Librarian's are some of my favourite Space Marines just for how powerful they can be,yet how restrained they need to be to hold off damnation. Now that's good Grimdark.

@@DeathScepter The warp isn't just a negative. All positive things manifest to the warp the same as negative things, so the warp is kind of like the whole force in Star Wars, except the warp is also a dimension unlike the force.
I'd say there's a further difference between a sorcerer and a psyker. To be a psyker you basically must be born as a psyker, possessing some psychic potential to tap the warp for power. While anyone at all can become a sorcerer, you just wouldn't necessarily be able to do all the things a sorcerer that is also a psyker would, or not as easily. What you learn to do as a sorcerer is a combination of asking or compelling the various critters of the warp to do things that benefit you by doing various things in realspace, and also ways to control the energy of the warp in a limited fashion, again by doing various things in realspace, these are often completely nonsensical things such as speaking gibberish prayers while performing hand signs and brandishing implements stained with various foul substances, and so on, and the result is almost like cheat codes for reality. There also exists ACTUAL console commands for reality in the 40k universe, and these are so powerful that even the few daemons that actually know some rarely teach any of these to mortals.
Not sure how accurate it is but years ago I heard that sorcery in its entirety is the source code of reality with varying levels of effectiveness that's why you can have a planet with few if any psychers and still have choas outbreak they teach some poor smuck of an average joe just enough to LET THEM IN. Also the stuff they teach to sorcers is fluffed up with useless bulk so mortals can't actually master Sorcerey it's made dangerous purposely so their door openers don't last long.
Well, Mephiston by example is such a strong librarian, he bodied a few Daemon Champions of the Chaos Gods and made Magnus look freaking stupid, so, a few of them are almost equals to their Primarchs.
Mephiston is an anomaly as he is able to still use a substantial amount of his power while in the presence of the Shadow in the Warp. And he’s said to be the host of the Angel of Darkness. So yeah he is incredibly powerful
To be fair to Magnus, making him look like a fucking idiot isn't hard. This man really went "Hmm, Dad told me not to go into his study and don't play with fire... IMMA PLAY WITH FIRE IN HIS STUDY WHILE HE'S TRYING TO WORK!" In all seriousness, Magnus tried so damn hard and I think his soul got shattered for the effort so I'm not sure how that affects his Psychic potential.
I like how the librarians are always held at arms length because of how dangerous they can be, unless you’re the grey knights, in that case no one cares cause everyone’s a psycher
I love the stormseers! By far my favorite librarians. Yesugei is one of the coolest characters of the entire heresy. I also like how jaghatai and the white scars didn't seem to give the shady eye to yesugei and the stormseers. Yesugei was pretty much jaghatais favorite and most beloved advisor and he had such a human side to his personality. He was funny and joked like all the time. Just a great character and an awesome librarian. Dude was a beast! His death brought a tear to my eye
I swear the 40k lore is an endless rabbit hole. The first time I read about librarians, I wanted to know more about psychers. Then I found the ranking system (alpha to omega). The I read that an alpha plus psycher can fold a titan in half like a piece of paper. Then I found out what a titan is...long story short I can completely understand why they get shot the moment they are found. As always an amazing dive into the lore. Thanks a lot :)
I saw a librarian once. He was carrying a staff of such immense size he could have riden it like a broom. I told him to do a kick flip and then ran away. I made down it a whole hive level before I was hit in the back of the head by the librarian's serf, whom he had hurled on a hurricane wind, while shouting "Four!" He seemed to be disturbed by this and started counting up "five... six..." when he reached seven he turned into an puddle of goo, and splashed on the boots of a passer by. This is all I saw before falling over the railing. I am falling still. I think I am about half way through the main down drainage pipe, somewhere in the mid-level of the under hive. Really good wifi down here though.
@@theenderdestruction2362 as if in response to your question, a sound echoes in your mind. It puts you in mind of a bucket of water being thrown at a wall. It sounds like a splat. You look down and see a fading red smear on the ground infront of your feet and what looks to be the remains of a vox unit in the corner of the room. You can just make out the word "samsung" on one small piece. Something bad happened here.
I have always loved the White Scars and Jaghatais nature. From the beginning the Stormseers held many similarities to the Space Wolf rune priests they didn't pull directly from the warp. Leman Russ despite fighting to ban all use of psychic in the legions did not adhere to the edict lay down by the Council of Nikaea since he still used Space Wolf psykers refusing to admit they were psykers.
@@Canadian_Zac He wasn't the only one who found Russ obnoxious in that regard. Heck, as far as I know, only Angron and Kurze didn't deride Russ as a hypocrite on the subject of psykers at any point.
At 7:25 all i could think of when Wes was talking for the explanation of psykers having to share the burden was the two psykers from the short film series Astartes with the twin psykers on that with the golden masks !

Dude I can never get enough of your videos, they are some of my favorite ways to absorb the lore since fixed income makes it hard to get the books or build my army(Ad-Mech). Would you ever consider doing a Tech-Marine deep dive? I've been obsessed with them ever since I read the Salamander's Omnibus and Master of the Forge Argos had some awesome moments.
Technically, no. They're all psykers, but not librarians. The difference is that all of them are trained to be exceptional at resisting the warp, but only the librarians are trained at using it. I'm not sure if there are any actual numbers, but there's no reason to assume they have a lot more librarians than most other chapters. The best I can find is 'only a handful ever achieve the levels required to be a Librarian'. As far as power levels go, other chapter Librarians will still massively outperform Grey Knights.
@@Shade01982 And what do you think Librarians are prior to becoming Astartes? Psykers. Even the Emperor is classified as a Psyker and he's far more powerful than all of them combined. Every single candidate for Grey Knight goes through the most extreme training, more so than any Psyker or Librarian in any organization, then upon completing of those insane trials, they are mind wiped, given a name that is arcane and designed to be painful to any daemon that hears or dares attempt to speak it. Their mere presence causes pain to entities of the warp and will vaporize the weakest of them. They also carry the geneseed of the Emperor, which that alone would make them far more powerful than any Astartes chapter, even Primaris. This to me is like saying a regular astartes could outperform a custodes, which is laughable.
@Zanderfel It's not what they were and where they're going. First off, Grey Knight capabilities are massively overstated. Like your examples, you seem to think they are almost comparable to Sisters of Silence and/or Cystodes, which is just too much. As for big boy's geneseed, that's a nice rumor they'd like to perpetuate, but was never 100% confirmed lorewise. Don't forget that all primarch were also created from his geneseed, which in turn is used by all space marines. Big E was just very good genetics. Even their codices never really directly stated how much it was directly derived from him. They've purposefully left it vague, like they like to do with so many things. They are specialists, but they are still just space marines, just with very specialized training. They stand above normal space marines, since they do have access to more advanced equipment, but not *that* much. This is easy to confirm, just look at their tabletop stats. Grey Knights Librarians have a far different training, and not only that, have far different responsibilities. They are responsible for the GK's inner sanctum, which is not accessible for 'ordinary' Grey Knights.
@@Shade01982 No, I use to think they were as powerful as Custodes, but after many content creators said they're not as well as those from the Lexicanum, I stopped believing that. Sisters of Silence tho, they are a sisterhood of Nulls, and IIRC nullify any psyker's powers, sometimes causing the psyker to go insane. So can't really compare the GK to them either since their powers would just be cut off by the SoS. Only one they can't nullify is the Emperor, even being near him gives them heavy migraines so they naturally keep their distance from him. I do know that the Primarchs are essentially his clones, but clearly they are not direct clones (differing thoughts, opinions, beliefs, powers, and heck only Vulkan was confirmed to be a Perpetual while the others were not). And besides, if being a clone was really that big of a deal, then shouldn't the Custodes be just as powerful as the Primarchs rather than being stronger than the Primarchs? Custodes are definitely not clones, yet they are stronger than basically everyone. But yeah, in terms of power and whatever, how I rank them: Custodes, SoS, Primarchs, GKs, Primaris, and Astartes. Tabletop I never paid attention to tho, I only pay attention to the lore. Every edition of the table top changes the stats of all factions, what they can do, etc, whereas the lore doesn't pretend like "oh they never could do this even though there's a book stating otherwise". Besides, too broke for the tabletop stuff and not enough interest in it.
@@Gyrannon Primarchs are absolutely more powerful than Custodes and SoS. The Emperor made 10,000 custodes, while he could only make 20 Primarchs. He also was only able to make the Primarchs in conjunction with warp entities. Grey Knights are no more or less powerful than other space marine chapters overall. They are hyper specialized at killing Demons and fighting Chaos, which they do better than anyone else. However, they are worse than the Imperial Fists at siege and void warfare.
I was a fan when of the Soul Drinkers Librarian/Chapter Master Sarpedon “The Hell”, where he manifested what he felt were the great feats of his enemies into shadows that would attack.
My favourite unit! I love Librarians so much. I play Paladins in D&D and any chance I get to play an armoured wizard, I’ll do it. I only hope you mention the Primarch responsible for the creation of the Librarius.

If you want a good example of how OP librarians can be. Mephiston freezes time and causes aneurisms in a bunch of Eldar pilots all at once and talks about how he can literally bring a dead pilot back to life but decides against it and simply takes control of the ship and guides it to safety

The Imperial Fists did have a librarius before Nikea. I am fairly certain in one of the later Horus Heresy books it is seen that rather than return them to the ranks Dorn has the librarians sequestered on the Phalanx

@@weshammer It's in some Horus Heresy short stories where Imperial fist librarians are ,, imprisoned,, on phalanx and later in Siege of Terra they get unleashed by Dorn when Phalanx get assaulted by demons ( 1st Siege of terra book) Also Honorable mentions are World Eaters librarians, they tried to prevent Angrons ascension but sadly they got overpowered by Lorgar)

With beasts like the Lion and Guilliman and then next level Psykers like Mephiston, Tigurius, Alpha Primus, and such the Imperium has a counter to Deamon Primarch's and the forces of Chaos. They are amazing characters and the Blood Angels, White Scars and such have my favorite ones.

I know you just uploaded this deep dive but I have a (maybe dumb/stupid) question: Are there any plans on making Adeptus Mechanicus deep dive or is it already work in progress?
It's a work in progress. I plan on doing one for every faction. Normally I make a video based on what I'm inspired to make right in that moment. I feel like other lore videos don't incorporate nearly enough novels into their videos. So with mine I like to have at least a handful of novels under my belt when I go to make a video on a faction. So far the only mechanicus focused books I've read are, Mechanicum (Horus heresy) Brutal Kuning, and the great work. After I've read priests of Mars and maybe one or two more, I think I'll be able to tackle them and do them justice.

I have this idea that there can be salvation for each 40k clan, where they finally become powerful enough to end the endless wars. Something like those endings in mk10. For orks, they find out about their warp powers and manage to think unbelievable horror of machinations into this world and obliterate competition. For Oomans, i would think anything major that would cause the emperor himself, the man, THE human to rise from that chair and guide all humans to the inevitable victory. Im not that familiar with other races so yeah sorry.
TLDR: practicality/survival > obeying the edict When the Heresy broke out, pretty much every loyalist saw what they were facing and respectfully ignored the edict, seeing the anti-psychic argument as a ploy by the traitors to take away one of the few defenses the loyalists had against warp fuckery.

the last time i played was right at the tail end of 5th edition. blood angels were popular among the players at my flgs (they had a relatively new codex, that had a lot of creep in it), and i hated playing against them, as they all fielded mephiston.
Black Templars are too based for that. Who needs to sell its own soul to that foul skull addicted creature of the warp when you are literally so angry that you scare world eaters?

Fairly new to the Imperial in 40k but is there any consistency in the Space Marines concept of time? They’re said to be near immortal and will do DECADES of for a minor transgression penance but only take a single year to learn ALL of a chapters history? ( 28:06 , speaking specifically of the Space Wolves)

And when you think how strong a psyker the Old Ones were, then is it so ridiculous to think they mayhap became the Chaos Gods after Death or possibly some apostheosis.. That's my own weird head canon..
Like ever seen how much a Slaan, which are often depicted as the Old Ones, looks like say Nurgle? Khorne? As they are often depicted.. And The War in Heaven, first war... New species? Birth of life, disease and decay unlike never seen before the Old Ones..

You see the Emperor, you know him, glows gold, is always a head taller than anyone he's talking to, uses psyker power all the time, well he said that I'm not allowed to use those same powers. So unless you can go pull him out of Malcador and have him record that order then I'm afraid I'll have to stick with smacking those ethereal monstrosities with this here metal stick."
In the 42nd millennium, I think the council of nikea is kinda like the law in NYC that taxi drivers have to keep a shovel in their cab. Nobody actually enforces it, because enforcing it makes no sense.

@@DeathScepter The warp isn't just a negative. All positive things manifest to the warp the same as negative things, so the warp is kind of like the whole force in Star Wars, except the warp is also a dimension unlike the force.

I'd say there's a further difference between a sorcerer and a psyker. To be a psyker you basically must be born as a psyker, possessing some psychic potential to tap the warp for power.
While anyone at all can become a sorcerer, you just wouldn't necessarily be able to do all the things a sorcerer that is also a psyker would, or not as easily.
What you learn to do as a sorcerer is a combination of asking or compelling the various critters of the warp to do things that benefit you by doing various things in realspace, and also ways to control the energy of the warp in a limited fashion, again by doing various things in realspace, these are often completely nonsensical things such as speaking gibberish prayers while performing hand signs and brandishing implements stained with various foul substances, and so on, and the result is almost like cheat codes for reality.
There also exists ACTUAL console commands for reality in the 40k universe, and these are so powerful that even the few daemons that actually know some rarely teach any of these to mortals.
Not sure how accurate it is but years ago I heard that sorcery in its entirety is the source code of reality with varying levels of effectiveness that's why you can have a planet with few if any psychers and still have choas outbreak they teach some poor smuck of an average joe just enough to LET THEM IN. Also the stuff they teach to sorcers is fluffed up with useless bulk so mortals can't actually master Sorcerey it's made dangerous purposely so their door openers don't last long.

Well, Mephiston by example is such a strong librarian, he bodied a few Daemon Champions of the Chaos Gods and made Magnus look freaking stupid, so, a few of them are almost equals to their Primarchs.
Mephiston is an anomaly as he is able to still use a substantial amount of his power while in the presence of the Shadow in the Warp. And he’s said to be the host of the Angel of Darkness. So yeah he is incredibly powerful

In all seriousness, Magnus tried so damn hard and I think his soul got shattered for the effort so I'm not sure how that affects his Psychic potential.

I love the stormseers! By far my favorite librarians. Yesugei is one of the coolest characters of the entire heresy. I also like how jaghatai and the white scars didn't seem to give the shady eye to yesugei and the stormseers. Yesugei was pretty much jaghatais favorite and most beloved advisor and he had such a human side to his personality. He was funny and joked like all the time. Just a great character and an awesome librarian. Dude was a beast! His death brought a tear to my eye
I swear the 40k lore is an endless rabbit hole. The first time I read about librarians, I wanted to know more about psychers. Then I found the ranking system (alpha to omega). The I read that an alpha plus psycher can fold a titan in half like a piece of paper. Then I found out what a titan is...long story short I can completely understand why they get shot the moment they are found.

I saw a librarian once. He was carrying a staff of such immense size he could have riden it like a broom.
I told him to do a kick flip and then ran away. I made down it a whole hive level before I was hit in the back of the head by the librarian's serf, whom he had hurled on a hurricane wind, while shouting "Four!"
He seemed to be disturbed by this and started counting up "five... six..." when he reached seven he turned into an puddle of goo, and splashed on the boots of a passer by. This is all I saw before falling over the railing. I am falling still. I think I am about half way through the main down drainage pipe, somewhere in the mid-level of the under hive.

I have always loved the White Scars and Jaghatais nature. From the beginning the Stormseers held many similarities to the Space Wolf rune priests they didn't pull directly from the warp. Leman Russ despite fighting to ban all use of psychic in the legions did not adhere to the edict lay down by the Council of Nikaea since he still used Space Wolf psykers refusing to admit they were psykers.

At 7:25 all i could think of when Wes was talking for the explanation of psykers having to share the burden was the two psykers from the short film series Astartes with the twin psykers on that with the golden masks !

Dude I can never get enough of your videos, they are some of my favorite ways to absorb the lore since fixed income makes it hard to get the books or build my army(Ad-Mech). Surprising you didn't mention The Grey Knights who are essentially an entire chapter of Librarian Astartes.
Technically, no. They're all psykers, but not librarians. The difference is that all of them are trained to be exceptional at resisting the warp, but only the librarians are trained at using it. I'm not sure if there are any actual numbers, but there's no reason to assume they have a lot more librarians than most other chapters. The best I can find is 'only a handful ever achieve the levels required to be a Librarian'. As far as power levels go, other chapter Librarians will still massively outperform Grey Knights.
@@Shade01982 And what do you think Librarians are prior to becoming Astartes? Psykers. Even the Emperor is classified as a Psyker and he's far more powerful than all of them combined. Every single candidate for Grey Knight goes through the most extreme training, more so than any Psyker or Librarian in any organization, then upon completing of those insane trials, they are mind wiped, given a name that is arcane and designed to be painful to any daemon that hears or dares attempt to speak it. Their mere presence causes pain to entities of the warp and will vaporize the weakest of them.
They also carry the geneseed of the Emperor, which that alone would make them far more powerful than any Astartes chapter, even Primaris.
This to me is like saying a regular astartes could outperform a custodes, which is laughable.
@Zanderfel It's not what they were and where they're going. First off, Grey Knight capabilities are massively overstated. Like your examples, you seem to think they are almost comparable to Sisters of Silence and/or Cystodes, which is just too much. As for big boy's geneseed, that's a nice rumor they'd like to perpetuate, but was never 100% confirmed lorewise. Don't forget that all primarch were also created from his geneseed, which in turn is used by all space marines. Big E was just very good genetics. Even their codices never really directly stated how much it was directly derived from him. They've purposefully left it vague, like they like to do with so many things.
They are specialists, but they are still just space marines, just with very specialized training. They stand above normal space marines, since they do have access to more advanced equipment, but not *that* much. This is easy to confirm, just look at their tabletop stats.
Grey Knights Librarians have a far different training, and not only that, have far different responsibilities. They are responsible for the GK's inner sanctum, which is not accessible for 'ordinary' Grey Knights.

Sisters of Silence tho, they are a sisterhood of Nulls, and IIRC nullify any psyker's powers, sometimes causing the psyker to go insane. So can't really compare the GK to them either since their powers would just be cut off by the SoS.
Only one they can't nullify is the Emperor, even being near him gives them heavy migraines so they naturally keep their distance from him.
I do know that the Primarchs are essentially his clones, but clearly they are not direct clones (differing thoughts, opinions, beliefs, powers, and heck only Vulkan was confirmed to be a Perpetual while the others were not).
And besides, if being a clone was really that big of a deal, then shouldn't the Custodes be just as powerful as the Primarchs rather than being stronger than the Primarchs? Custodes are definitely not clones, yet they are stronger than basically everyone.
But yeah, in terms of power and whatever, how I rank them: Custodes, SoS, Primarchs, GKs, Primaris, and Astartes.
Tabletop I never paid attention to tho, I only pay attention to the lore. Every edition of the table top changes the stats of all factions, what they can do, etc, whereas the lore doesn't pretend like "oh they never could do this even though there's a book stating otherwise".
Besides, too broke for the tabletop stuff and not enough interest in it.
@@Gyrannon Primarchs are absolutely more powerful than Custodes and SoS. The Emperor made 10,000 custodes, while he could only make 20 Primarchs. He also was only able to make the Primarchs in conjunction with warp entities. Grey Knights are no more or less powerful than other space marine chapters overall. They are hyper specialized at killing Demons and fighting Chaos, which they do better than anyone else. However, they are worse than the Imperial Fists at siege and void warfare.

My favourite unit! I love Librarians so much. I play Paladins in D&D and any chance I get to play an armoured wizard, I’ll do it. I only hope you mention the Primarch responsible for the creation of the Librarius.

If you want a good example of how OP librarians can be. Mephiston freezes time and causes aneurisms in a bunch of Eldar pilots all at once and talks about how he can literally bring a dead pilot back to life but decides against it and simply takes control of the ship and guides it to safety

The Imperial Fists did have a librarius before Nikea. I am fairly certain in one of the later Horus Heresy books it is seen that rather than return them to the ranks Dorn has the librarians sequestered on the Phalanx

>The Imperial Fists outnumbered him (Garro), but he held them at bay with unparalleled focus and skill. Massic grimaced, advancing. He let his brothers move in a swift faint then he stuck, swinging the axe hard. Their blades met and locked, sparks flying. Massic glared at the trespasser searching his expression for some understanding of why he was here. “Who are you?” he hissed and for a moment he allowed his emotions to take the upper hand. A flicker of pscionic power sparked across his thoughts. Despite his iron self-control in the melee some tiny fraction of Massic’s preternatural power brushed across the mind of his opponent. With beasts like the Lion and Guilliman and then next level Psykers like Mephiston, Tigurius, Alpha Primus, and such the Imperium has a counter to Deamon Primarch's and the forces of Chaos. They are amazing characters and the Blood Angels, White Scars and such have my favorite ones.

I know you just uploaded this deep dive but I have a (maybe dumb/stupid) question: Are there any plans on making Adeptus Mechanicus deep dive or is it already work in progress?
It's a work in progress. I plan on doing one for every faction. Normally I make a video based on what I'm inspired to make right in that moment. I feel like other lore videos don't incorporate nearly enough novels into their videos. So with mine I like to have at least a handful of novels under my belt when I go to make a video on a faction. So far the only mechanicus focused books I've read are, Mechanicum (Horus heresy) Brutal Kuning, and the great work. After I've read priests of Mars and maybe one or two more, I think I'll be able to tackle them and do them justice.

I have this idea that there can be salvation for each 40k clan, where they finally become powerful enough to end the endless wars. Something like those endings in mk10.
For orks, they find out about their warp powers and manage to think unbelievable horror of machinations into this world and obliterate competition.
For Oomans, i would think anything major that would cause the emperor himself, the man, THE human to rise from that chair and guide all humans to the inevitable victory.
Im not that familiar with other races so yeah sorry.
TLDR: practicality/survival > obeying the edict
When the Heresy broke out, pretty much every loyalist saw what they were facing and respectfully ignored the edict, seeing the anti-psychic argument as a ploy by the traitors to take away one of the few defenses the loyalists had against warp fuckery.

Fairly new to the Imperial in 40k but is there any consistency in the Space Marines concept of time? They’re said to be near immortal and will do DECADES of for a minor transgression penance but only take a single year to learn ALL of a chapters history? ( 28:06 , speaking specifically of the Space Wolves)

So Varro Tigurius must be way more of a badass than Tacticus lets on. Because he's one of the few who's actually lived, trained, and fought, long enough to attain the rank of Chief Librarian.

The Old Ones were like strong psykers, so much so that they could create new species. So yeah, Warp has some serious power!
And when you think how strong a psyker the Old Ones were, then is it so ridiculous to think they mayhap became the Chaos Gods after Death or possibly some apostheosis.. That's my own weird head canon..
Like ever seen how much a Slaan, which are often depicted as the Old Ones, looks like say Nurgle? Khorne? As they are often depicted.. And The War in Heaven, first war... New species? Birth of life, disease and decay unlike never seen before the Old Ones..

It would have been funny if while they were being attacked by daemons and Guilliman tried to restart the Librarians a bunch of them said "Oh I'm terribly sorry but I can't use my powers to fight. You see the Emperor, you know him, glows gold, is always a head taller than anyone he's talking to, uses psyker power all the time, well he said that I'm not allowed to use those same powers. So unless you can go pull him out of Malcador and have him record that order then I'm afraid I'll have to stick with smacking those ethereal monstrosities with this here metal stick."

In the 42nd millennium, I think the council of nikea is kinda like the law in NYC that taxi drivers have to keep a shovel in their cab. Nobody actually enforces it, because enforcing it makes no sense.
My guess is the edict of nice was de jure made null and void after the siege of Terra. Some legions already ignored it (white scars, DA)

@@weshammer sweet! My High Chaplain in my Blood Angels successor draws from the old history of the chapter and takes the same name and consumes some of the predecessor’s blood, so their high chaplain “never dies”

Considering the existence of Eldar Exodites, I wonder if Rune Priests and Space Sharks Librarians are _actually_ drawing from something similar to the Exodites' World Spirit instead of directly from the warp.

I know mephiston is written pretty overpowered sometimes, but he is pretty damn cool.
