalite thing too.

I like them the way they are, no need for Games Workshop to fuck anything up by trying to make them different. I remeber the first time I read about the affliction, it was when Horus caught Sanguinius mercy-killing one of his Space marines because he had succumbed to the Red Thirst. That is when I dug further, and it made me respect the Blood Angels, even more! Great Video breakdown.

I might be biased but I started my Black library expedition with Blood Angels, I think the recent heresy book is great, the Guy Hayley trilogy of Dante-Devastation of Baal-Darkness in the Blood has been read again multiple times, and the Sons of Sanguinius Omnibus I'd highly recommend too
Also cawl stated that the emporor had designed the red thirst as a part of the blood angels down to the base level in an intentional way

Hey Wes! Love your channel and meteoritic rise as a TH-camr! Space wolves have a lot of werewolf lore and the blood angels have a few vamp aesthetics. But I think like so many things in 40K, it’s part of the story for color but not the whole thing. :)
Thanks for this well-researched exploration. It is truly a labour of love.
I am a WH40K old timer, and in the 2nd edition book there was a marvelous book - the Codex Imperialis. After 1st. ed GW had enough time and inclination to build a fairly comprehensive (dare I say, cohesive?) world that explored all factions. That book included from Arbites to Genestealer cults, and what it made in breadth it lacked in detail.
So the Blood Angels (and most faction's) entry consisted of a quick explanation of the basic lore, and one invaluable "excerpt" that came in the way of a side note. These were all strewn in the book, and it described it very similarly to how you did - how behind the facade of beauty and excellence the strain of The Flaw could be perceived, and how there were "rumours" of bloodless imperial citizens in zones where Blood Angels where deployed, and other stories of insanity and bloodthirst that accompanied the Chapter's history. It also says that these rumours reminded some historians of the legends of "vampires". Those old stories and the aim to reconcile the savagery and temptation within with the sense of duty made me a lifelong fan of the chapter.
More broadly ,those side notes were some of the best parts of WH40k. Snippets of chapter history, little bits of action from assassins, some references to (at the time) very obscure events like the Contagion of Ganymede, some early Fenrisian's trials, the story of an Adept that finds that a scanner (never explained what) reads "all systems stable - at flatline" and pays for his life. Maybe the Emperor was really dead al along in his throne(?!).
And so on. If somehow you can get your hands on the second edition books from the WH40K box there are dozens (if not hundreds) of these little lore fragments that spawned so many stories in the next 20 years.

That sounds super interesting. I'm going to have to try to track down those books! I know there's a lot of Warhammer world exclusive books kind of in the same vein that do a lot of world building behind the scenes and often are narrated from the perspective of somebody within the Imperium. Hopefully one day I'll make it over there.
I agree whole heartedly that those little snippets are some of the best, most intriguing parts of the lore and I adore how often they were sprinkled throughout some of the older fluff. I also really enjoy how a lot of newer lore takes those and builds on them rather than just ignoring them.

I personally feel the design should stay as it is. Remembering the original Dracula, despite being a vampire he was still initially beautiful to look at, and in later works the expanded on the fact that he was enjoyable to look at and could be pleasing to speak with and be around. Most representations of his many brides didn't follow the mind control powers of vampires but just they wanted to be there with him.
And it's because of that I feel this design for the blood angels is more accurate to vampires then if they were to start making changes.

I love the way Sanguinius spoke to the remembrancer and it seriously makes me mad that he died. I know its probably a bad thing to bring Sangy back in 40k but god I would love to have seen how he would fare in the modern era with the returned Guilliman and Lion.

Siege of Terra has given me an opinion and curiosity on Sangy and the BA's I didn't have before. Yeah, I was lured in my dark angels, and like most lore fans, hyperfixated, but the more I read. Especially within the 30k hh, and siege series... I find myself back to the yt lore rabbithole and learning about the blood angels.
Blood Angels are also depicted as being the most angelic of the space marines.
Those saved by them feel as though it wasnt just their lives saved but infact there entire soul. As if they where saved truly and holy.

They are as close to vampires as you can get without actually being one. No stakes to the heart(s) no magic that makes you entranced no fear of sunlight and definitely no fear of crosses. They simply gain power from it and can become additcted to the consuming of blood.

Idk if fulgrim ever really interacted with sanguinius but IF sanguinius does come back, I want someone to make a video of a Brad Pitt and Tom cruise from “interview with a vampire” but it’s Louis as sanguinius and Lestat as chaos fulgrim. I could see fulgrim trying to tempt sanguinius with slanesh because they could enjoy, not only the blood, but everything else again. I know black rage and red thirst are more khorne but I could definitely see their red thirst as an addiction and an excess. But purple Tom cruise trying to convince Brad “sanguinius” Pitt to give into his “true” nature would be so fun. The two pretty boy monsters.

The Black Rage is something that gets talked about in a Rather interesting way in the Battle Sector game which takes place after the tyrinad invasion of baal. That was how I learned about it
Outstanding work. Thanks. I have played the BAs and Chaos Marines since 97-98. The backstory & lore of 40K is what hooked me. Now it is more or less mainstream I feel more solidified in my ties to the Space Marines. ☠️

As a BA player and having had massive temper issues when I was younger I think more about the struggle with black rage than that the red thirst. Sure, there are vampiric traits but look at the book Astorath Angel of Mercy, the black rage is more of an issue than the desire for blood. Maybe just because it is just that the red thirst is a thing one can choose and use - like eating meat or not. The black rage on the other hand is much more of a curse - like cancer.
They fit the literal definition of one when they are going through the red thirst, ctan are also described as a type of Star vampire as in they drain stars (and souls) for energy
This one hits close to home for me. The Blood Angels are my favorite Legion. They are flawed but through their own will power they overcome their affliction. Yes, some of the chapters do give into their thirst and go to town but that is not the core of who they are. Dante is the closest thing we have in 40k to Sanguinius himself without of course bringing The Sanguinor into the discussion. I think the reason Dante seems so unkillable or just can't die is somehow in part due to Sanguinius himself reaching out from the Warp to keep this man going. Dante has seen and been through more shit than a good I would say 80% if not more of the Imperium. The dudes only wish is to die but each battle he is in, fate says nah you will live and live he does. I can only hope that Sanguinius returns to 40k in 1 form or an other. Sanguinius would be proud of his Son.

I'm a Blood Angel at heart as they were the first, and only, chapter/legion I actually played with before I became infatuated by the lore! But I never knew they were known as The Revenant Legion before Sanguinius! Thank you.
Another interesting note about that slow reveal and since of creeping dread seems similar to how the original Dracula novel handle the realization of Dracula's own vampirism
It seems to me that all the other vampire tropes that the Blood Angels don't have fit right onto the Night Lords; darkness, fear, Curze can turn into a bat-creature (I think?)
